This catalogue has been published for the first time as a companion piece to my exhibition, entitled Después del chocolate, which was held in Galería Cuatro (Valencia) from September to November 2014. The first pieces, small format drawings, began their gestation in 2013. The accumulation of emotions which assaulted me at this time made texts falls over the image in an attempt to express these feelings to the full and through all media, creating characters who talked, loudspeakers for my shy and robotic brush. Artist The other pieces in the exhibition are a natural evolution, the amplification of this need, expressing itself in larger formats, on canvas and on paper, with the same intention, the same force, and with a selfless revelation of these boiling moods, generated in the first person with the simple movement of life. Among the selection of images, I also exhibited La oportunidad de las moscas (“The Flies’ chance”): an installation in which a container for flies which are made from thread is shown open, the flies having managed to escape. Other flies, drawn in pencil on the walls, take over the corners of the gallery. At the same time, a piercing sound of wild animals completes the scene. This multimedia installation project reflects on appetites, desires, and the drives which bring us closer to or distances us from them. It uses an old saying with great moral resonance, which I have heard ever since I was little, as a point of departure: “In life, one must learn to sip like a bee, without dropping like a fly”. Well, the flies in this installation have this opportunity: they can fly, staying in control of the situation, or get stuck, succumbing to their own ambition. In addition to the expression of emotion in all these works, which are directly connected to intimate experiences, there is another perspective which takes stock of our surroundings. Después del chocolate is also a reflection on society. The idea for the title came from the film Merci pour le chocolat (“Thanks for the chocolate”) by C. Chabrol. In this film, every day the protagonist offers her husband a cup of hot chocolate in which she dissolves a small amount of a sleeping pill. The drug remains unnoticeable, but is enough to ensure that he is never fully awake. If the dose was too great, the effects would be too obvious, but the subtlety of this sweet control is what makes it the more deadly and Machiavellian. The exhibition proposes similarities between this domestic form of programmed anaesthesia and the more general lethargy created by the society of appetite, need and hypertechnology. When it comes to the texts in this catalogue, I am fortunate to have an all-star cast of writers: Antonio Barroso, Ramón Palomar, and the poet, Juan L. Bedins. Their writings strengthen and complete the selection of images, helping us to understand the exhibition and put this moment in my artistic career into context. Después del chocolate (“After Chocolate”) is the title of the painting exhibition on which Ana Vernia has worked intensely, demonstrating creativity, individuality and style as the most obvious features of her pictorial language. This general display of personality gifts the viewer with a suggestive offer of colour and gesture which shows the clear and emphatic power that Ana Vernia expresses in each of her pieces. The delicious and tasty title draws us in as easily as the scent of chocolate but, when we are observing the works, we quickly forget the addictive aroma in order to breathe in the pigments which glide over the canvas, like an icing of pure fresh air, and one for which we are truly grateful. Time and again this artist’s works repeat the personal symbolic elements that populate each canvas, this resource between the abstract and the figurative is loaded with messages so that dialogue becomes an interaction between the spectator and the work. Work which is intense and intimate, which tells us directly about events and emotions which help up to understand that there is more beyond the sensual and seductive taste of chocolate. The actors or “strange” beings we see in nearly all the paintings are the anonymous players who translate the dreams of the artist; we do not know whether this is an unconscious desire, but their projection onto the canvas displays a challenge to negativity, a thoughtful joke or the satisfaction of having got over some childhood trauma. An enveloping plastic result which brings you closer to the most instinctual fantasies of Ana Vernia, a choreography of intimacy and steadfast practice which serves to settle all the senses, like a poetic symphony between the past, present and future. A timeless read which brings together in the mystery of its shapes, in the chromatic nuances, in the fauna of its monsters, and in the trail of its messages, a rich cradle of ingredients which cook and complete the pictorial discourse as an indispensable example of its profession. Visually impassable landscapes projected by the subconscious, which juxtapose the large and small surfaces of the media in a dreamlike manner and with notable confidence, allow us to contemplate one of the most interesting offers in today’s market and which only Ana Vernia has been able to naturalize and dramatize from her own imaginary world. Después del chocolate (“After Chocolate”) invites you to enjoy exquisite work, to develop other theories, to get past the monsters of a particular and personal wonderland, to experience it as the artist herself wants. But, above all, it invites us to keep in the forefront of our minds the approximation of the subconscious as a journey through the world of art. These are sweet and chocolately times of political correctness and diverse regulations that restrict our choices and absorb us in a constant, ending stupor. We are surrounded by the nauseating because we are overrun by a tone which is lax and bland and like poisonous shellfish. The rage of punk is dead and people immerse themselves in their private bubbles to watch life from the screen of their mobile phone, their tablet, their computer, their television. People no longer seduce each other in bars but on social networks, webs of imposture which are the hive of the fraudster and the paradise of the cowardly voyeur. Against the docility and sheepishness of this dense silence, Ana Vernia rises up and rebels. And to this end, one suspects, she uses some clownish characters with barely a shadow of subtlety, attempted humans which stand out due to the power of their sharpened teeth which are the razors that should cause us to rebel, to wake up. When you contemplate Ana’s works, these prehistoric shark’s teeth, which contrast with little bodies which are an outline of concentrated strength, bite your eyes because that is their way of reminding you that you are still alive. Still alive, although you are running at your lowest ebb like the listless wandering of the zombies that eat fresh meat in the same way as others consume the useless junk that marks our throwaway existence. Teeth, teeth and more teeth. Teeth to destroy, shred, chew, scandalize. Teeth to break and scrape. Teeth from head-on and in profile. Teeth that deliver bites against the apathy of our neurons in hibernation. I once knew a guy who called himself “El Nene”. Short and rough, this was a man dedicated to illegal and nocturnal activities. “El Nene” fell in love with a large, black, voluptuous and liberal waitress who served drinks in an illegal after-hours bar where the shadiest elements used to get together. He fell hopelessly in love with this woman with wild tendencies and went to the bar in order to hopelessly lose his heart. Taking advantage of the anaesthetic effect of alcohol on his violent impulses, I asked him the reason for this unbridled passion. “Her teeth. Her shiny, fucking white teeth kill me and make me love her; I want her to eat me whole with those teeth…”. Teeth are the dark object of our most primitive desires. Ana Vernia knows this.
