TERRIS
We must add,
therefore, that it is in
the nature of the
common good that
every single citizen has
the right to share in
it—although in different ways,
depending on his tasks, merits and
circumstances. Hence every civil
authority must strive to promote the
common good in the interest of all,
without favoring any individual citizen
or category of citizen. As Pope Leo XIII
insisted: "The civil power must not be
subservient to the advantage of any one
individual, or of some few persons;
inasmuch as it was established for the
common good of all."
Nevertheless, considerations of justice
and equity can at times demand that
those in power pay more attention to
the weaker members of society, since
these are at a disadvantage when it
comes to defending their own rights
and asserting their legitimate interests.

Añádase a esto que todos los miembros de
la comunidad deben participar en el bien
común por razón de su propia naturaleza,
aunque en grados diversos, según las
categorías, méritos y condiciones de cada
ciudadano. Por este motivo, los
gobernantes han de orientar sus esfuerzos a
que el bien común redunde en provecho de
todos, sin preferencia alguna por persona o
grupo social determinado, como lo
establece ya nuestro predecesor, de
inmortal memoria, León XIII: No se puede
permitir en modo alguno que la autoridad
civil sirva el interés de uno o de pocos,
porque está constituida para el bien común
de todos. Sin embargo, razones de justicia y
de equidad pueden exigir, a veces, que los
hombres de gobierno tengan especial
cuidado de los ciudadanos más débiles, que
puedan hallarse en condiciones de
inferioridad, para defender sus propios
derechos y asegurar sus legítimos intereses.

PRESENCIA
Es difícil estar realmente presente ante
otros. Hablamos de aparecernos o dar
signo de presencia. Aun cuando estamos
allí, estamos distraídos. pensamos en lo que
viene, o revisitamos un pasado no resuelto.
Sin embargo, somos lo mejor que podemos
ser cuando estamos realmente presentes.
Somos nuestro más completo ser cuando
estamos absorbidos en algo digno de
nosotros: trabajo creativo, buena
conversación, oración. En estas ocasiones
somos totalmente nosotros mismos y
totalmente fuera de nosotros.
Elías conocía ese tipo de participación. Él
era uno de los grandes profetas de Dios.
En la primera lectura, él sigue el
mandamiento de Dios de ir a un sitio
sagrado, el Monte Horeb. Y allí en gran
silencio, el humilde Elías encontró a Dios.
Y Pedro y los Apóstoles descubrieron la
presencia de Dios después de la tormenta
en el mar. Ellos, el mar y el viento se
quedaron mudos en silencio reverente.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Hoy celebramos la memoria del santo
patrono de los cocineros, san Lorenzo.
Este español del siglo tercero fue uno de
siete diáconos del Papa Sixto II, en Roma.
Su ministerio consistía en repartir limosnas
a los pobres.
En el año 257 se pronunció una nueva
persecución a los cristianos en Roma y el
día 6 de agosto unos soldados romanos
asesinaron al Papa y a cuatro de sus
diáconos. Lorenzo, cuyo nombre significa
laureado o premiado, fue arrestado tras la
batalla y llevado ante el alcalde de Roma.
Este mandó traer todas las riquezas de la
Iglesia, pero Lorenzo ya hacía tiempo que
las había vendido para dar el dinero a los
más necesitados. No obstante, se marchó
de la presencia del alcalde para luego llegar
con él, acompañado de gente pobre y
enferma, insistiendo que ellos eran las
verdaderas riquezas de la Iglesia. El alcalde,
furioso, lo mandó quemar sobre brazas
para que muriera lentamente.
Según testigos de su martirio, Lorenzo, a
cierto punto dijo a sus asesinos: "Ya estoy
asado de este lado, voltéenme para asarme
por completo". Eventualmente dijo: "La
carne esta lista, ya pueden comer" y falleció
orando por la conversión de Roma.
