The retreat will be a "mostly silent" retreat, with some periods in which retreatants will be encouraged to talk about what they are learning. We will have daily Mass, opportunities for the Sacrament of Confession, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Rosary, silent time forprayer and reflection, and several conferences on our spiritual life. St. Joseph Church………………….….……………….21st Sunday Ordinary…………………..…………………August 22, 2010 Pastor’s Column La Columna del Padre Praised be Jesus Christ! WOW! It has been 12 days since Father Josh McCarty and I arrived in Bowling Green to Saint Joseph Parish. It has been a whirlwind of activity and meeting lots of new people. Our minds have been swirling with information! We appreciate your ongoing understanding and patience with us as we continue to get settled in. Allow us to make personal introductions of ourselves in this bulletin and the next. I’ll go first and Father Josh will have this space next week. I was born in Ashland, Kentucky on February 17, 1961. My mother, Ellinore, who is 69, and my father, Bob, who is 68, still live in Ashland where they are active members of Holy Father Parish. My little sister, Joy, and her husband, Shane, live in Dayton, Ohio. Their first child, Logan, will soon turn a year old. They are an Air Force Family and assigned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Following my graduation from Boyd County High School in Ashland, I traveled over to Lexington to study at the University of Kentucky where I obtained my degree in Marketing. After graduating from UK, I worked for the Hyatt Corporation for two years and then returned to the University of Kentucky where I served as Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions and then as the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs in the College of Dentistry. My work in the Undergraduate Admissions Office put me in western Kentucky. I had responsibilities in all the counties west of the Eastern/Central time line … which is all the Diocese of Owensboro. During my tenure at UK I also served as a part-time staff member of the Newman Center. During my time in the corporate world and academia I wrestled with the Lord and a call to the priesthood. Finally a good spiritual director told me, “I think it’s time for you to run to the priesthood rather than running from it!” From 1995 to 2001 I was a seminarian for the Diocese of Owensboro at Saint Meinrad Seminary in southern Indiana. During my seminary formation I also spent time studying in Rome, Mexico, and Jerusalem. From Saint Meinrad Seminary I earned a Master of Catholic Thought degree and a Master of Divinity degree. I was ordained a priest on May 26, 2001 at Saint Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. My first assignment, from 2001 to 2003, was as parochial vicar at Holy Name Parish in Henderson. Those were two happy years and I continue to treasure many of the friendships that extend back to that time. I enjoyed celebrating daily Mass, hearing Confessions several times a week, visiting the elderly and homebound, and spending time with 650+ children at the parish school. From 2003 to 2005, I served as Chaplain and Head of the Religion Department at Owensboro Catholic High School. That was a privileged time to have such an integral role in the formation of young people. There are many times when I miss the classroom. In 2005, Bishop McRaith appointed me as the full-time Director of Vocations and Seminarians for the Diocese. What a blessing to work with young men who are discerning God’s call to the priesthood. Hopefully, you met several of those young men last Sunday. These men challenge me regularly to be faithful, and they help me grow as a spiritual father. From here at Saint Joseph Parish I will continue to work with vocations and seminarians. Now, here at Saint Joseph Parish I have the blessing of serving you. I certainly appreciate and ask for the kindness of your prayers in this graced position. Saint Joseph, pray for us! Alabado sea Jesus Cristo!
