My dear parishioners,
Sunday, July 31, was the last official day of World Youth
Day. After a night of sleeping out in the open air in our
sleeping bags, people began to wake up with the rising
sun. The priests in our section, gathered together at 7 am
to begin our walk to the area where we would be able to
concelebrate the Mass with the Holy Father. Although the
Mass was not scheduled to begin until 10 am, we had to
arrive early to pass through security and to obtain the
vestments each priest who attended would receive. The
vestments were a white color with a gold cross going the
length of the chasuble and two rays, blue and red, crossing the vestment. The red and blue rays are symbolic of
Divine Mercy, which was the constant theme throughout
World Youth Day, since we were in the land of St. Faustina
and St. John Paul II.
The day was very hot and there was no shade
from the sun. Water was very much in demand as we
awaited the arrival of Pope Francis. Pope Francis celebrated the Mass, along with fifty cardinals, eight hundredfifty bishops and twenty-six thousand priests. TWENTYSIX THOUSAND PRIESTS! To put that in perspective, that
would be half of the priests in the United States. We had a
beautiful Mass with a mixture of Latin and Polish. The
Holy Father spoke primarily in Italian and those with
transistor radios could hear simultaneous translations.
Considering there were 2.5 million people present, Holy
Communion went very smoothly. After the Mass, we began a six-mile hike back to our buses to take us to our hotels.
After arriving at the hotel, we had about an hour
to shower and change. We then boarded our buses for a
visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. This salt mine had been in
operation for seven hundred years. We were given a tour
throughout the mine and we learned how the salt was
mined over the centuries. Many of the miners, in their
free time, made sculptures out of the salt, which we saw.
The most fascinating of all were the three chapels we saw,
carved out of the salt. The largest one looked like a cathedral, with beautiful statues of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and
St. John Paul II. It was incredible to see the love and art of
the men who carved this chapel and the furnishings. After
our tour, we were led to a large dining room within the
salt mine where we had a dinner with Bishop DiMarzio
and the entire diocesan pilgrim group.
I can say that after one week in Poland, we had
fallen in love with the country. The people were so
friendly and welcoming, the food delicious and the faith
strong. I want to return next year with a group from the
parish.

El domingo 31 de julio fue el último día oficial
del Día Mundial de la Juventud (WYD). Después de una
noche durmiendo al aire libre en nuestras bolsas de dormir, la gente se empezó a despertar con la salida del sol.
Los sacerdotes en nuestra sección, se reunieron a las 7
am para empezar nuestra caminata al área donde podríamos celebrar la Misa con el Santo Padre. Aunque la Misa no estaba programada para comenzar si no hasta las
10 am, tuvimos que llegar temprano para poder pasar por
seguridad y obtener las vestimentas que cada sacerdote
que atendía recibiría. Las vestimentas eran de color
blanco con una cruz dorada que va la longitud de la casulla y dos rayos, azules y rojos, que cruzaban la vestimenta. Los rayos rojos y azules son simbólicos de la
Divina Misericordia, el cual fue el tema constante durante todo el Día Mundial de la Juventud, ya que estábamos
en la tierra de Santa Faustina y San Juan Pablo II.
El día estaba muy caliente y no había sombra
del sol. El agua estaba en tremenda demanda mientras
que esperábamos la llegada del Papa Francisco. El Papa
Francisco celebró la Misa, con los cincuenta cardenales,
ochocientos cincuenta obispos y veintiséis mil sacerdotes. ¡VENTISEIS MIL SACERDOTES! Para poner eso
en perspectiva, eso sería la mitad de los sacerdotes en los
Estado Unidos. Tuvimos una misa bella con una mezcla
de latín y polaco. El Santo Padre hablo principalmente
en italiano y los que tenían radio transistor podían oír la
traducción simultánea. Considerando que habían 2.5
millones de personas presente, la comunión se desarrolló
sin contratiempos. Después de la misa, empezamos una
caminata de seis millas para regresar a nuestros buses y
así regresar a nuestros hoteles.
Después de llegar al hotel, tuvimos una hora
para bañarnos y cambiarnos. Luego nos montamos a
nuestros buses para visitar la Mina de Sal Wieliczka.
Esta salina había estado operando por setecientos años.
Nos dieron una gira por toda la mina y aprendimos como
se había extraído la sal a lo largo de los siglos. Muchos
de los mineros, en du tiempo libre, hicieron esculturas en
la sal, las cuales pudimos ver. La más grande de todas
parecía una catedral, con lindas estatuas de Jesús, La
Virgen María y San Juan Pablo II. Fue increíble ver el
amor y el arte de los hombres que tallaron esta capilla y
el mobiliario. Después de nuestra gira, nos llevaron a un
comedor grande dentro de la salina donde tuvimos una
cena con el Obispo DiMarzio y el grupo peregrino completo de la diócesis.
Puedo decir que después de una semana en Polonia, nos habíamos enamorado del país. La gente era
tan amable y acogedora, la comida deliciosa y la fe
fuerte. Quiero regresar el próximo año con un grupo
de la parroquia.

Dear Parishioners of Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians,
As you know, we came back from World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland a
few weeks ago. We would just like to take this opportunity to thank you
and all the people in your families who sponsored our pilgrimage by
participating in our many fundraisers in the years, months and even
weeks leading up to our wonderful experience in Krakow with the millions of young (and not so young) pilgrims from all over the world.
This experience has given each of us new perspective of our
place in this world, our country, and in our community. We have learned
how to serve our family, friends and parish with great vigor. This trip
has inspired us to renew our passion in our ministries. We encourage
you to continue to watch and support us in our ministries, whether it be
Kerryclare in her ministry of Drama, Ashley in her ministries of faith
formation as a teacher and catechist as well as in our sacristy, Claire in
her ministries of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and catechist, Tiffany in her ministry of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Margarita in her ministry of faith formation for our young ladies in
the Daughters of the King program, and Alexa in her ministries of Leader
of Song and Children’s Choir director.
Every time you witness one of us performing in our ministry,
it should give you hope for the Church. We work hard and love performing our ministry for you. In the words of Pope Francis in his speech to us
at the prayer vigil during our overnight; “we did not come into this work
to ‘vegetate’…we came for another reason: to leave a mark.” Through our
ministries here in the church we are trying to leave a mark. We will continue to serve in this parish because it is our second home. It is where we
meet Jesus every day. We are here serving and every week when we
come together with you for the sacrifice of the Holy Mass. Know that this
is not the last you will see of us. We will continue to grow and develop in
our ministries as we praise and worship Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
In Poland, we have connected and made steps to form a lasting
relationship with Him. This opportunity could not have been achieved
without the support, love, and prayers from our Parish family. We thank
you and continue to pray for your intentions, as we are sure you have
been praying for ours. Be on the lookout for our fire and be prepared to
capture our enthusiasm as we begin to look forward to our next worldly
encounter with Our Lord in Panama 2019.

The one single bell that was cast from fragments of the ruins
from the original 1854 Church hung above the school. With
increased enrollment, a larger school was necessary. The
cornerstone for this brick and stone building was laid in 1915
and remains in use today. By 1922, the old wooden schoolhouse., that began in 1889 as the Parish School, was given a
new role and became the Clubhouse for parish activities:
society meeting rooms were on the first floor while Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for the teens and parish
dances were held on the second floor. Once again, fire
plagued the Parish and the Clubhouse was destroyed in 1950:
a short circuit was considered to be the cause. The bell was
salvaged and remained in the convent yard along with the
cornerstones from the 2 previous Churches (1854 and 1888).
On January 10, 1979, marking the 125 th Anniversary of the
Parish and the121st Anniversary of the School, the bell was
moved from the convent yard to the front of the new school
building facing 70th Street; it was unveiled on a new cement
foundation and the original cornerstones. Tragedy again
struck the parish: following the turn of the century, the historic bell was stolen from its foundation only to be returned;
yet taken again from the rectory yard never to be found. The
Church cornerstones remain on the original site standing blatantly alone.

Estimados feligreses de María Auxiliadora
Como saben, hace unas semanas, regresamos del Día Mundial de
la Juventud en Krakow, Polonia. Nos gustaría tomar esta oportunidad para darles las gracias a Uds. y a toda la gente en su familia
quienes apoyaron nuestro peregrinaje participando en una de nuestras recaudaciones de fondos en los años, meses y aun semanas
antes de nuestra maravillosa experiencia en Krakow con los millones de jóvenes (y no tan jóvenes) peregrinos de todas partes del
mundo.
Esta experiencia nos ha dado a cada una de nosotras una perspectiva nueva de nuestro lugar en este mundo, nuestro país, y nuestra
comunidad. Hemos aprendido como servir a nuestra familia, amigos y parroquia con gran vigor. Este viaje nos ha inspirado a renovar nuestra pasión por nuestros ministerios. Le recomendamos
que sigan viendo y apoyándonos en nuestros ministerios, sea a
Kerryclare en su ministerio de Drama, Ashley en sus ministerios
de Formación de Fe como una maestra y catequista lo mismo que
en la sacristía, Claire en su ministerio como Ministro Extraordinario de la Sagrada Comunión y catequista, Tiffany en su Ministerio
como Ministro de la Sagrada Comunión, Margarita en su ministerio de Formación de Fe para nuestras jóvenes en el programa de
las Hijas del Rey, y Alexa en sus ministerios de Líder de Canción
y directora del Coro de las Niños.
Cada vez que Ud. es testigo de una de nosotras llevando a cabo
nuestro ministerio, eso debía darle esperanza para la Iglesia. Trabajamos duro y nos gusta desempeñar nuestro ministerio para Uds.
En las palabras del Papa Francisco en su discurso en la vigilia de
oración durante nuestra estadía nocturna; “no llegamos a este trabajo para ‘vegetar’…vinimos por otra razón: para dejar una huella.” Por medio de nuestros ministerios aquí en la iglesia estamos
tratando de dejar una huella. Continuaremos sirviendo en esta
parroquia porque es nuestro segundo hogar. Es donde nos encontramos con Jesús todos los días. Estamos aquí sirviendo y cada
semana nos reunimos con Uds. para el sacrificio de la santísima
misa. Sepan que esto no será lo último que ven de nosotros. Continuaremos creciendo y desarrollándonos en nuestros ministerios a
la vez que alabamos y adoramos a Nuestro Señor, Jesucristo.
En Polonia, nos conectamos y hemos tomado pasos para formar
una relación duradera con El. Esta oportunidad no se hubiera
podido lograr sin el apoyo, amor, y oraciones de nuestra familia
parroquial. Les damos las gracias y continuamos orando por sus
intenciones, de la misma forma que estamos seguras que Uds. oran
por las nuestras. Estén pendientes de nuestro fuego y estén preparados para capturar nuestro entusiasmo así que empezamos a mirar
al futuro a nuestro próximo encuentro terrestre con Nuestro Señor

¿Sabía usted?
Una sola campana fue fundida de los fragmentos de las
ruinas de la iglesia original de 1854 y estaba colgada encima del colegio. Con el aumento de inscripciones, se necesitaba un colegio más grande. Se puso la primera piedra
de este edificio de ladrillo y piedra en 1915 y aún permanece en uso. Para 1922, la escuela vieja de madera, que
empezó en 1889 como el colegio de la parroquia, tomó un
papel nuevo y se volvió el nuevo sitio de reuniones para
las diferentes actividades de la parroquia (el Clubhouse):
salones de reunión para diferentes sociedades estaban en
el primer piso mientras que las clases de Confraternidad
de la Doctrina Cristiana para los jóvenes y los bailes de la
parroquia se hacían en el segundo piso. Una vez más,
fuego plago a la parroquia y el Clubhouse fue destruido en
1950: se consideró que un corto circuito fue la causa del
incendio. La campana fue rescatada y permaneció en el
patio del convento junto con las primeras piedras de las 2
iglesias anteriores (1854 y 1888). El 10 de enero de 1979,
marcando el ciento vigésimo quinto aniversario de la Parroquia y el ciento vigésimo primer aniversario del colegio, la campana se movió del patio del convento a la parte
de adelante del edificio del colegio nuevo al frente de la
calle 70; se dio a conocer en una cemento con las primeras
base de piedras originales. Nuevamente tragedia golpeo a
la parroquia: tras el cambio del siglo, la campana histórica se la robaron de la base en que estaba solo para ser devuelta; pero tomada de nuevo del patio de la casa parroquial y nunca se volvió a encontrar. Las primeras piedras
permanecen
de la iglesia
en su sitio
original descaradamente
solas.
