The evening began at the Mexican American Cultural Center with a casual cocktail reception of cold beer, smooth wine, and a variety of appetizers including pulled pork tacos, basil chicken skewers and seasonal fresh fruit. The crowd then took their seats in the auditorium to hear from Chamber President Andy Martinez, Board Chair Pilar Sanchez and Board Member Myndi Garrett, who is the Chair of the HAL Program. Myndi highlighted the founding years of the program and recognized the achievements HAL graduates. The evening proceeded into an exciting exhibition of five community projects that the HAL Class of 2010 implemented. The projects touched environment, education, financial stability, civic engagement and healthcare. The event attendees got to vote on which team won Team Project of the Year and healthcare triumphed! The main objective of the healthcare project was to provide informational sessions and a custom cook book, Platillos Latinos, to Hispanic families on how to improve their children’s nutritional intake but also maintain traditional meals. Thanks for all of the hard work HAL Class of 2010! I would like to extend a special thank you to our top sponsor, St. David’s Healthcare, and to the full slate of golfers that included former Austin Mayor Gus Garcia. Diabetes is a disease that has affected the lives of thousands in central Texas and is very prominent within the Hispanic community. One of our golfing participants, who suffers from Diabetes, truly drove home the point of how Diabetes can strike anyone! His life was literally saved by someone with whom he worked with; this coworker knew the symptoms and seriousness of the disease. The Health and Wellness Committee has embraced this very important cause to better inform employers how chronic diseases are affecting our Hispanic workforce and crippling our chances for full economic success. This event was only the first of many events and initiatives to come from the Health & Wellness Committee, so stay tuned! Don’t forget to register for our Power Networking Breakfast on May 6th. I recently looked at my appointment activity over the last six months because I was curious exactly how many companies I’d personally met with over that period. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was 110 companies that were looking for various forms of capital. As I looked back and reflected, I was looking for “the one thing” that can help a company make a decision about which financing vehicle is right for the business. Again and again, I always came back to the future cash flow projection. Nine times out ten, I ask a business owner if they have gone through this exercise and they say yes. They then hand me a future profit and loss statement. This is not a cash flow statement. The cash flow statement answers the most salient of questions: What is the need? When does it occur? What can be satisfied via traditional financing? What need will be left? This is an often neglected piece of information which generally requires the help of your CPA or advisor. Don’t neglect it, get to know it. Your cash flow statement can answer big questions. Traducción de Carolina Modesto While social networking started off as more of a tool for entertainment rather than a tool for business, it has quickly grown to one of the easiest and most efficient ways to reach large groups of people. It seems as though everyone, and everything, you know has a Facebook, Twitter or MySpace account.
