OCTOBER,
“RESPECT LIFE” MONTH
October 5th is Respect Life
and Life Chain Sunday.
Masses on that day will be dedicated to
committing our parish to upholding the dignity
of life, from conception to natural death.
We will also join all other U.S. and Miami
parishes in the Life Chain from 2:00 P.M. to
3:00 P.M. This silent demonstration along US1
will show our fervor in the most important civil
rights movement of our time. The block
assigned to St. Agnes is on US1, between Rosaro
and Maggiore streets.

The seventh Corporal Work of
Mercy teaches us to bury the
deceased with dignity. The
Church has consecrated our
Catholic Cemeteries to ensure
that we have the appropriate place to fulfill this
teaching. We have invited representatives from
Catholic Cemeteries Family Service program to
visit our parish next weekend October 4 and 5 of
2014. The counselors will have information
available to help you make your own decisions.

Gospel reading
A reading from the holy Gospel according to
Matthew 21: 28 – 32
Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: “What is your
opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and
work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards
changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the
same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did
his father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Amen, I
say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God
before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax
collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds
and believe him.”
Brief commentary
Today’s text compares the religious Jews of the time to the sinners and tax collectors who stole
from their own people. The parable is told at a critical moment in Israel’s religious history: The
chosen people, who had said “yes” to God initially, were now rejecting the Messiah. On the other
hand, those sinners who lived outside the Law of Moses and showed no respect for it were the ones
reforming their lives in response to Jesus and who were entering the kingdom of God. The son who
obeyed his father was like the “tax collectors and prostitutes,” who appeared around Jesus and in
his teachings. Matthew recalls that the conversion of the sinners had begun with John the Baptist
whom the religious authorities rejected and ultimately killed. The culpability of the religious Jews
consisted in their refusal of Jesus’ preaching and stood in contrast to the openness of those whom
they despised.
Today’s reading offers three significant
messages:
♦ There is a big difference between “saying”
and “doing.” The Christian should be willing
to “walk the talk.”
♦ Words are meaningless if they are not
accompanied by actions.
♦ Those who had been the first to hear the
Word of God failed to recognize it in Jesus.

San Mateo 21, 28 – 32
En aquel tiempo, dijo Jesús a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos del
pueblo: “¿Qué les parece esto? Un hombre que tiene dos hijos llama al
primero y le dice: ‘Anda a trabajar a mi viña’. Y él responde: ‘No quiero’.
Pero después se arrepiente y va. Después el padre llama al otro y le manda
lo mismo. Este responde: ‘Voy, Señor’, pero no va”. Jesús, pues, preguntó:
“¿Cuál de los dos hizo lo que quería el padre?” Ellos contestaron: “El
primero”. Y Jesús prosiguió: “En verdad, los publicanos y las prostitutas
entrarán antes que ustedes al Reino de los Cielos. Porque Juan vino a
indicarles el camino del bien y no lo creyeron mientras que los publicanos
y las prostitutas le creyeron; ustedes fueron testigos, pero ni con esto se arrepintieron y le
creyeron”.
Comentario breve
A medida que Jesús se acerca a Jerusalén para vivir su Pasión, continúa tratando de ayudar a sus
enemigos a recapacitar y a aceptar su mensaje. La lectura de hoy compara a los líderes religiosos
judíos con las prostitutas y los cobradores de impuestos. Esta parábola se escribió en un momento
crítico de la historia de Israel: el pueblo escogido, que había dicho Sí a Dios a través de su historia,
no reconoció al Mesías. Por otra parte, los pecadores, los que vivían fuera de la ley mosaica, eran
los que estaban reformando sus vidas en respuesta a la prédica de Jesús. El hijo que finalmente
obedeció a su padre era como los cobradores de impuestos y las prostitutas que aparecían
constantemente en el ministerio de Jesús. La parábola presenta un fuerte desafío a los judíos de
que los que eran considerados pecadores se les han adelantado en el reino. Mateo nos recuerda que
la conversión de los pecadores ya había comenzado con Juan el Bautista a quien las autoridades
religiosas también rechazaron y finalmente asesinaron.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas
importantes:

El primer hijo representa al pueblo de Israel,
mientras que el segundo simboliza a las
naciones paganas que acogieron el mensaje de
Jesús.
Las palabras, si no van acompañadas de las
acciones, no tienen valor alguno. Lo
importante no son los discursos y las frases
hermosas, sino hacer la voluntad de Dios.
Una vez más, Jesús resalta que no importa
quién fue el primero y quién vino después,
sino quién es fiel a Dios.
Para la reflexión comunitaria:
Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en
silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o
sentimientos.
1. ¿A qué hijo me parezco? ¿Al que dice sí y
después no hace nada, o al que dice no y después
se arrepiente?
2. ¿Resiento cuando un “pecador” es recibido en
mi comunidad y le dan una posición importante
de liderazgo? Explique.

“RESPETO A LA VIDA”
El 5 de octubre es el Domingo de
Respeto a la Vida y la Cadena de
al Vida.
Todas las misas de ese día serán dedicadas al
compromiso de nuestra parroquia a elevar la
dignidad de la vida desde la concepción hasta la
muerte.
Nos uniremos a la Cadena de la Vida con otras
parroquias de Miami y de los Estados Unidos,
desde las 2:00 P.M. hasta las 3:00 P.M., en una
demostración en silencio a lo largo de la US1 en
apoyo para defender el derecho de la vida. Los
bloques asignados a St. Agnes en la US1 son entre
las calles Rosaro y Maggiore.

Misericordia nos enseña que
nosotros estamos llamados a
darle, con dignidad, santa sepultura a los que han
fallecido. La Iglesia ha consagrado nuestros
cementerios católicos para asegurar que nosotros
tenemos el lugar apropiado para cumplir con esta
enseñanza.
