Today the Church universal celebrates Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples, the conversion of the multitude, the birthday of the Church. On a local level, each year as Pentecost rolls around, I thank God that the Holy Spirit prompted me to invite Peggy Roket to be the principal of Saint John Berchmans School. True story. As Sister Joyce decided that her gifts were better suited for directing our early childhood program, and we were in need of a principal for our struggling school, the search began. Peggy certainly did not expect that on a Sunday morning in June – in fact, neither did I. Peggy laughed nervously and got away from me, and the church, and the school as quickly as possible that Pentecost morning. Two days later I called Peggy and told her that the Holy Spirit wasn’t kidding, and neither was I. I asked her to consider it, to pray over it, and to let me know of her interest by the end of the week, as the search committee was already hard at work. Somewhat nervously, Peggy threw her hat in to the “principal search” ring. 2013-2014 And the story goes…Since January of 2006 I have contended that great things are happening at Saint John Berchmans. I give all the credit to the Holy Spirit, who guides, directs, comforts and protects this community. The Holy Spirit sent Peggy Roket to lead our school. Under her leadership the enrollment of our school has doubled, the deficit has been reduced by hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the students’ academic performance has skyrocketed. A real sense of community prevails, and our school families are becoming more and more present at Sunday Mass and active in the life of the parish. So, on this Pentecost Sunday, I give thanks. I thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit. I give thanks for the Spirit’s guidance of our community, and our Church. I give thanks for the dozens (some day it will be hundreds) of people who share the gifts that the Spirit has given them for the common good of our Church. I thank God for the continued growth and improvement of our parish and parish school. And I thank God that Peggy Roket responded to the invitation of the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge, fills the halls and the classrooms of our school. Looking at the test scores and their incredible improvement over the past seven years, one can see that indeed great things are happening at Saint John Berchmans! Over the past 7 years our teachers have learned to use valuable data provided by the Terra Nova to drive their instruction and increase student achievement. The two charts below show tremendous academic growth since 2006-2007. Happy Birthday, Church! Our Mission: Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place. 2 June 8, 2014 Pentecost Sunday THE YEAR OF STRONG CATHOLIC PARENTS (JULY 2013 - JUNE 2014) Parish Announcements RAISING FAITH-FILLED KIDS ONE WORD AT A TIME... SERVE SUMMER ON THE SQUARE - SATURDAY, JUNE 21 Research shows that children whose parents volunteer to help others are far more likely to volunteer when they grow up. My mother has inspired her children and grandchildren in this way for decades. She coordinated so many events at the parish when I was growing up that we began to think that setting up tables and chairs was the Eleventh Commandment. Now in her 80s, Mom continues to volunteer—working with young people with special needs, washing and ironing the altar cloths, and working an afternoon each week at the thrift store that supports the local hospital. Here are two questions to add to your prayer before meals that will inspire your family to serve now and in the future: What am I grateful for today? Whom did I help today? —Tom McGrath Summer on the Square is just thirteen days away! Our evening begins with a special 4pm bilingual Mass on the front steps of the Church and the fun will continue with great foods and fabulous entertainment! The Summer on the Square committee is looking for both help and donations. Please take a moment to volunteer your time now! Stop by the raffle ticket sales table and sign the volunteer form or contact Jennifer in the rectory office. We are also looking for donations to help defray the costs of food and beverages. If you can help, please drop your donation in the rectory office or collection basket. You may also make your donation at the raffle ticket sales table via cash, check or credit card. Raffle tickets continue to be sold are before and after all Masses. This year’s prize is $7,500 and tickets will cost $50 each or 3 for $125, and ONLY 500 WILL BE SOLD! Credit cards are accepted. Stop by and purchase yours today. The teachers presented below were asked to answer two questions: (1) Please provide a brief description of your teaching style or your goal as a teacher and (2) Please provide a brief description of your best practice, most favorite lesson, most successful class — the moment when you shined your brightest! Mrs. Michelle Thompson 1. Teaching middle school students is both a challenge and a blessing. As a teacher for this age level, it is essential that I develop a positive relationship with each and every student. The middle school years are generally challenging years for students, and often times they need a positive role model in their lives. It is important that through my teaching style, I gain their trust and am someone who will not only be there to challenge them intellectually, but also be there to help with their emotional and spiritual needs. I try to make my classroom a place where students feel comfortable, welcome, and safe, and are also willing to come to me with anything that is on their mind. I strive to create a structured and organized classroom to emphasize the impact that hard work and dedication can have on their learning. My goal is to create a classroom environment that not only peaks my students desire to learn and but also encourages creativity. I hope that through a variety of interactive and engaging lessons that I can help my students to gain confidence and transform them into lifelong learners. 2. One of my best practices is incorporating the use of math learning centers into the classroom. Following a short period of direct instruction, students are divided into small groups and spend time at a variety of centers around the room. While at these centers, they have the opportunity to complete activities pertaining to the days lesson or review activities from past lessons. These activities hit a variety of students learning styles while also providing them with leveled tasks that are meeting their individual learning needs. Centers include activities on the Promethean Board and iPad, vocabulary review, problem solving, leveled practice, and small group work with me. Through the use of centers, students are able to collaborate together, practice problem solving techniques, and also provide me the opportunity to monitor their progress and meet their individual needs. Mrs. Rocio Valdivia 1. My goal as a teacher is to give the students the tools to engage in learning. I simply offer to them a mini booklet and a pencil and they are eager to write their own stories. When they get stuck on a word, I tell them to just sound it out. I love to see their faces when I ask them to read it to me and they can do it! 2. One of my great moments while teaching was when one of my students asked “How do you know so much about God?” I love to see my students attend Mass on Sundays. Another teaching practice is the kindness journal in which the students write acts of kindness they have done or have witnessed. It has been a great success. They become aware of being kind to others and they also recognize when someone has done act of kindness to them. Mrs. Mary Jean Zaino 1. My goal as a teacher is to help the students to do their very best each day. I would like them to feel good about coming to my classroom. 2. My favorite time of the year in Kindergarten is the 100th day of school! Each morning the children count how many days we have been in school and we talk about all of the activities we will do on the 100th day. This year we all dressed up as 100 year old people. (pearls, glasses, canes and shawls) We all had a ball acting as if we were 100 years old. Other activities we did were to count out 100 snacks and put it in a big bowl. The children also made hats with 100 dots on them! What a wonderful celebration we had!! 6 June 8, 2014 S J B Pentecost Sunday L E G AC Y C A M PA I G N Restore, Renew, Rejoice! Our legacy continues! It was one year ago that we commissioned our Parish Pastoral Council. With this, we opened up many opportunities to grow and share as a community. We invite you to share your hopes, dreams and ideas for this great parish, or to join a commission to help plan these exciting opportunities.
