Mother Bunch Brews In Garfield

Have you noticed a new business in our neighborhood? A neighborhood microbrewery
and restaurant at 825 N 7th and Garfield Streets! The conception of this fun food and
beverage place is due to the principle owner, Julie Meeker. Her vision has come to fruition at the historic former AJ Bayless grocery store.
Inside, you will find the horseshoe shaped bar as the focal point, with tables on the outlying seating areas. This is a perfect example of an adaptive reuse of a historic building
for a locally owned business. This local business supports the needs of the residents in
its neighborhood. It is relaxed and sophisticated, not complicated or pretentious. The
stained and polished concrete floors, exposed trusses and brick walls provide a relaxed
environment with an urban edge. With two flat screen TV’s at the bar and music piped
throughout, it is a great place to watch a game or chill over a brew. On tap you will find
four local microbrews along with a wide assortment of other beers. Of course, the bar
comes fully stocked with a good wine selection and mixed drinks. Other amenities you’ll find at the bar are USB and electrical plugins for those of us needing to charge our phones and/or laptops while taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi for our “working” lunch or
dinner. In addition to the amazing beverage selection, you will find incredible food selections! Julie brought on to the Mother Bunch
Brew team, Chef Holly Arguello! Julie did this early on, so Chef Holly was able to create a kitchen to meet the standards to accommodate the patron’s and even some catering. You will find creative food combinations, as well as the classic staples with an updated
twist. My personal favorite is the “Mini Beer Mac Trio” off of the “Traffic Hour” menu (aka happy hour menu). This is one of several
favorites I have grown to appreciate from Chef Holly’s kitchen.
Mother Bunch Brewing is quickly becoming a local favorite hangout for those who favor
it’s Brews and incredible food. I recommend walking over and trying it out. Check out
their hours, brews and food on their website www.motherbunchbrew.com or look for
their FaceBook page. Oh yeah, if you are curious as to why Julie chose the name Mother
Bunch Brew….I guess you will have to stop in and ask her yourself.

¿Ha notado un nuevo negocio en nuestro barrio? ¡Una micro cervecería y restaurante en el barrio ubicado en 825 N 7th y las calles de Garfield! La concepción de este
divertido lugar de alimentos y bebidas se debe a la dueña principal, Julie Meeker. Su visión ha llegado a buen término ocupando el
ex-supermercado histórico AJ Bayless.
En su interior como punto focal, hay un bar en forma de herradura, con mesas en áreas alejadas. Este es un ejemplo perfecto de la

Grant Applications Available for Your Historic

The City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office is now accepting new applications for its Exterior Rehabilitation Grant
Program. The program provides funding for repair and restoration work on historic homes. Owners of properties located
in city-designated historic districts or individually listed on the
city’s historic property register are eligible to apply.

The program reimburses owners on a 50-50 matching basis for
pre-approved work with grant funding between $5,000 and
$10,000 per project. In exchange for receiving financial assistance, the property owner agrees to sell the city a conservation
easement to protect the historic character of the property's
exteriors.

Applications will be accepted up until 4:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, April 8, 2015. Application materials are

Story From Sky Harbor Coalition Newsletter
We are excited to report that the Spring cleanup was a
success thanks to all who were able to attend. A total
of 29.12 tons of debris and 66 tires were removed from
the neighborhood. Students from Garfield Elementary
and SSH Volunteers planted new flowers and trees at
the Garfield Community Garden.
Congressman Ruben Gallego stopped by the community garden
and visited several of the cleanup sites.
A special thanks to our team leaders for and partners: the City of
Phoenix Neighborhood Services, Garfield Organization, Garfield
Elementary School, Arizona Community Tree Council, New Pathways
for Youth, Watershed Management Group, and APS!
Again, we cannot thank you enough for your continued support! If
you weren’t able to make the Spring Cleanup be sure to join us in

Garfield Community Garden (GCG) Update

The spring/summer season for the GCG started on March 1.
We have 8 new participants for total of 18 gardeners with plots
in the garden. Gardeners use their plots to grow their own food
and flowers. We also have a community plot and share/trade
food with each other. We will be giving tours of the garden
between 8 am and 11 am on Saturday, March 7. We meet in the
garden on Sunday mornings at 9 am and have a monthly garden
meeting on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 7 pm at the Safe
Haven house, 1029 E. Garfield St. Everyone is invited to come
by the garden to learn about gardening in general and see what
we are growing. Stop by or email [email protected]
to join the email list or the waiting list for a plot next season.
The next season will start in September 2015.
Things to plant in your garden in March include transplants of
artichokes, basil, eggplant, peppers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes
and tomatillos. Seeds that are good to plant in March include
basil, beans of all sorts, carrots, corn, cucumbers, melons, green
onions, pumpkin, radish, squash and sunflowers. The second
half of March is a good time to plant okra and peanuts from
seed. Happy gardening!
The Garfield Community Garden is located in the lot west of
1022 E Garfield Street. The garden is sponsored by the Garfield
Organization and Maricopa County Adult Probation. We are
thankful for recent donations of compost from Gro-Well and
wood chips from Tree Amigos. Our next projects will be to build
a trellis and new fence around the garden. Please contact us
at the email above if you are interested in a tour or to make a
donation – we are part of the Garfield Organization 501(c)(3)
non-profit. We are particularly interested in materials for building a fence, tables and benches, and a shade structure.

Infants juried art show and
sale of students naive art
at Alwun House. Presented by Phoenix Elementary School District #1
Art Teachers, who select
the “best of” student
artwork for this annual
juried exhibit, hang “salon
style” from floor to ceiling,
and all sold right off the
wall including sculpture,
ceramics, painting and
photography.
There will be approximately 300 pieces made by
students in the 5th through 8th grades, representing 16 Schools,
and 18 teachers. All art sold for $20 right off the wall, on a
first come basis, replaced with yet another - 100% goes to the
student artist. Aside from a heartwarming community activity,
“naive art”, is also collectable.

The purpose of our iniative is to plant trees and promote the
utilization of our parkways throughout Garfield to create a
walkable, cooler community. This initiative is community driven and encourages a more personal neighborhood.
El propósito de nuestra iniciativa es plantar árboles y promover la
utilización de nuestras rutas verdes a lo largo de Garfield para crear
una comunidad peatonal, más fresca. Esta iniciativa es impulsada por
la comunidad y fomenta un barrio más personal.
What are Parkways?
Parkways are the strips of soil between the sidewalks and the
street and they come in many shapes and sizes in Garfield.
Parkways are city-owned, but they are maintained and utilized
by residents.
Why Plant the parkways?
Walking around Garfield it is easy to notice the obvious lack of
shade over most of our sidewalks. Trees are known as solution
multipliers. They
1. Clean the air
2. Cool summer air and help retain heat in the winter
3. They provide shade that is desperately needed during the
hottest months of the year.
4. Trees and plants reduce storm water runoff.
5. Trees improve social connections,
strengthening a neighborhood.
6. Tree cover increases property value
and shows the health of the neighborhood.
7. They create walkable communities that will bridge the gap
between Garfield and RoRo/
Downtown.
How will this help everyone?
During the hottest months of the
year the temperature of the sidewalks and asphalt can easily reach
140’ in spots that aren’t shaded,
while shaded concrete is nearly
40’ cooler. This heat is released back
into the air during the night, which is
intensified at night. Air temperature in the
desert and farmland that surrounds phoenix
is 15’ cooler than downtown. Air temperatures
are 10-15’ cooler under shade. AirConditioners release hot
air from homes back into the atmosphere and many residents don’t have anything morethan an evaporative cooler.
Most homes in Garfield are historic, and come with their own
challenges, from poor insulation to leaky windows. Cooling the
neighborhood helps all of us.
What Kind of trees and plants?
We are encouraging the planting of native trees. This insures
that these trees can survive our intense summers. There are
a few species of trees that are quick growing, and able to survive the intense Phoenix climate. Mesquites, Palo Verdes, Ironwoods and Acacias. These trees have roots that will help them
stay stable in our monsoons, and leaves that retain water
with minimal watering. There are many, many other species
of trees and bushes that will survive here. Walking through
Garfield you will see parkways that are farmed with crops and
as orchards, making them useful beyond shade and greenery.
There are parkways with native and foreign cactus. Some are
only trees, but most are dirt- and that needs to change.

Can I get free trees?

APS offers 3 free trees to anyone in Garfield through its Shade
Tree program. You will need to take a quick online class, and
answer a 10 question assessment. Trees can be picked up twice
a month at various locations in Phoenix. They are small enough
to fit in most cars and SUVs. They offer 6 types of native trees,
thorned and thornless.
