My 2¢
The First Law of Thermodynamics states that matter is not created or destroyed,
only transformed. The same law applies to television, where programs are not
created from scratch or destroyed, but constantly transformed.
A
bout seven years ago, Norman Horowitz wrote that,
when he was at Columbia Pictures in the 1970s, a
friend asked him what he did for a living. Norman
explained (I’m paraphrasing, in reality, knowing Norman,
it is possible that he took half a day to elaborate) that his
job was to sell stuff to television stations outside the United
States and sell TV re-runs and movies inside of the States.
At this point the friend — rather confused — interjected:
“Norman, you are in the used film business!”
If one thinks about it, the whole television industry
revolves around the “used” business model. After all, the
U.S. film industry started with some entrepreneurs that
came from the garment business selling “used” clothes.
Many years ago, in the early days of television, the
industry’s business model was based on “sponsored content,”
where a company, like Procter & Gamble, would pay to be
associated with a TV soap opera such as As the World Turns.
This concept was also “used”
since it was taken from the old
radio days.
Today, sponsored content
is called by various names:
branded content, sponsored
verticals, barker show, profile
builder, etc. The fact remains,
however, that it is still a “used”
business model. The 60-second
TV spot, too, is a used concept
dating from colonial America
when Benjamin Franklin’s
Pennsylvania Gazette used to
place short advertisements
next to editorial material.
Today, film and TV producers and broadcasters
are more comfortable with tried and true
“used” concepts than original untested ones,
and the public enjoys watching re-runs of
TV shows as much as multiple incarnations
of Spiderman.
Indeed, the “used” TV business has
created a new sector spearheaded by such
TV channels as TV Land and programming
blocks like Nickelodeon’s Nick at Nite, which
re-use classic shows. This is in addition to a
plethora of cooking shows that take us back
to the used and reused early TV style.
If
one thinks
about it, the whole
television industry
revolves around the
“used” business model
And what about the complex business of
residuals, which is based on the simple concept
that talent should be paid on “used” runs?
The “used” business model is also used by the
fashion
industry
(they call it retro).
And, according to
an article in New York
Magazine last March, we now
have an increasing number
of feminists who choose to
stay home and are called
“retro wives,” who are happy
to be in the business of their
grandmothers.
The irony is that we at

reality is more sober, since there isn’t anything to secondguess about the secondhand business.

new Israeli television channel dubbed i24news, will broadcast news
24 hours a day in English, French and Arabic, starting this summer.
i24news will incorporate state-of-the-art technology, applications for
cell phones, video-on-demand, a website, and offer 24-hour news coverage in
three languages. The channel will be based in Jaffa Port near Tel Aviv.
According to Carlos Burovich, head of production for i24news, the channel
will compete with established global news outlets like Al Jazeera and will be funded privately. Partial funding will
come from French-Israeli businessman and telecommunications mogul Patrick Drahi. Frank Melloul, a former
French government adviser on security and disarmament, will be the chief executive.
The channel will air live news reports daily from 6 a.m. to midnight and taped programming during the remaining
time. Plus, i24news will launch a website in English, French and Arabic simultaneously with the channel launch.
Programming will include hard news, interviews and news magazines, and the current staff of 45 is projected to
grow to approximately 150.

Currently, Amazon operates

The police acted after Indian

Using servers located in 14
countries including Australia,
the U.S.A., China, Russia and
Romania, the pirates were able
to stream over 400,000 movies,
some of which are still in theaters,
causing losses estimated at $1.5

It is considered Europe’s largest
crackdown on pirate streaming

Airline Seats 101
In 1962, the width of the American
backside in the seated position
averaged 35 cm for men and 36 for
women. In 2002 a study showed
an average increase to more than
38 cm.
The male hip, which the airline
industry has used to determine
seat width, is the wrong
dimension. The widest part of
the body is the shoulder/arm
area. The result: Airline seats are
approximately 13 cm too narrow,
even for passengers in the 1960s.
Current standard coach seat
widths range from 43 to 48 cm
between the armrests, known in
the industry as “living space.”
However, in airline-seat speak
the operative word is “pitch,”
defined as the distance between
one point on a seat and the same
point on the seat behind. A typical
seat pitch in coach measures 78
to 89 cm.
In a traditional reclining airline
seat, only the seatback moves.
But with an articulating seat pan,
as the back moves to the rear, the
seat pan moves forward, so the
back of the seat doesn’t move as
far as it once did. Because the seat
doesn’t require as much room to
recline, there’s space for more
seats. New economy class seats
will allow for six additional coach
seats per plane.

in Switzerland and France, he has come across people
of different cultures and gained some insight into
centuries of history.
