Dealing with the selfishness of others can be both frustrating and draining. I can only imagine how heavy Jesus’ heart must have been dealing with his apostles at times. Three times in Mark’s gospel does Jesus tell the 12 that he must be rejected, suffer, and be put to death. The first time he says it Peter rebukes him only to be called “Satan”. The second time he announces his passion the disciples argue amongst themselves as to which one of them is the greatest. Today’s gospel from Mark chapter 10, picks up immediately after Jesus tells his disciples for a third time that he must suffer greatly, be rejected, be killed, and rise on the third day. So what’s the response of the Apostles? James and John approach him to ask for a favor, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” I mean, really? Three announcements of his sacrifice for us and we get three selfish responses. The scriptures tell us that Jesus came to pay the price for our sins. As we learned last week, none of us are capable or worthy by our own merits of entering the Kingdom of Heaven. If we were, we would not have needed a savior. No, we need Lord Jesus to make up for our great shortfall. Without him we could not be saved. He tells us that our response to his sacrifice should not be to ask for glory first, but to demonstrate service. Jesus summoned them and said to them. “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” If we would like to share in the Kingdom of Heaven, if we want to spend the rest of eternity in eternal happiness with Christ Our Savior and all his Holy Ones we must serve each other. Sometimes we might think the world revolves around us when in fact it does not. To think so makes us God in our own mind and makes our salvation tenuous at best. As disciples, rather, we must imitate the Master and offer our lives in service of those to whom we must minister. Whether it is the husband or wife, children, parents, coworkers, or schoolmates true discipleship means that we minister to them that they may know Christ and be saved. Let us then, in everything we do, give witness that Jesus is Lord.
