World Marriage Day Sunday, February 8th
Today is World Marriage Day which honors husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It
salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily, married life. Today’s bulletin highlights some
resource that exist for couples preparing for marriage, those who are already married, and those seeking help in
their marriages.
In April, the Holy Father spoke beautifully about the Sacrament of Marriage saying,
"We were created to love, as a reflection of God and his love. And in matrimonial union the man and
woman realize this vocation, as a sign of reciprocity and the full and definitive communion of life". When a
man and a woman receive the Sacrament of marriage, "God is, so to say, 'mirrored' in them, he imprints in
them the features and indelible nature of His love. Marriage is the icon of God's love for us” (Vatican City.
April 2, 2014).
As Catholics we celebrate, and give thanks to God for, the gift and vocation of marriage.
-Fr. Brendan
Prayer for Our Marriage
Heavenly Father, we thank You for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Enable us to grow in
our intimacy with You and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and
more one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our communication with each other, and help us become living
signs of your love. Help us to be examples of commitment, love and service to our families and children. Make
us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of your
Holy Spirit, who empowers us to love in Jesus’ name
and walk in His footsteps. Amen.

Dispelling Myths About Divorce
How does the Church view divorce?
The Church believes that God, the author of marriage, established it as a permanent union. When two people marry, they form an unbreakable bond. Jesus himself taught that marriage is permanent (Matthew 19:36), and St. Paul reinforced this teaching (see 1 Cor 7:10-11 and Eph 5:31-32). The Church does not recognize a civil divorce because the State cannot dissolve what is indissoluble. See Catechism of the Catholic
Church, #2382-2386.
Are divorced people excommunicated from the Catholic Church?
No. Divorced people are full members of the Church and are encouraged to participate in its activities.
May a divorced Catholic receive Holy Communion?
Yes. Divorced Catholics in good standing with the Church, who have not remarried or who have remarried
following an annulment, may receive the sacraments.
What support does the Church offer to divorced persons?
The Church understands the pain of those caught in this situation. When divorce is the only possible recourse, the Church offers her support to those involved and encourages them to remain close to the Lord
through frequent reception of the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist. (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, p. 287). Many dioceses offer programs and support groups for divorced and separated
persons. Catholic Divorce Ministry, The Beginning Experience, and Journey of Hope are helpful
resources.

Marriage Enrichment
Ministry
Marriage, a sacrament of the Church,
needs the sustaining grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Living a faith-based marriage in the modern world
can be a difficult challenge. To be open to receiving
God’s grace, married couples can benefit from a
proactive and ongoing investment in their relationship. Our marriage enrichment experience, called
“Living Catholic Marriage,” is an experience of liketo-like ministry: couples encouraging other couples
by their shared experience of living their marriage in
faith. Marriage Enrichment offers a time and space
for couples to focus on each other and gather with
other couples. Topics include communication in
marriage, living our Catholic faith, and meeting the
challenges from being married and raising a family in
the modern world. Each topic is intended to affirm
the ways we enrich our marriage and help us to improve where we can do better. Our evenings provide safe opportunities for couples to grow in their
love for each other and increase joy in their marriage. Husbands and wives of all ages and years married are welcome.
Marriage Enrichment meets monthly on the first
Thursday, 7:30 – 9:00 pm in the Parish Room of St.
Edward the Confessor School. To verify the next
meeting, see the church bulletin or simply contact
Joe & Rosemary Sinacori (949) 496-3478 [email protected] or Bob & Mary Dausch (949) 4811102 [email protected]
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Marriage Preparation Ministry
Remember the day you decided to get married? What a
joyful day! Suddenly you were engaged to be married
and your love for each other took on a whole new
meaning. When you realized that your whole life was
about to change, the Catholic Church was there to help
you get prepared. You probably met with your parish
priest and with married couples because of the importance of your marriage to your future happiness and to
the life of the Church.
The engaged couples of today need that same guidance.
The culture we live in has changed a lot in recent years,
and living Catholic values for marriage and family are becoming increasingly counter-cultural. Engaged couples of
today need to hear what the Catholic Church teaches
about sacramental marriage and family because what we
offer is the best way to have a life-long marriage of happiness and fulfillment.
That's where you come in. You can help engaged couples from our parish by participating in a workshop that
we offer for marriage preparation. To participate in this
ministry, you do not need to have a perfect marriage –
because no one does. You do need to be married in the
Catholic Church, actively living your Catholic faith as a
couple, and be willing to share your marriage for the
good of others. Three workshops are scheduled for
2015. If you are a married couple who would like to
help the engaged couples of today, please call Bob &
Mary Dausch at 481-1102.

Catholic Social Justice Ministry
"Human dignity is the same for all human beings: when I trample on the dignity of another, I am trampling on my own."
Pope Francis, February 2014
The first of the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Justice focuses on the “Life and Dignity of the Human Person.”
For more on this and the remaining six principles of justice stop by the church entry gathering space display case
for our poster. For your own copy of the seven themes and their descriptions contact Catholic Social Justice Ministry Chair Nellie Alcalde-Wayne, [email protected].
Mythbusting: Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Myth: Undocumented immigrants are burden on the U.S. healthcare system.
Fact: Federal, state and local governments spend approximately $1.1 billion annually on healthcare costs of undocumented immigrates, aged 18-64, compared to $88 billion spent on all health care for non-elderly adults in the
U.S. in 2000. Foreign-born individuals tend to use few healthcare services because they are relatively healthier
than their native-born counterparts.

to Undocumented Immigrants,” November 14, 2006
