Students entering 4th-7th grade, beginning (no experience) to advanced players
Beginners and advanced players will by divided into appropriate groups for instruction
WHEN:
June 24 - July 19, 2013, from 8:30 a.m.– 12:00 p.m.
Enrollment is by week. All beginners are required to attend the first week and then any
additional weeks as desired.
WHERE:
Solana Pacific School, Music Room, Room 101
3901 Townsgate Drive, San Diego 92130
INSTRUMENT CHOICES:
Students need an instrument to participate in the band program. Instrument choices are flute,
clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone and percussion (i.e. drums). Families
should rent or purchase as instrument prior to the first class. Please contact Robyn Glasson
(contact info below) for instrument/rental advice.
ABOUT THE SUMMER BAND PROGRAM:
The Summer Band program is a great way to give your child an introduction to a musical
instrument and/or to motivate and inspire them if they already play a band instrument. During
the first week of Summer Band we have instrument specific coaches working with students to
get them playing their instrument of choice. The following weeks they will continue to develop
their playing skills as well as learn how to read music and the art of teamwork as they play
together as a band. Also, if your child enjoys the Summer Band Program, we offer an after
school band program throughout the school year at Skyline. Parents needing extended care
after Summer Band can register for CDC’s Summer Camp at Solana Pacific. Refer to the
CDC website: www.sbsd.net/cdc for more information.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
Frank Glasson, a native of San Diego, has performed both locally and abroad in the trumpet
sections of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Opera, Middel Deutsche
Rundfunk Orchestra of Germany, Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, State Theater and
National Chamber Orchestras of South Africa and has appeared as soloist with the latter two.
Also an accomplished jazz performer, Frank received a Grammy nomination for “Best Jazz
Instrumental Solo” for his improvised solos on the recording “Jazztet” in 2006. Frank is a
Yamaha performing artist and can be seen performing with Orchestra Nova, Pacific
Symphony of Orange County, Tokyo Opera, La Jolla Playhouse, Broadway San Diego, and
Classics 4 Kids. He maintains a teaching studio and served as conductor of the Pretoria Youth
Symphony (South Africa), Jazz Band Director at Palomar College, adjunct Trumpet
Professor at San Diego State University and as conductor of the CYO Wind Ensemble. Frank
served 8 years as President of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 325.
Frank Glasson, Director: “I am a professional trumpet player, born and raised in Solana Beach
and I myself learned to play the trumpet at Skyline School. I am vested in nurturing a high
quality band program in our school district. I am passionate about music and believe that my
dynamic approach will inspire the band to new heights as the best learning comes when you
enjoy what you are doing. I encourage interested students to talk to current members of the
band to hear first hand what a rewarding experience being part of a band can be.”
