Not just Another Week: It’s Holy Week
Holy Week refers to the week that begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday, the day
before Easter. For Catholics, it is the most sacred week of the year.
“From the very beginning of Christianity it has always been devoted to a special commemoration of
Christ's Passion and death through the practice of meditation, prayer, fasting, and penance. After the
great persecutions, the Christian emperors of both the East and West Roman Empires issued various
decrees forbidding not only amusements and games, but also regular work in trade, business, professsions, and courts. The sacred days were to be spent free from worldly occupations, entirely devoted to
religious exercises” (CatholicCulture.org).
Please arrange your week so that you can enter as fully as possible into the most sacred days of our faith: Holy
Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil/Easter Sunday. So holy are these days that they form a liturgical season
unto themselves called the Holy Triduum. I encourage each of you to attend and participate in these powerful and
beautiful liturgies.
In order for this week to be different than every other week of the year, we need to do things differently than normal. The rhythm and activities of this Holy Week should reflect the mysteries we are celebrating. The passion,
death, and resurrection of our Lord. Prayer, fasting, almsgiving, silence, the Stations of the Cross, reading Scripture
and attending the Triduum services are some elements that we will want to incorporate into our lives in a special
way this week.
On Easter Sunday, the number of people who will attend Mass here will triple. Most of these people are CEOs
(Christmas & Easter Only people). Please give them a reason to come back to church, not a reason to stay away. St.
Edward the Confessor Church is not our church, it is our Father’s house and all are to be welcomed – the “regulars”
as well as the visitors. Perhaps through our warm hospitality, being patient and kind to one another in the parking lot
as well as in the church, and by our praying the Mass with faith and joy, they will discover the resurrected Lord here
in this place and in their lives.
May this week not be just another week, but a Holy Week.

Women's Silent Retreat
at Mater Dolorosa
April 8 - 10
The Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of Orange
provides a pre-need Planning Program for Catholic
Families in Orange County. Family burial arrangements
are among the most important and inevitable decisions a
Catholic must make. Because of the many emotional and
financial savings that result by planning these arrangements in advance of need, the Diocese of Orange urges
all Catholic families to learn about their burial options.
The apostolic and administrative work of Catholic
Cemeteries truly reflects the corporal and spiritual
works of mercy.
For information on advance planning and the choices you
have, please contact Mary Ellen Lohnes:

LAMENTATIONS
A REFLECTIVE
PRAYER SERVICE
GOOD FRIDAY March 25th
at 7:00 pm in the Church
What is lamentation? It is a human response
to pain, a crying out to God in faith until
help arrives. Lamentation is found
throughout Scripture and is focused on
human suffering and injustice as a
continuation of Christ’s suffering.
We come together to lament with anyone
who is suffering from pain or loss,
anyone who stands with others who are
suffering, anyone who feels the pain and
suffering of the world.
Our purest response is hope, love and
compassion which in turn empower us to
be agents of change for Christ in the
transformation of the world. This will be a
truly memorable evening, full of music,
readings, images and places to weep over
the injustices and absurdities of life.
Please join us.

Turn Your TAXABLE RMD (Required
Minimum Distributions) into Charitable
Donations.
IRS rules mandate that individuals age 70
1/2 and older take RMDs from their IRA each year, regardless
of whether the
is needed. These annual withdrawals are
subject to ordinary income taxes. By making a charitable contri
-bution from your IRA, you can satisfy your RMD amount
without reporting additional income.
This provision may be especially attractive for retirees who
don’t need all the income from their IRA to meet current living
expenses. By donating the money to your charity, you can enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to a
worthy cause while effectively lowering your tax bill.
