of Benidorm. Five days with acts
such as the staging of the finding

general public is Christmas
Eve (December 24).
The day is usually a fasting
day; in some places children
are told they’ll see a golden
pig if they hold fast until
after dinner. When the
evening comes preparation
of Christmas Dinner starts.
Traditions concerning dinner
vary from region to region,
for example, in Poland, Czech
Republic, and Slovakia, the
prevailing meal is fried carp
with potato salad and fish or
cabbage soup. However, in
some places the tradition is
porridge with mushrooms (a
modest dish), and elsewhere
the dinner is exceptionally
rich, with up to 12 dishes.
This in fact reveals that when
Christmas comes around all
the kids get presents from
neighbours and house guest.

UEFA Champions League
games are perhaps the most
important of all.
Football, as the cliche goes, is
a game of two halves. Yet in
the UEFA Champions League,
that is increasingly untrue. If
anything, European football
is a game of six 15-minute
intervals in which the last is
the most crucial.

first against Arsenal FC on
matchday three
Arsène Wenger once
purported the following:
“From a coaching perspective,
the key element of the UEFA
Champions League is the
last ten to 15 minutes.” On
matchday three, FC Schalke
04 proved him right – much
to his chagrin – by snatching
three points at the Arsenal
Stadium with goals from
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (76) and
Ibrahim Afellay (86).
That was not the only late
swing in the competition on
matchday three. In the last
15 minutes, FC Barcelona,
Olympiacos FC and FC
Porto all turned one point
into three with winning
goals, while Galatasaray AŞ
salvaged a draw at home

Just outside of Benidorm is the beautiful little
village of Polop which resembles a Tuscan hill
town. Here you can eat local cuisine in the
town square and then climb the towns steep
cobbled streets to the cemetery that has some
lovely views of the town below.
A little further into the mountains and you
have the wonderful waterfalls of Les Fonts
de L’Algar which in the height of the summer
are a cool and tranquil antidote to Benidorms
hustle and bustle.
Venture a little further can discover the tiny
and perfectly preserved village of Bolulla, with
it’s immaculate White housed and two bars.
From here it’s a short drive to the castle of
Guadalest, which has been carved into the side
of precipitous cliff and overlooks a beautiful
blue reservoir.
