It’s a Wonderful Life
Dear Friends,
to. I will love until my heart overflows and I will accept love from
anyone who offers it. I will dance and sing and sigh, and revel at
how beautiful it is to be alive. I will look around me and always
think, indeed, it’s a wonderful life!”
I write this as we prepare for another school year
at SJB, and as you read it we will already have
wrapped up our first few days of the 2014-2015
school year! Many of us have said how quickly the
summer seemed to fly by. Where does the time
go? It seems like we blink and another season or
phase of our lives has come to a close.
What an incredible outlook on life to have-one of love and joy, and
with God at the forefront of your heart and mind each day. I keep this
on my desk where I can see it multiple times a day as a reminder that
life is too short-and time goes by much too fast. While it’s often easier
said than done, it’s so important for us to take time out of our crazy
lives to stop and appreciate all that life has to offer-to recognize the
many ways that God has blessed us. To realize that even with the trials
that come our way, God is answering our prayers or leading us down
some path that we were meant for.
Our lives get so busy, and I often wonder if we really take the time to
take it all in-to appreciate all that we have and all that comes and goes
from our lives each day. So as I thought about this and I reflected on
the readings, I got to thinking about how we spend our time and how
much we value the things that we have and do here on earth. Are we
living our lives keeping God in our hearts and minds? As is stated in
Matthew’s gospel this week, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom
of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and
whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” As we’ve
learned through sacred scripture (and perhaps through our religion
classes as children for those of us who are products of Catholic school
or Religious Ed) the decisions we make on earth affect our friendship
with God as well as our friendships with others. While often times
we might be most concerned with making enough money to pay our
bills or having material things that we want-it’s the relationships that
we have that matter most when all is said and done. It’s recognizing all
there is to be grateful for, telling people we love them every day, and
using our gifts to helps others and be successful in whatever vocation
God has led us to. How do we spend the time God has given us here?
Are we negative? Do we complain? Or do we take each day as it
comes-with all of its challenges-and think of it as a blessing?
As this summer ends and another school year begins, it feels like
we get a clean slate-a fresh start. Perhaps this year for my fresh start
I’ll use these thoughts from Frances to guide my words and actionsin my work here at SJB, as a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and
pretty soon as a mom. I will be conscious of my priorities, spend
time with my family and loved ones when I can, and take in every
moment and appreciate each day and experience I have as much as I
can. I think that if we take these opportunities-these fresh starts-and
think about how we can make our lives even more joyful and allow
God into our hearts-our friendship with God (and others) will be
truly strengthened and we will live fuller and happier lives. As we
embark on this new school year and challenge ourselves to live with
even more grateful and loving hearts, please know that you are all in
my prayers-as I hope that SJB students, faculty, and staff are in yours.
Here’s to not wasting a single moment, and to recognizing that it is,
indeed, a wonderful life!
Many of you may have heard of the sad passing of one of our school
parents, Frances Canonizado, over the summer. At her funeral, on the
front of the worship aid was a quote by her. I’ve kept it on my desk
ever since, because I find it-and her-to be truly inspiring. These were
her resolutions: “I will not waste a single moment by stressing,
or dwelling on the negative. I will be constructive and positive
in how I approach bumps in the road. I will laugh at every
opportunity to do so; and I will cry if my heart tells me it needs

ONE WORD AT A TIME...
CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST
RENEW
During the month of August, the giving tree will remain in the
vestibule, but these ornaments will contain a different kind of wish:
the wish for an education. The education of its youth is a primary
mission of Catholic Parishes, so let us come together as a community
to support our parish school and religious education program. Gifts
can be returned in the collection basket, at the school or parish office
or via credit card at www.givecentral.org. There are several different
levels of sponsoring a child, and any gift you are able to give will
provide hope for the future for one of our many students who need
the financial help.
Life can wear us down. Our spirits can sag. We may feel caught in
habits—sometimes sinful ones—that erode our confidence and
hope. Our perspectives narrow and generosity becomes more and
more of a stretch for us. Come to me, Jesus says, all you who find life
wearisome and who carry heavy burdens. Come, he says to us today,
to the sacraments that renew you. Come to Penance, confess your
sins, and receive forgiveness. Be relieved of the burden and find the
courage and strength to live in a new way. Come to the Eucharist
and find in the absolutely generous self-sacrificing love of Jesus—
my body for you, my blood for you—a way to widen your love and
feed your generosity. The sacraments remember and make present
the saving work of Jesus.They also offer us a breathtaking map of our
renewed future that seemed to have eluded us.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME CATHOLIC?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is more commonly referred
to as RCIA. This journey is for adults who would like to be baptized,
receive first Holy Communion and be confirmed. The RCIA process
can also help you complete the necessary steps to become a member
of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in another Christian
denomination.
Revised Mass Schedule
Several weeks ago, the Liturgy Committee polled those who attend the
11:15am Mass about changing the start time of this Mass by 15 minutes.
This change will help with the congestion in both the parking spaces
and in the vestibule, will give the ministers and celebrants adequate
time to prepare, will allow for a more consistent Mass time (including
during Christmas and Holy Week), and will allow for more quiet time
for prayer prior to the start of Mass. The results of this survey were
overwhelmingly in favor of making this change.
RCIA meets three times per month from October until May, and the
sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil. The process of RCIA is a
journey of faith, led by the Holy Spirit. It is a time to tell stories, ask
questions, meet new friends and explore prayer and scripture.
If you are interested in finding out more about the RCIA, if you know
of anyone who might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are
willing to help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact Rita Kattner in
the rectory office.
Beginning on Sunday, September 7th, our final morning

Una Vida Maravillosa
Queridos Amigos,
Me reiré de cada oportunidad que tenga; y lloraré si mi corazón
me dice que lo necesita. Amaré hasta que mi corazón se desborde
y aceptaré el amor de cualquier persona que lo ofrezca. Bailaré y
cantaré y suspiraré, y revelaré lo hermoso que es estar vivo. Miraré
a mi alrededor y de hecho siempre pensaré ¡la vida es maravillosa!”
Escribo esto mientras que nos preparamos para otro
año escolar en SJB, y cuando usted lo lea ya habremos
pasado nuestros primeros días del año escolar 20142015. Muchos de nosotros hemos dicho que pareció
que el verano terminó muy rápido. ¿A dónde se va el
tiempo? Parece que parpadeamos y otra temporada o
fase de nuestra vida se acaba.
Es increíble tener esta perspectiva de la vida – una de amor y alegría y con
Dios en frente de nuestro corazón y mente todos los días. Guardo esto en
mi escritorio donde puedo verlo varias veces al día como un recordatorio
de que la vida es muy corta y el tiempo pasa demasiado rápido. A menudo
es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo, es muy importante que tomemos el
tiempo de nuestras ocupadas vidas para detenernos y apreciar todo lo que
la vida tiene por ofrecer, para reconocer las muchas maneras en que Dios
nos ha bendecido. Para darnos cuenta de que incluso con las pruebas que se
nos presentan, Dios está respondiendo a nuestras oraciones, o guiándonos
por algún camino al cual hemos sido asignados a seguir.
Nuestras vidas están tan ocupadas, y me pregunto a menudo si realmente
tomamos el tiempo para asimilar todo-para apreciar todo lo que tenemos
y todo lo que aparece y desaparece de nuestras vidas diariamente. Al
pensar en esto y reflexionar sobre las lecturas, me puse a pensar en cómo
pasamos nuestro tiempo y lo mucho que valoramos las cosas que tenemos
y hacemos aquí en la tierra. ¿Vivimos nuestras vidas manteniendo a Dios
en nuestros corazones y mentes? Como dice en el evangelio de Mateo
esta semana, “Yo te daré las llaves del Reino de los cielos. Todo lo que
ates en la tierra quedará atado en el cielo; y todo lo que desates en la
tierra quedará desatado en el cielo.” Como hemos aprendido en la Sagrada
Escritura (y quizás a través de nuestras clases de religión en nuestra
niñez, para todos aquellos de nosotros que somos producto de la escuela
católica o de Educación Religiosa) las decisiones que tomamos en la tierra
afectan nuestra relación con Dios, así como nuestras relaciones con los
demás. Algunas veces puede ser que estemos más preocupados en ganar
el suficiente dinero para pagar las cuentas o tener las cosas materiales
que deseamos –son las relaciones que tenemos las que importan más
cuando todo está dicho y hecho. Se trata de reconocer todo lo que hay que
agradecer, decirle a las personas que las queremos diariamente, y utilizar
nuestros dones para ayudar a los demás y tener éxito en la vocación a la
cual Dios nos ha guiado. ¿Cómo pasamos el tiempo que Dios nos ha dado
aquí? ¿Somos negativos? ¿Nos quejamos? ¿O tomamos cada día como
viene - con todos sus desafíos - y pensamos que es una bendición?
Al terminar este verano y al comenzar otro año escolar, se siente como
un borrón y cuenta nueva. Quizás este año para mi nuevo comienzo en
mi trabajo aquí en SJB, como esposa, hija, hermana, amiga y muy pronto
futura mama, utilizaré estos pensamientos de Frances para dirigir mis
palabras y acciones. Estaré consciente de mis prioridades, pasaré tiempo
con mi familia y seres queridos mientras pueda, disfrutaré de cada
momento y apreciaré diariamente todas las experiencias que tenga como
me sea posible. Creo que si tomamos estas oportunidades, estos nuevos
comienzos y pensamos en cómo podemos hacer que nuestras vidas sean
más alegres y permitir que Dios entre en nuestros corazones, nuestra
relación con Dios (y con los demás) será verdaderamente fortalecida y
viviremos plena y felizmente. Al comenzar este nuevo año escolar y nos
desafiamos a vivir aún más agradecidos y con corazones amorosos, por
favor sepan que todos ustedes están en mis oraciones, como espero que
los estudiantes de SJB, la facultad y el personal estén en las suyas. Así pues,
no hay que perder un solo momento, y reconocer que es, de hecho ¡una
vida maravillosa!
Muchos de ustedes pudieron haber oído del triste fallecimiento de una de
nuestras madres de la escuela, Frances Canonizado, durante el verano. En
su funeral, en el frente del misal de adoración se imprimió una cita. La
guardo en mi escritorio desde entonces, porque la encuentro – la cita y
a ella – verdaderamente inspiradoras. Estas fueron sus resoluciones: “No
perderé un solo momento tensionada, o morando en lo negativo. Seré
constructiva y positiva en la forma en que me tropiezo en el camino.

El Árbol de Dar permanecerá en el vestíbulo durante el mes de agosto,
estos adornos contienen un diferente tipo de deseo: el deseo de una
educación. La educación de la juventud es una misión principal de las
parroquias católicas, así que nos uniremos como una comunidad para
apoyar a nuestra escuela parroquial y al programa de Educación Religiosa.

Hay varios niveles diferentes de patrocinar a un niño, y cualquier regalo

De Palabra en Palabra...
¿LE GUSTARÍA SER CATÓLICO?
El Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos es comúnmente conocido
como RICA Este viaje es para los adultos que quisieran ser bautizados,
recibir la Primera Comunión y Confirmación. El proceso de RCIA puede
también ayudarle a completar los pasos necesarios para convertirse en
miembro de la Iglesia Católica si fueron bautizados en otra denominación
cristiana.
Horario de Misas Revisado
Hace varias semanas, el Comité de Liturgia hizo una encuesta a las
personas que asisten a la Misa de 11:15am sobre cambiar la hora de inicio
de esta Misa por 15 minutos. Este cambio ayudará con la congestión
tanto en el espacio de estacionamiento como en el vestíbulo, les dará a
los ministros y celebrantes tiempo suficiente para prepararse, permitirá
que las Misas comiencen y terminen a tiempo (incluyendo la temporada
de Navidad y Semana Santa), y permitirá más silencio durante el tiempo
de oración antes del inicio de la Misa. Los resultados de esta encuesta
fueron grandemente favorables para realizar este cambio.
RICA se reúne tres veces por mes a partir de octubre hasta mayo, y los

When a suicide takes place the world may take on an alien quality
for those who are left shaking in the aftermath, and restoration
of individual and family life entails change and re-examination
of our assumptions about living in the world that may not have
been questioned in the past. The loss propels the survivor into a
new, very personal transformation that can mightily challenge the
person emotionally, behaviorally, cognitively and spiritually. The
world has changed.
