FYI: October 9, 2016-28th Sunday in Ordinary Time XXVIII XXVIII Domingo Ordinario 9 de Octubre de 2016 Today’s FYI will have a mixture of various themes. First and foremost I would like to speak about gratitude and humility. In today’s Scriptures, there are two accounts of healing. In both cases, those who asked for healing were in dire straits. In both cases, the victims suffered from the disease of leprosy. Today, leprosy or Hanson’s disease is easily controlled through a series of antibiotics. Previously, a person who suffered from the disease was isolated and shunned. There were strict laws that prevented contact between a person suffering from leprosy and the outside world. Lepers were called ‘unclean’ and were forced to announce their presence by ringing a bell and announcing that they were ‘unclean’ and therefore to be avoided. In the first Reading taken from 2 Kings, Naaman is a high ranking official who has been afflicted with this disease. He has run out of options in regard to a cure in his native country and seeks the help of the Prophet Elisha. At first, he is reluctant to follow Elisha’s advice and then is persuaded to do all that the Prophet has commanded. He is cured! In his gratefulness, he wants to reward Elisha, but Elisha reminds Naaman who is to be thanked and adored. Naaman in his actions shows forth his gratitude and humility. In the Gospel reading we hear once again the proclamation of the curing of the ten lepers. These ten lepers are at the end of their rope. They have been turned out of their homes, rejected by their families and friends. They are considered ‘dead’ by many who knew them. Their prayer, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us” is indicative of their desire to be set free from this horrible disease. We know from the Gospel, that Jesus tells them “Go show yourselves to the priests,” nothing else. Yet on the way, they realize that something miraculous has occurred! Indeed, something very strange happens, all know they have been cured, yet only one returns to show his gratitude! This man is a Samaritan according to the Gospel. According to Jewish custom of the time, this man would have been shunned by the Jewish people because the Jews would have considered a Samaritan an outsider and a heretic. Yet, this man is the one who exemplifies true gratitude and humility. Gratitude and humility are two virtues that remind us of our dependence upon God and others for our well-being. No human being is so independent or self-sufficient that they don’t need another’s help from time-to-time. Every human being is unique and precious in the eyes of God and everyone is given talents to build up creation, not apart from, but a part of the rest of creation. An old saying goes, “What you are is God’s gift to you. What you become is your gift to God!” I am so grateful and thankful to almighty God for all of you! I am so blessed to be your Pastor. I am so thankful to live with four other wonderful friars, Sam, Germain, Richard and Gabriel. I am humbled by your kindness and goodness. These in turn help me on my journey of gratitude and humility. One of our faith-formation students said to me recently, “Father, we’re all in this together.” Talk about wisdom coming from the mouths of children and babes! Brothers and sisters, while we have time, let us do good! ~ Fr. Dan • P.S. Monday, October 10 is Fr. Sam’s and my feast-day.
