Dictionary
The Primary Picture Dictionary is a beautifully illustrated
dictionary of more than 600 key words for Primary students
of English. It has been specially designed to appeal to young
learners throughout the world.
The selection of lexical items has been made using Waystage,
and is based on Garnet Education’s extensive experience of
producing materials for Primary education.
There are two sections (Opposites and Verbs) at the back
of the book that feature adjectives and verbs alphabetically.
CD-ROM included
The vocabulary is grouped in a number of broad themes,
and low-frequency words have been avoided. Words have
sometimes been included on the basis of association rather
than strict categorization, since children do not always
categorize items in the same way as adults.
Comprehensive indexes at the back of the book help
readers to locate words and serve as a useful tool for
the teacher. Pronunciation guides are also included.

Fast Track to Reading is an accelerated reading programme designed for adult learners of English who
are not readily able to read the Roman alphabet. It can be used for students who cannot read at all and for
students who cannot cope with reading at speed.
It is designed for adult learners of English who already have a concept of reading: those who can read and
write in a linear phonetic language such as Arabic or Farsi, and those who are conversant with pictographic
languages such as Mandarin or Cantonese. However, it can also be used with students who have yet to gain
a concept of reading.
cog
Fast Track to Reading can be used before starting a course where reading is an integral element, or as a
reading element in parallel with a simple starter-level course. In mixed-ability classes where only some
students are unfamiliar with the English alphabet, the programme can be used for self-study outside class.
Topics include:

One-sound, one-letter combinations
More common regular and irregular representations of sounds and groups of sounds, including vowels
and diphthongs
Work on vowels, alternating with work on consonants

Peter Viney started teaching English in 1971. He is the co-author of many popular textbook
series in both British English and American English, including Streamline and IN English. He
has also co-authored thirteen video courses and is the author of self-study video-led materials.
Peter was series editor of the Storylines series of graded readers, for which he has written many
graded readers. He has maintained a major interest in extensive reading. In the 1980s, he
co-wrote Learn English Handwriting and Basic English Reading Programme – designed to teach
initial writing and reading to students from non-Roman alphabet cultures. Peter has recently
revisited this area and the result is Fast Track to Reading.

The Garnet Oracle Readers are one of Garnet Education’s new series for 2012. Currently comprising
16 titles across four stages – from beginner to pre-intermediate – the series is carefully graded,
lexically and structurally, to encourage children and young adults to read for pleasure and at speed.
The stories are all, first and foremost, just that – stories, from ELT authors well known for their ability
to craft original and engaging narratives to entertain and educate.
Each Reader contains striking and contemporary full-colour illustrations and photos, resource pages
of well-scaffolded exercises, and an easy-to-use glossary. Titles in Levels 1 and 2 are 32 pages each,
while titles in Levels 3 and 4 are 40 pages each. Each Reader is available with or without an audio CD.
The series editor, Peter Viney, has over 40 years’ ELT experience, and now combines his writing
with lecturing and teacher-training commitments internationally. He is the author/co-author of many
successful textbook series and a wide range of highly popular video courses. Peter has been series
editor and author on a number of graded reader series. Peter has also written Fast Track to Reading

Where are we going now, Zarg?
We’re going to my planet. To Zok. Oh, Wayne
Armstrong, my planet is very beautiful.
You’re going to like it there.
When? When am I going to see it, Zarg?
Soon. Very soon. About three of your Earth
months.
Three months!
Yes, it isn’t a long way. About sixty light years.
Sixty light years!
A light year is how far light travels in one year.
Yes, right, I know. At three hundred thousand
kilometres a second.
No, not that fast. Only two hundred and
ninety nine thousand, seven hundred and
ninety two point four five eight kilometres a
second, Wayne Armstrong. But we don’t
travel like that. Our spaceships travel in a
different way.
Right … so when am I going to see the Earth
again?
That’s another story, Wayne Armstrong.
Another story.
Zarg, don’t call me Wayne Armstrong every
time. Just call me Wayne.
I’m not calling you anything, Wayne
Armstrong. Remember, it’s the translation
computer, not me.
But in America we don’t use two names. You
can say ‘Wayne’ or you can say ‘Mr
Armstrong’, but you never say ‘Wayne
Armstrong’. The computer is wrong.
The computer is never wrong, Wayne
Armstrong.
My diary – 3
Are there any more Grogons on the spaceship? I see only Zarg. Is
he the only Grogon? I don’t know. My room is white. There are no
windows. There’s a door, but I can’t see it. When Zarg comes, I
can see the door and it opens. He comes in, then it’s a wall again.
The door opens for Zarg, but it doesn’t open for me.
Zoo Diary
Peter Viney
There’s nothing in the room, just the diary and pen in my coat. I
sit on the floor and I sleep on the floor. When I walk, the floor is
hard. When I sleep, it isn’t hard. It’s different. It’s like a bed. I
don’t understand. I have only one pen and this diary. I sleep a lot
of the time. Sometimes Zarg comes in and we talk.
