This University,whose origins as a medieval Studium Generale
date back to 1293, was established as a modern University by
Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros in 1499. Ever since then it
became a model which was replicated in the creation of several
historical universities in Latin America. It was as well an

intellectual reference in the 16 and 17 centuries particularly,
because the greatest philological achievement of the
Renaissance, the Complutense Polyglot Bible, was produced at
the University between 1514 and 1517. Many of the greatest
authors and thinkers of the Spanish Golden Age studied or
taught at the University of Alcalá. Due to this invaluable
heritage, both architecturally and intellectually, the University
and the historic precinct of the town of Alcalá de Henares were
declaredWorld Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998.
