There are two stories, three really, of someone coming back from death at the hand of another. Although I might not see myself bringing an unbreathing boy or dead man back among the living as Jesus or Elijah did, I can keep vigil with the dying and with those who mourn them. What great mercy work! The third story is more metaphorical. Paul, who first persecuted the young Church, then was knocked off his horse by the living Christ, spent three years in solitude listening and praying and taking guidance from God. Paul withdrew for a needed time and, refreshed by God, came back stronger to do God’s work. How will I carve out some time this week to listen to and be with God? Who is dying and needs my visit and my prayer? Who is grieving and needs my presence and my comfort? Psalm 30, the proper one for today, sings of God’s rescue. Use this link to listen to one setting by Rory Cooney: http://www.giamusic.com/search_details.cfm?title_id=3091 My name is Richard Grek. I’m an ordained member of the Congregation of the Resurrection, presently acting as the administrator of St. Pius X parish here in Lombard. Although I will be residing at the parish rectory, my permanent address is at the former Gordon Tech High School faculty residence (on the corner of California Ave. and Addison Street in Chicago). It is a privilege for me to spend a few weeks with you as the administrator of St. Pius while Fr. George is away. Please keep me in your prayers as I do my best to fulfill my ministry. A giant thanks to the staff and many parishioners who have welcomed me this first week. Pope quote of the week: "In the presence of a repentant people, God's justice is transformed into mercy and forgiveness. This challenges us by inviting us to make room for this same inner attitude. To become merciful, we must first acknowledge that we have done many things wrong: we are sinners! We need to know how to say: 'Lord, I am ashamed of what I have done in life'. If we act in this way, how many good things will follow. With this attitude of repentance we will be more capable of being merciful, because we feel God's mercy for us." —Pope Francis Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months of extraordinary celebrations. The Incarnation mystery: Jesus' advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal mystery: Jesus' passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost's Holy Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus' Body and Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays in Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this woman's material support, in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society's "peripheries." One of Pope Francis' hopes in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable people, and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our ordinary, daily, Christian way of life! --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Extraordinary Ministers Are You Interested in Becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion?
