Family Camp
The 10th Family Camp Session for CCFSC families was held on June 5 - 7 at the Thousand Pines Christian
Camp in Crestline. The 3 day-2 night adventure began with a meet ‘n’ greet in the Malt Shop with all
the kids and their parents. The kids enjoyed an evening of group games to get to know each other
and that same evening we had a campfire filled with lots of songs, fun games, and yummy ‘smores.
There were plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy throughout the weekend. Families enjoyed arts &
crafts, courage courses, climbing wall and zip line, paintball, laser tag and outdoor games. Thousand
Pines treated our group to fresh baked cinnamon rolls followed by a night hike. We would like to give
a special thank you to our Family Camp Sponsors: the Silver Dollar Club and Thousand Pines Camp!
Thank you for offering us the opportunity to share a fun-filled weekend with the families. We would
also like to thank the wonderful staff at Thousand Pines for their kindness and care, and our volunteer
chaperones that helped us make this weekend of fun possible.

Picnic
Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California, CCFSC, together with the California Correctional Peace Officers Association provided a Family Picnic for families with a child with cancer at Hunter Hobby Park in Riverside, CA. Picnic was
held Sunday, June 14th from 11:30am-3:00pm. CCFSC provides this event in hopes of brightening the day for not only
the cancer patients but the entire family.
Children with cancer and their families enjoyed a fun filled day where they participated in Water Balloon Tosses, Three
Legged Races, Tug-A-War, and much more. The Live Steamers provided free train rides for participating families and the
California Correctional Peace Officers Association barbecued delicious hamburgers and hot dogs for all to enjoy. We were
also treated to delicious homemade ‘aguas frescas’ from the Escobar family. Families escape from their daily lives at the
hospital and have a great time in an ‘old-fashioned’ family picnic. There’s no better medicine than being surrounded by
family, friends, and good food!

to offer support services to the family while he was in treatment. We are pleased to share that he is doing very well and, a family friend has coordinated an anual charity golf

Candle Lighting Ceremonies
Every year Childhood Cancer Foundation invites families to join together in the month of September for two Candle Lighting
Ceremonies in honor of children who have or had cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and we strive
to bring as much community awareness as we can throughout the entire month.
The first Candle Lighting Ceremony was held in the breezeway between Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and
the Medical Center on September 2nd. We invite childhood cancer patients currently in treatment and those who are
now survivors to join us in a ceremony to mark the continued effort we will put together in their honor. Families join
together and visit with families who are recently diagnosed and offer their support. Others meet with old friends they
haven’t seen in a while.
Later in the month on September 17th, we came together once again this time to honor the memory of the children
we’ve lost but love and admire. Every family has experienced a loss and this offers them a moment to share memories,
stories, and encouragement to everyone who understands what they are going through. We light four candles: one for
our sadness, one for our memories, one for our love, and one for our commitment and then release balloons that carry
messages of love, of longing, and of hope to one day be with them again.
We would like to thank the National Charity League for offering their support and sponsoring the refreshments at the
Candle Lighting Ceremonies.

“Undefined by Cancer”
2016 Calendar
Childhood Cancer Foundation unveiled the 2016 “Undefined by Cancer” Calendar on November 16th at
the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. The 2016 Calendar features 12 current patients and aims
to embrace how these beautiful children are not defined by their cancer diagnosis. We are shining a light
on their lives, personalities and what truly makes them who they are. Our desire is that this calendar will
share their smile and spread HOPE to all those brave children who are currently fighting the battle against
cancer. Cancer is a life-threatening and devastating diagnosis but these courageous fighters are… “not
defined by cancer.”
Featured in the cover shot are firefighters of the San Manuel Fire Department that include Firefighter Scott
Simon, Fire Captain Ken Bryson, Paramedic Shane Donnelly, and firefighter Vince Tovar. San Manuel Band
of Mission Indians has sponsored the production of the calendar. The calendar sales as well as our other
fundraisers help us to continue the much needed services we provide.
Calendars are NOW AVAILABLE on-line at www.ccfsocal.org/calendar. Also available at the CCFSC Office
(11155 Mt. View Ave #105, Loma Linda 92354) for $10 each. While supplies last.

Calendario 2016
www.ccfsocal.org/calendar
Firefighter Scott Simon, Fire Captain Ken Bryson, Paramedic Shane Donnelly, y firefighter Vince Tovar. San

The Loma Linda Drayson Center was transformed into a Winter Wonderland for Childhood Cancer Foundation’s
34th Annual Christmas Celebration presented by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association. The
annual celebration is provided by Childhood Cancer Foundation with the desire to provide families who are
battling cancer the opportunity to enjoy the holidays in a safe environment.
More than 500 guests, including children and their parents, joined us to enjoy of the days holiday celebration. Children were surrounded with craft tables and activities to choose from, as Christmas music filled the
gym with holiday cheer. Families enjoyed pizza donated from Domino’s Pizza in Redlands and other goodies

Itiel. One of the most important guests of the party, Santa Claus, arrived shortly after the entertainment to
visit with each child. Each child received a wrapped gift from Santa and had a family photo taken courtesy
of Cyndee Pelton.
There are really too many people to thank for making this event special for the children and their families. But
we do wish to recognize the tremendous contribution of our donors. The Christmas Celebration was presented
by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association. Sponsors included: San Manuel Band of Mission
Indians, Loma Linda University and the Drayson Center. Additional donors listed in our Donor Recognition.

Dear families and friends of CCFSC,
I feel that I have completed one journey and started another. In 1985 my husband, Bernie, and I heard those words that all oncology parents will never forget;
“your child has cancer.” With that diagnosis, our journey began. With support from our family, friends, physicians and pediatric oncology staff we fought our
battle to help our son survive. What I realize now is that that diagnosis changed my life. When my son became well I decided to offer whatever help I could to
other families experiencing the same battle. That was 30 years ago. I have been blessed to help develop Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California
(formerly Candlelighters) into what it is today.
I am overwhelmed at the kindness of many families to allow me to interact with them at their most difficult time in life. I am grateful to our many supporters
over the years that have provided the opportunity to offer the many programs, activities and support to thousands of families. I leave the position of executive director with a heavy heart, but a heart filled with accomplishment. I am not sure where the next
journey will lead me, but my memories with all the special children and their families will always be
with me.
I will continue to participate at many of the family activities. And I am pleased to announce that
Stephanie Avila has accepted the Executive Director position. She has been with CCFSC for 8 years and
will do a great job.
Thank you to all for your kindness and support,
Armida Kersey
Me
Armida Kersey

rides and took pictures with the monsters and their Halloween displays.

Lakers Game
Teen Connection enjoyed the Maccabi Haifa at LA Lakers game on Sunday, October 11th
where the Lakers dominated the game and took the win for the evening. It was a first
time visit to a Lakers Game and the Staples Center itself for many of our group. The group
enjoyed dinner at King Taco, a Mexican fast food favorite, ending the evening with the
Lakers Game.

Cosmic Bowling
The teens along with chaperones Kristin and Stephanie started the night with dinner
at Jersey Mike’s in Redlands then headed off to Empire Bowl to test our bowling skills.
Music, lights, bowling, and fun! It was a fun and competitive game. We hope our new
teens had a great time and hope to see everyone again soon! Thank you to our chaperones
for a great night of fun in town!
