RESEARCH AND/OR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Funded research: List of grants or contracts that I have received from different sources, as a member
of the IMT AvH of the UPCH since 1984 at the present, and the Peruvian National Institute of Health
(INS) 1984-1998, I have been the Principal Investigator (PI) for several projects. This list of the
projects is in chronological order starting with the most recent:
2007-2012: Pilot Plant for production of Bti with community Participation. Supported by FINCyT (BID)
(US$200,000).
2009-2011: ECO-REGIONAL NETWORK FOR DEVELOPMENT OF EARLY WARNING SYSTEM
(EWS) for surveillance and prevention of dengue in Latin America, I am coordinator for Peru,, see the

Instituto De Medicina Tropical Alexander Von Humboldt, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia
(IMT - UPCH).
2006-2007: Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). Evaluación eco –regional del
efecto de la variación climática sobre la transmisión de dengue. Supported by IAI/IDRC
(US$10,000).
2004-2007: Immunological studies of Bartonellosis, supported by DIGOS, Belgian Government. (US$
45,000).
2004-2005: Evaluation of knowledge and attitudes of the communities of the Salitral-Sullana District,
Piura, Peru, after six years of education (1992-1998) in the biological control of malaria (see BCM.
1989-1996). Supported by CONCYTEC-Peru (US$ 10,000). We conducted the knowledge, attitudes,
and practices survey of Malaria-Dengue in Salitral (intervened 1992-1996) and Querecotillo (control).
We found that the people from Salitral had more knowledge that the people from Querecotillo about
larvicidal-Bti and control methods (environmental management, personal protection, biological
control etc). Conclusion: With increased knowledge provided by the BCM project, the people change
their attitudes and practice and now they do not have malaria and dengue.
2003-2005: Evaluation of and residual effect of VectoBac (B. thuringiensis supsp. isralensis H-14) in
the control of larvae of An. pseudopunctipennis, An. albimanus, and Culex quinquefaciatus of
different endemic area of Peru. Supported by WHO (US$12,000).
2002-2005: Production of Bti using the alternative premises for the control of Malaria and dengue,
supported by NGO:RIVER OF THE WORLD (US$ 98,000).
1999-2001: Transference of technology in the production of Bti from the university to the Region of
Health of Loreto. Supported by NGO:RIVER OF THE WORLD (US$ 25,000).
1997-1998: Controlling Malaria. Supported by Canadian embassy in Peru (CAD$ 5000).
1995-1996: Study of Anopheles sp. in different ecological niches and their distribution in SullanaPiura. Supported by PAHO/WHO (US$3000).
1989-1996. Biological Control of Malaria (BCM) Phases I & II in Piura-Perú:1989-1996
(CDN$329,545) Supported by IDRC. The latter project was a University-Community joint effort, with
partial involvement of the Entomology Section of the local formal Health system. Several disciplines
were represented in the research team: Anthropology, Sociology, Epidemiology, Microbiology,
Education, Entomology. Work was done in four communities with 17 field workers, many teachers,
students and schoolchildren and three local Community Organizations. The methodology included
initial social, anthropological, epidemiological and ecological diagnoses with the reference groups
(Schools, a local Library youth group, a Catholic families group) with specific educational
methodologies for each. The subjects/titles were: What is the meaning of control?, Biological control,
Identification of the species and larval stages of mosquitoes (Anopheles, Culex, Aedes), Biological
cycle of Anopheles, Malaria transmission, What is Bti?, Production of coconut-Bti, Application of
coconut-Bti and new alternatives, Use of Bti, Rapid diagnostic methods to prevent and control
malaria by the community. Evaluation and strengthening activities were performed after one year of
the main intervention.
1987, Bactericidal Effect of Sunlight on Water for Human Consumption at Different Altitudes Above
Sea Level. (US$ 3500), National Council for Science and Technology, CONCYTEC.
1986, Bactericidal Effect of Candida krusei, (US $ 2500), FarmIndustria.
