Seeing the great need for mercy and healing in the world, Pope Francis
called for the Year of Mercy. It is a time for the Church across the world to
take a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. As a parish
family we are going to take a pilgrimage from St. Agnes to La Ermita de la
Caridad to cross through the Holy Door, celebrate the Eucharist, attempt to receive the plenary

is on love’s transforming power rather than on fear and
punishment. It is a liberating and healing 15-week
workshop made possible through the knowledge of God
and oneself. You will learn to progressively enter into a
personal relationship with the Lord by practicing a
different prayer method each week. It will guide you
from the simple steps of Prayerful Reading through the
depths of Contemplative Prayer.
These workshops will be offered at the Pastoral Center,

First Sunday of Lent
The word is near you,

Gospel reading ( Luke 4: 1-13)
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty
days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.
The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered him,
“It is written, One does not live on bread alone.” Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world in a single instant. The devil said to him, “I shall give to you all this power and glory; for it has been
handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me.” Jesus said
to him in reply, “It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.” Then he led him to
Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down
from here, for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, and: With their hands they will support
you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Jesus said to him in reply,“ It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to
the test.” When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.
Brief commentary
In this first Sunday of the season of Lent, the readings highlight the spirit, character, and goal of this season. It is a season of
introspection, of deep soul-searching and self-evaluation, but also of daring repentance and new beginnings, of self-denial and
austerity for the sake of the kingdom, and of the transformation that is conversion. In the highly commercial culture we live in,
which continually tells us to indulge, this alone already makes Lent truly counter-cultural by reminding us of our truer and
deeper reality of our humanity. Today’s first reading from Deuteronomy recalls the saving acts of God on behalf of the people,
freeing them from oppression and leading them to the land of promise. The psalmist is fully confident in God’s power to help
and to save, and the passage from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians likewise expresses a bold faith in the Lord whose love for all
is so great that it was personally manifested in the flesh, in Jesus. Everyone without exception, Paul exclaims, can be saved
through faith in Jesus. In the gospel reading from Luke we find a Jesus whose wholehearted faith and loving devotion to God is
so complete, so radical, so resolute, that no temptation can swerve him from serving God alone and God’s saving plan for all
humanity. The readings attest that this period of Lent has salvation in Christ as its goal. Salvation is always salvation from and
salvation for: salvation from all that destroys us and our world, and it is salvation and freedom for faith, hope and love in
God…freeing usfor all that humanizes us and our world. In a world where wealth, power, fame, pleasure and narcissism seem
prized above all else, we find Jesus – our exemplar – who decisively turns his back on all of these. Neither will he succumb to
these himself nor will he use, in his mission, these conventional but futile ways in which people try to save themselves and their
world. At the beginning of his ministry, of his mission, Jesus decides that real revolution has far more to do with love and
compassion, mercy and kindness, justice and peace, than with weapons and terror, pleasures and tricks. In a consumerist
society, so steeped with material commercial values that emphasize image and shallowness, materialism and entertainment,
pleasure and selfishness as the means to happiness, the ‘Jesus of the desert’ reminds us of what Saint Teresa of Avila would one
day realize: “Whoever has everything, but lacks God, has nothing; and whoever lacks everything, but possesses God, has
everything.” As Christians we too can begin to unconsciously adopt the world’s godless ways of thinking and valuing, of living
and behaving; and so Lent calls us to the desert, to abandon our hope in the idols and to let ourselves be drawn again by God to
our true original covenantal love and be led by God’s love. Lent is a returning to our foundations of faith and love of God, of
renewal in that love, and of going forward beyond our self-imposed limits in order to accomplish the mission of Jesus in our
own world, society, communities, and families. Let us dedicate this Lent especially for our Christian brothers and sistersin the
Middle East and Africa, and in so many places, who daily face the arduous desert of brutal persecution and the merciless
demon of genocidal obliteration. May the Church unite this Lent and Easter to respond decisively to their needs and help them
with the mercy that Jesus Christ calls all to!
Today’s reading offers three significant messages:
♦ Lent calls us to the desert, toward an authentic
renewal of our faith, hope and love in God alone.
♦ The goal of Lent is to turn away from all that leads us
away from God and from our neighbor in need in
order to free us to respond more radically and more
resolutely to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
♦ Led by the Spirit into the desert of Lent we prepare
to participate in mystery of the Paschal week in union
with Christians around the world, particularly those
suffering the crucifixion of brutal persecution. and
conviction.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán y, durante cuarenta días, el Espíritu lo fue llevando
por el desierto, mientras era tentado por el diablo. Todo aquel tiempo estuvo sin comer, y al final sintió hambre.
Entonces el diablo le dijo: ―Si eres Hijo de Dios, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan.» Jesús le contestó: ―Está
escrito: "No sólo de pan vive el hombre".ǁ Después, llevándole a lo alto, el diablo le mostró en un instante todos los
reinos del mundo y le dijo: ―Te daré el poder y la gloria de todo eso, porque a mí me lo han dado, y yo lo doy a quien
quiero. Si tú te arrodillas delante de mí, todo será tuyo.ǁ Jesús le contestó: ―Está escrito: ―Al Señor, tu Dios, adorarás
y a él solo darás culto".ǁ Entonces lo llevó a Jerusalén y lo puso en el alero del templo y le dijo: —«Si eres Hijo de Dios,
tírate de aquí abajo, porque está escrito: "Encargará a los ángeles que cuiden de ti", y también: "Te sostendrán en sus manos, para que tu
pie no tropiece con las piedras".ǁ Jesús le contestó: ―Está mandado: "No tentarás al Señor, tu Dios".ǁ Completadas las tentaciones, el
demonio se marchó hasta otra ocasión.
Comentario breve
En este primer domingo del tiempo de Cuaresma, las lecturas enfocan el espíritu, carácter, y meta de esta estación litúrgica. Es
un tiempo de introspección, de búsqueda interior y de examen y evaluación, pero es también de arrepentimiento decidido y de
nuevos comienzos, de abnegación y austeridad para la causa del reino, y de la transformación que es la conversión. En la
cultura de alto consumismo en que vivimos, que continuamente nos llama a la gratificación sin limites, esto solo ya hace de la
Cuaresma algo verdaderamente contra-cultural en recordándonos de nuestra mas profunda y verdadera realidad de nuestra
humanidad. La primera lectura de hoy del Deuteronomio nos recuerda de los hechos salvíficos de Dios a favor el pueblo,
liberándolo de la opresión y conduciéndolo hacia la tierra de promesa. El salmista expresa completa confianza en el poder de
Dios de ayudar y de salvar, y el pasaje de la carta de Pablo a los corintos también expresa una fe audaz en el Señor cuyo amor
para todos es tan grande que es manifestado personalmente en la carne, en Jesús. Todos in excepción, exclama Pablo, pueden
ser salvos por fe en Jesús. En la lectura del evangelio de Lucas encontramos a un Jesús cuya fe profunda, devoción y amor a
Dios es tan completa, tan radical, tan resoluta, que ninguna tentación lo puede desviar en sirviendo a Dios solamente y al plan
salvífico de Dios para la humanidad. Las lecturas atestiguan que este periodo de Cuaresma tiene la salvación en Cristo como su
meta. La salvación siempre es salvación ‗de’ y salvación ‗para’: salvación de lo que nos destruye y destruye al mundo, y es
salvación y libertad para la fe, la esperanza y el amor en Dios…liberándonos para todo lo que nos humaniza y humaniza a
nuestro mundo. En un mundo donde las riquezas, el poder, la fama, el placer y narcisismo son valorado sobre todo,
encontramos a Jesús – nuestro ejemplo supremo – quien decisivamente le da la espalda a todo esto. Ni se somete a estos valores
falsos, en los cuales muchos buscan salvarse, ni los empleara en su misión. En el comienzo de su ministerio, de su misión, Jesús
decide de que la verdadera revolución tiene que ver mucho mas con el amor y la compasión, la misericordia y la bondad, la
justicia y la paz, que con las armas y el terror, los placeres y los trucos. En una sociedad consumerista, tan sumergida bajo
valores materiales comerciales que enfatizan la imagen superficial, el materialismo y entretenimiento, el placer y el egoísmo
como medios hacia la felicidad, el ‗Jesús del desierto‘ nos recuerda de lo que Santa Teresa de Ávila un día descubriría: ―El
que lo tiene todo, pero le falta Dios, posee nada; pero el que tiene nada, pero posee a Dios, lo tiene todo.ǁ Como cristianos
también nosotros podemos comenzar a adoptar inconscientemente las maneras falsas de pensar y valorar, de vivir y de actuar;
y así la Cuaresma nos llama al desierto, a abandonar nuestra esperanza en los ídolos y dejarnos ser atraídos por Dios a nuestra
alianza original de amor y de ser llevados y conducidos por el amor de Dios. La Cuaresma es un retorno a nuestras fundaciones
de fe y amor en Dios, de una renovación en ese amor, y de un avance y progreso mas halla de los limites que nos hemos
impuestos para así poder cumplir la misión de Jesús en nuestro mundo, sociedad, comunidades y familias. Dediquemos esta
Cuaresma especialmente por nuestros hermanos y hermanas cristianas en el Medio Oriente, en África, y en tantos lugares
donde diariamente ellos enfrentan el difícil desierto de la persecución brutal y del demonio cruel del genocidio. ¡Que la Iglesia se
un en esta Cuaresma y Pascua en respondiendo decisivamente a sus necesidades para ayudarlos con la misericordia a la cual
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
♦ La Cuaresma nos llama al desierto, hacia una
autentica renovación de nuestra fe, esperanza y amor
en Dios solo.
♦ La meta de la Cuaresma es la de dejar atrás todo lo
que nos aparta de Dios y de nuestro prójimo
necesitado para así ser libres para poder responder
mas radicalmente y mas resolutamente al Evangelio
de Jesucristo.
♦ Conducidos por el Espíritu hacia el desierto de la
Cuaresma nos preparamos a participar en el misterio
de la semana Pascual en unión con todos los cristianos
alrededor del mundo, particularmente los que sufren
la crucifixión del la cruel persecución.

Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en silencio,
comparta con otros sus ideas o sentimientos.
¿A que le necesito decir No‘ en esta Cuaresma para así
poder decir un Si‘ mas total a Dios?

introspección y de abnegación permitirme acercarme mas
a Dios?
3. ¿Qué puedo hacer esta Cuaresma para estar en
solidaridad con los cristianas alrededor del mundo que
están siendo probados por los demonios del terrorismo, la
persecución, y la guerra?

Nuestra iglesia es un lugar para rezar, dar gracias,
lamentarnos y celebrar. Un lugar para que todos —tanto
los necesitados como los que disfrutan de abundancia—
nos unamos en la misericordia, en sostenernos
mutuamente y en aliviarnos el dolor y el sufrimiento. Un
lugar al que la gente acude en sus momentos de necesidad.
Todos somos instrumentos de la misericordia y la paz de
Dios. Nuestra iglesia, nuestra familia, unidas para ayudar
a los necesitados.
¡Gracias a todos los que ya han respondido
generosamente al ABCD de este año! Su apoyo fortalece
los ministerios que sirven a nuestra Arquidiócesis y
permiten a la Iglesia formar nuevos discípulos. Como las
Escrituras nos recuerdan; Den y recibirán. Su prójimo
necesita de usted. Usted es la respuesta a las oraciones de
alguien, y juntos, estamos transformando vidas.

COCINAR PARA LOS DESAMPARADOS
Estamos invitando a nuestra comunidad de St. Agnes para que
participe en nuestro ministerio mensual de cocinarles a nuestros
desamparados de Camillus House. Sólo tiene que cocinar una
comida al mes en la comodidad de su casa y congelarla en su
refrigerador. Nosotros le entregamos la receta y el recipiente donde
se debe congelar. Los primeros jueves de mes, nos trae su comida
congelada a St. Agnes entre las 11:15 y 11:45 a.m. donde nuestro
grupo la recogerá y entregará a Camillus House. Es una forma

Anímate a participar en la Rifa de Cien Mil Dólares.
Por favor no esperes si quieres tener la oportunidad de
ganar hasta sesenta mil dólares. Tendremos 6 rifas de
diez mil dólares cada una, desde febrero hasta junio de
2016. La donación sugerida es $100 por boleto. Por
favor, llena un formulario de pedido lo más pronto
posible. Encontrarán formularios para ordenar

LAS DAMAS DE LA SOCIEDAD
DEL ALTAR Y DEL ROSARIO
El próximo fin de semana, 20 y 21 de febrero de 2016, se estará
realizando la colecta anual del ministerio de las Damas de la
Sociedad del Altar y del Rosario. Gracias a su donación annual,
desde su fundación en 1981, se ha podido mantener nuestra
Iglesia con arreglos florales, manteles, linos, velas y las vestiduras
sacerdotales. Toda contribución es bienvenida, contamos con su
apoyo y generosidad, con una donación mínima de 10 dólares. Su
talento y tiempo también son de gran ayuda. Dios los bendiga. Si

¡Inscríbete en los Talleres de Oración y Vida!
¡El Taller te llevará a través de las Escrituras y
diversas formas de oración a desarrollar una relación
intima con el Señor, convirtiendo a Jesús en tu mejor
amigo!
El Taller en español ya comenzó los días martes de
7:00 a 9:00 PM en el salón #403 del Centro Pastoral.
Tiene una duración de 15 semanas consecutivas con
sesiones cada martes. Por favor trae tu Biblia y un
cuaderno de notas.
