Mark Knestout, this is an ongoing pastoral care ministry. St. Stephen Ministers are members of the parish, intensely trained to care for people who are experiencing a loss, or going through difficult times or life transitions. JUNE 5, 2016 SOCIAL CONCERNS The Poor Box for the month of June is for Bethesda Cares, a non-profit which serves the county’s homeless and working poor. Gabriel Network (formerly Gabriel Project) is an interfaith support network offering practical, emotional, spiritual assistance to those in crises pregnancy and have decided against abortion. There is always a need for diaper and wipes. A bin will be left at the back of the church through the end of May. At present, a medically high risk expectant mom referred by Gabriel Network with a due date of mid-June is in very great need of infant clothing (boy), stroller, baby carrier, and items related to nursing, feeding, diaper and wipes. If you or a family member has outgrown need for these items and are looking to donate, please contact Selma Deleon at 240 372 5915 or [email protected]. Our Lady of Lourdes on East West Highway has a homeless program providing meals on Sunday nights and a “clothes closet” where needy guests can obtain donated clothing? Men's Clothing is always needed. You can bring items to Our Lady of Lourdes school cafeteria from 4:30 to 5:30 PM on Sundays and ask for location of drop off. Since the clothes closet is a bit hidden, we would be happy to assist. Next weekend, June 11-12, the Little Sisters of the Poor will be coming to our parish to request our assistance with their mission in caring for the Elderly Poor. The Sisters will be at the doors of the Church after each Mass to accept voluntary gifts of support. Thank you for your kindness in return. St. Bartholomew CYO SOCCER - we are now registering for fall Soccer for both boys and girls. Please respond to the registration link that has been emailed out to everyone this past week. CROSS COUNTRY – after yet another successful season, we are now registering for the upcoming fall cross country season. If you are a new runner or skilled we welcome all to come run with us. We will also have a "Marathon Challenge" over the summer break for the runners who sign up. Each runner can log the miles they run over the summer totaling 26.2 miles over the course. Those that complete the 26.2 miles will be recognized at the first practice. TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME If you would like to sponsor flowers on the altar in memory of loved ones, living or deceased, please print your name, phone number, and the occasion or loved one you wish to remember on a purple Flower Contribution envelope, which you will find in the church vestibule. Minimum contribution for two vases on the main altar is between $90—100. Please drop off your envelope in the collection basket, or call the parish office, 301-229-7933, and your request will be posted in the weekly bulletin. We can only honor one individual request per weekend, so please bear in mind that, sometimes, the date you require may already be taken. Also, for your information, we will not be able to accept requests for the sponsoring of flowers on specific liturgical dates. St. Bart's Middle School Youth Group: we are 6th, 7th and 8th graders interested in serving our neighbor, playing together and getting to know Our Lord Jesus Christ! All are welcome! Adult Education Opportunity during the Year of Mercy! St. Bartholomew parishioner Judge Roy Smith will lead a group discussion on The Name of God is Mercy, a book compiled from a interview between Pope Francis and the renowned Italian journalist Andrea Tornielli. The group will meet for four consecutive Tuesdays, beginning on June 28, in the Library at Bartholomew Assisted Living. To encourage attendees at the 8.00 a.m. daily Mass to participate, the 90 minute discussions will start at 8.45 a.m. and coffee will be served. Books will be provided - in order to have an idea of how many books to order, please call the rectory at 301-2297933 by Monday June 13 to register for the discussion. I recently received a letter from Donald Cardinal Wuerl and it reads as follows: “…..I offer my sincere appreciation to the entire parish community of Saint Bartholomew for your generous response to the 2016 Cardinal’s Appeal. Your efforts have resulted in reaching and exceeding your parish goal of $182,263. As of April 1, 2016, 269 pledges in the amount of $234,656 have been received Thank you!” I thank you, too, for your generous commitment and goodness. St. Andrew the Apostle parish in Silver Spring is offering a Mass with Healing Prayers for Children on Friday, June 10, at 6:30pm. All families with children, infants through 8th grade, are welcome! BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH BETHESDA, MD DECIMO DOMINGO ORDINARIO 05 DE JUNIO DE 2016 El Evangelio de hoy nos narra otro milagro de Jesús, el de la resurrección de un joven que ha fallecido. Este milagro es precedido por el de la sanación del siervo del oficial romano. Las palabras que Jesús pronuncia durante este suceso revelan aspectos importantes de su ministerio. Primero, Jesús ha venido a consolar a los afligidos. Segundo, Jesús tiene poder hasta sobre la muerte. El que Jesús hable con tanta autoridad y que la tenga sobre algo tan poderoso como la muerte es muy significativo porque, por un lado, solo Dios tiene autoridad absoluta; y por otro, porque el tener poder sobre la muerte significa tener poder sobre el pecado, pues la muerte es el resultado final del pecado. Al hablar y obrar como lo hace Jesús, los testigos de aquel suceso tuvieron que reconocer que es Dios quien habla y actúa por medio de Jesús, es decir que Jesús es el enviado de Dios. Sin embargo los que fueron testigos de este milagro no lo reconocen todavía como el Mesías, como el hijo de Dios, confundiéndolo con un gran profeta, posiblemente Elías, ya que todos estaban familiarizados con la historia del milagro de la resurrección del hijo de la viuda que realizó este gran profeta y que se narra en la primera Lectura de el primer libro de los Reyes. Los milagros de Jesús son parte de su predicación y signos de la salvación que Dios, por medio de su Hijo, ofrece a toda la humanidad.
