Pope Francis the Evangelist
Almost everywhere that I go, people ask me: “What do you think of Pope Francis?” My response is
always the same. I think that he is a gift to the Church from the Holy Spirit. In recent memory, we have
had two extraordinary popes in Blessed John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Now, we have another
extraordinary pope, Francis.
I have the habit of reading the short daily homilies and most of the addresses of Pope Francis. They are
published every day by the Vatican Information Service. They are gems of catechesis. They are
evangelical in the true sense. For the most part, they are commentaries on Scripture that the pope applies
directly to our lives today.
For example, at World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, the pope commented on the parable of the sower at
the Saturday night prayer vigil July 27. The parable reads: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed,
some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little
soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it
withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some
seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred- or sixty- or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to
hear” (Mt 13:3-9).
In his address to an estimated three million young people, the Holy Father said: “I think that we have to
ask ourselves honestly: What kind of ground are we? Maybe sometimes we are like the path: we hear the
Lord’s word but it changes nothing in our lives because we let ourselves be numbed by all the superficial
voices competing for our attention. Or we are like the rocky ground: we receive Jesus with enthusiasm,
but we falter and, faced with difficulties, we don’t have the courage to swim against the tide. Or we are
like the thorny ground: negativity, negative feelings choke the Lord’s word in us. Do I have two attitudes
in my heart: With one I am happy with God, and with the other I am happy with the devil? One which
receives the seed of Jesus and at the same time waters the weeds? What is born in my heart?”
The Holy Father is straightforward in his commentary. Notice that he is calling the young people and each
of us to look into our hearts and our consciences. The pope is calling us not to be superficial with regard
to our relationship with Jesus. He is calling us to have a deep, personal relationship with Our Lord. We
cannot have two attitudes in our hearts, one happy with God and the other happy with the devil.
Notice that Pope Francis does not hesitate to speak of the devil. He regularly mentions the devil in his
talks. By doing so, he reminds us that the devil is real and that he works for the demise of human beings.
Satan always works for our detriment and never for our good. As the Holy Father said in reference to St.
Michael the Archangel on July 5: “Michael fights to re-establish divine justice; he defends the People of
God from enemies and, above all, from the greatest enemy of all, the devil.”
Together with Pope Francis, I encourage all of us to ask ourselves honestly: What kind of ground are we?
What is born in my heart? Can we be happy with God, our friend, while at the same time being happy
with Satan, our enemy?
Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty
Please remember that in this Year of Faith, the Catholic bishops of the United States have called for a
nationwide effort to advance a movement for life, marriage, and religious liberty through prayer, penance,
and sacrifice. As Catholics, we are being encouraged to pray for the rebuilding of a culture favorable to
life and marriage and for increased protection of religious liberty.
The Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty has five components:
– Monthly Eucharistic Holy Hours in cathedrals and parishes
– Daily Rosary by families and individuals
– Special prayers of the faithful at all Masses
– Fasting and abstinence from meat on Fridays
– A Fortnight for Freedom (held June 21 – July 4, 2013)
The popular media have not been a good source of information about the threats against religious liberty
of Catholics and other religious denominations. I encourage the use of the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops Web site for a thorough presentation of the topic.
Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, D.C., said on July 4, 2013: “When we (Catholics)
talk about marriage, when we speak about the dignity of human life, when we teach about the natural
moral order, we are lifting up elements that we find deeply rooted in the consciousness of the JudeoChristian tradition. Just because someone wants to change all of that today does not mean that the rest
of us no longer have a place in this society.”
Cardinal Wuerl continued: “Today there are things that should mean enough to all of us, including our
religious liberty, that we simply need to stand – to stand up for what is right, to stand up for what is ours,
to stand up for freedom of religion. Let us thank God for the call, the freedom, and the courage to stand
up for religious liberty.”

Papa Francisco el Evangelista
Casi a todas partes que voy, la gente me pregunta: “¿Qué opino del Papa Francisco?” Mi respuesta
siempre es la misma. Creo que él es un regalo a la Iglesia del Espíritu Santo.
Tengo la costumbre de leer las homilías cortas de los discursos del Papa Francisco. Se publican a travéz
del Servicio de Información del Vaticano todos los días. Ellos son joyas de la catequesis y son
evangélicos en su verdadero sentido. En general son comentarios sobre las escrituras que el Papa se dirije
directamente en nuestra vida cotidiana.
Por ejemplo, en el día mundial de la Juventud en Rio de Janeiro, el Papa comentó sobre la parábola del
sembrador Sábado, 27 de Julio, vigilia de oración. La parábola dice: “Un sembrador salió a sembrar. Y al
sembrar, una parte de la semilla cayó en el camino, y llegaron las aves y se la comieron. Otra parte cayó
entre las piedras, donde no había mucha tierra; esa semilla brotó pronto, porque la tierra no era muy
hondo; pero el sol, al salir, la quemó, y como no tenía raíz, se secó. Otra parte de la semilla cayó entre
espinos, y los espinos crecieron y la ahogaron. Pero otra parte cayó en buena tierra, y dio buena cosecha;
algunas espigas dieron cien granos por semilla, otras sesenta granos, y otras treinta. Los que tienen oídos,
oigan” (Mt 13:3-9).
En su discurso ante 3 millones de jóvenes, el Santo padre dijo: “Creo que con honestidad podemos
hacernos la pregunta: ¿Qué clase de terreno somos, qué clase de terreno queremos ser? Quizás a veces
somos como el camino: escuchamos al Señor, pero no cambia nada en nuestra vida, porque nos dejamos
atontar por tantos reclamos superficiales que escuchamos. Yo les pregunto, pero no contesten ahora, cada
uno conteste en su corazón: ¿Yo soy un joven, una joven, atontado? O somos como el terreno pedregoso:
acogemos a Jesús con entusiasmo, pero somos inconstantes ante las dificultades, no tenemos el valor de ir
a contracorriente. O somos como el terreno espinoso: las cosas, las pasiones negativas sofocan en
nosotros las palabras del Señor. ¿Tengo en mi corazón la costumbre de jugar a dos puntas, y quedar bien
con Dios y quedar bien con el diablo? ¿Querer recibir la semilla de Jesús y a la vez regar las espinas y los
yuyos que nacen en mi corazón?”
El Santo Padre es directo en su comentario. Observe que él llama a los jóvenes y a cada uno de nosotros
para examinar en nuestro corazón y conciencia. El Papa nos dice para no ser superficiales con respecto a
nuestra relación con Jesús. El nos llama para tener una relación personal profunda con nuestro Señor. No
podemos tener dos actitudes en nuestro corazón, uno feliz con Dios y el otro feliz con el diablo.
Observe que el Papa Francisco no duda en hablar del diablo. El menciona al Diablo regularmente en sus
conversaciones regularmente. De este modo, nos recuerda que el diablo es real y que trabaja para nuestro
detriment y nunca para la desaparición del ser humano. El 5 de Julio el Santo Padre en referencia a San
Miguel: “Miguel lucha por restablecer la justicia divina; defiende al pueblo de Dios de sus enemigos y
sobre todo del enemigo por excelencia, el diablo.”
Junto con el Papa Francisco, los animo a que nos preguntemos honestamente: “¿Qué clase de cimento
somos? ¿y que nace en mi corazón? ¿Podemos ser felices con Dios, nuestro amigo, mientras somos
felices con satanás, nuestro enemigo?
La Vida, El Matrimonio, y La Libertad Religiosa
Recuerde por favor que en este Año de la Fe, los Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos han pedido un
esfuerzo nacional para avanzar un movimiento por la vida, el matrimonio y la libertad religiosa a través
de la oración, penitencia y sacrificio. Como católicos, se nos anima a orar por la reconstrucción de una
cultura favorable a la vida, el matrimonio y para el aumento de la protección de la libertad religiosa.
El llamado a orar por la Vida, el Matrimonio y la Libertad Religiosa tienen cinco componentes:
– Liturgia de las Horas mensualmente en catedrales y parroquias
– Rezar el Rosario a diario por familias e individuos
– Oraciones de los fieles especiales en todas las misas
– Ayuno y abstinencia de comer carne los viernes
– La quincena por la libertad (21 de Junio – 4 de Julio, 2013)
