34th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Christ the King
Christ the King marks the end and the beginning. He is the Alpha
and the Omega, the first and the last. This celebration marks the end of the
Church year and next week the beginning of a new year (Advent). This celebration reminds us that at the end of the world Christ the King will return to
begin something new and eternal. The fact that Christ will return is celebrated
today. The need to prepare for this return ought to be an everyday priority. Next Sunday, the first Sunday of Advent, we will begin a new Church year
and begin preparations for Christ to come. This is an excellent time to consider what type of changes are needed to best be
prepared for Christ‘s coming. Christ will return in glory and only with proper preparation will we be able to share in His glory. May Jesus be Lord and Savior of our lives and may He rule our actions and decisions. Let us proclaim with our lives, actions and choices, that Jesus Christ is King. Amen. Fr. Tom
Second Collection – Today there will be a 2nd collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. This money
responds to the needs of low-income people in our archdiocese and throughout the country by creating jobs, providing affordable housing, ensuring decent wages and organizing for change. Please help with this campaign.
Thanksgiving - Thursday, November 26, is Thanksgiving Day and we will have only one parish mass at 9:30 am. Please
bring bread and/or wine for your evening meal to have blessed during this Mass. Bringing these blessed items to your thanksgiving meal connects that meal with this thanksgiving meal (Eucharist) given to us by Jesus Christ. Please make plans to join
us and begin the day by giving thanks to God.
Pray for Vocations – Please remember to pray for more vocations to religious life and the priesthood during this holy
season. This can be our special gift to the Church. You may also go to the parish office and check out the ―Vocation Chalice‖ for a week as a reminder and tool to pray for vocations.
Cristo Rey

34th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Friday Holy Hour
By Deacon Jason Schalow
The tradition of making a ‗holy hour‘ before the Blessed Sacrament is an ancient practice. Of course, anyone
can make a private holy hour in our parish adoration chapel, but Sacred Heart Church also has a monthly public holy
hour on the first Friday of each month, as part of the first-Friday devotion in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
As Catholics, we have two kinds of public prayer: liturgy and devotions. Liturgies, such as the Mass and other
sacraments, are structured worship services governed by the Church‘s liturgical books. Public devotions, such as processions and rosary rallies, are freer in form—the organizers decide the specific prayers and devotions that will be used. A
parish holy hour is unique in that it contains both liturgy and devotions.
The two liturgical portions of the holy hour are called Solemn Exposition and Benediction and they form the
‗book-ends‘ of the hour. During the Solemn Exposition, Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is processed into the church by a
priest or deacon while a Eucharistic hymn such as ―O Salutaris‖ is sung. The Eucharist, in a special display called a
monstrance, is placed on the altar and solemnly incensed. At the end of the holy hour, the Benediction is given: the
priest or deacon, after singing another Eucharistic hymn such as ―Tantum Ergo‖ and praying the benediction prayer, incenses the Sacrament once more and then blesses the congregation with the exposed Eucharist. After a series of prayers
called ―The Divine Praises,‖ Jesus is then ‗reposed‘ (placed back into the adoration chapel).
Between these two liturgical ‗bookends‘, the congregation spends time with the Eucharistic Lord in prayer. These prayers are devotions and vary between parishes and presiders. At one extreme, I have attended holy hours where the
entire time was simply spent in silence! Most of our parish holy
hours, though, contain more organized devotions.
For example there may be scripture readings, a sermon
and prayers of the faithful—much like at Mass. There can also be
singing or music played; I personally like to sing the ―Adoro te
devote,‖ a simple but beautiful hymn written by St. Thomas
Aquinas, before the readings. There may also be other devotional
prayers; I prefer the Divine Mercy Chaplet, but other will say the
Rosary or lead some other common prayers. Because of the devotion to the Sacred Heart, the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is
also usually included. For those that are new to the idea of making a public holy hour, don‘t be intimidated! We provide worship
aides for the congregation to make it easy to follow along.
Each parish holy hour varies in content and theme. Some
are offered for particular intentions—for example I offered the
November holy hour for the healing of the wounds caused by sin
and division in our families, parish and community. In my sermon
I talked about how these divisions are caused by the spiritual battle we all face as Christians: a battle that, as St. Paul says, is ―not
against flesh and blood‖, but the ―world rulers of this present age
of darkness‖ (see Eph. 6:12). The remedy for those divisions is
Jesus himself, who gives us the power to face the full force of the
enemy (see Luke 10:19) if we first realize that our true enemy is
not something or someone outside, but inside our own hearts and
then accept that the victory has already been won for us by Jesus
on the Cross. We just have to claim that victory in our own lives!
So, if you haven‘t made it to one of the parish holy hours,
I would encourage you to join us: 8:30pm on the first Friday of
each month in the church. Come down and spend an hour with
Jesus!

In the Spotlight
Year of Mercy
On December 8, 2015, when Pope Francis opens the large bronze doors in Rome, he will be symbolizing that we open the church by performing more acts of mercy. Here are some ways to prepare ourselves for this Year of Mercy – a year when we are called to be sharers and bearers of God‘s mercy.
1.
Read -- Read Pope Francis‘s invitation to the Holy Year – titled ―Misericordiae Vultus‖ (―The
Face of Mercy‖) – for your Advent devotions or as part of your New Year‘s resolution. Just read a
paragraph or two a day and really digest it. Put in your phone so you can do this while waiting or on a
work break. http://www.thedivinemercy.org/mercysunday/ewtn/2015/story.php?NID=6275
2.
Offer Kindness -- Become a walking ―field hospital‖ (Pope Francis‘ vision of what the church
should be). If you see a homeless person begging, look him or her in the eye, smile and offer a blessing or a hello or a ―how are you?‖ Say thank you when you order or receive food and be sure to make
eye contact. There is a lot of rudeness in the world and much discourtesy – offer kindness. And how
about showing this kindness to those around you in church?
3.
Forgive -- Forgive someone you have been unable to forgive. Just one. Even if you know you
are not fully forgiving, and know that you have not emptied out all your hurt, live in the day that you
know is coming, the day of healing. Be merciful to yourself for not be able to extend mercy – but keep
trying.
4.
Don’t Blame or Complain -- Move out of the land of blame into the land of mercy, one step
and one exercise at a time. Don‘t complain about the world or your situation. Use language that are positive and hold possibility.
Some examples are: instead of ―running on fumes,‖ say ―full of joy,‖ or instead of ―not enough time,‖ say ―I‘m doing my best.‖
5.
Select Words Carefully -- We can hurt others because we aren‘t careful about the words we use, the jokes we tell or the assumptions we make. Be careful what you say and listen more. Two ears and one month – so listen twice as much as you speak.
6.
Pray -- Pray regularly to become more merciful, but also pray for someone beyond you or yours, like an elderly person dying
alone in a nursing home, a young person in prison or a homeless person you saw on the street.
