Wrestling club starts in Hutto

and that’s where we step in.”
“It’s imperative that these
kids get an opportunity to
learn from the best,” Smith
said. “Those kids who get to
go to these camps will come
back 10 times better than
they were before. If we want
to compete on the same level
as the state’s best, we have
to give our kids a chance to
learn from the best.”
While the main objective
of the club is to build wrestling skills, football in Texas
in the unquestioned king
of the playground. Many of
Smith’s wrestlers who belong
to Van Meter’s program are
building skills that will translate to a football team with
state title aspirations in 2015.
“Wrestling has really taught me a lot about
leverage and being flexible
out there (on the football
field), junior Noah Ramos
explained. “It has made me a
better all-around athlete and
has really given me a more
aggressive mind-set.”
Ramos plays defensive end
and linebacker for Hutto’s
varsity football team.
For others, like freshman
Danny Guerro, wrestling is
their only sport. It’s an outlet
that has provided a place for
someone interested in something different than the bright
lights of Friday night.
“I wanted to get into
a sport, but I didn’t really
like football,” Guerro said.
“Wrestling helped me get into
shape and has taught me how
to eat better. I’ve dropped 20
pounds since I started and I
walk around the halls more
confident with myself. I’m not
self-conscious anymore.”

Bradley LaPlante has been in
full support of Smith’s mission from the start, helping
to spread the word about the
new club, and wrestling in
general, to students and the
community.
“When you take on a project of this magnitude, you not
only have to have ambition,
you have to have drive. Matt
has both of those,” LaPlante
explained. “He’s in this thing
for the long haul.”
After three weeks of
practice, the club is averag-
ing around 15 to 20 kids per
training session. They meet
Tuesday’s at 4:30 p.m. and
Friday’s at 4 p.m. Smith plans
to branch out the club into
the middle school ranks once
they’ve established themselves at the high school.

provides support for area youth

In other news,
we’ve just finished up a
canned food drive event
on March 25, which
pitted Hutto High School
against Pflugerville Connally High School. Each
school’s Student Athletic
Leadership Committee
was the driving force
behind the event. It was
a friendly competition
that culminated with a
pizza party, egg races
and the making of many
new friends. Cans were
divided equally between
the two schools and then
donated to the Hutto
Food Bank and First Baptist Church of Pflugerville Food Bank.
At this moment, in
our brief history, we
have built a very stable
foundation on which
our organization can
grow. We have the best
volunteers in the world,
made countless friends,
built relationships with
other nonprofit organizations that have similar
goals, built relationships
with community leaders
and groups, and have
reached teens from
almost every high school
in the area.
With such great support, and a solid start,
we feel confident we will
not only survive in the
community, but thrive.
And remember that
our doors are open, not
only to Hutto students,
but all to students from
the surrounding area.
