Año de Misericordia
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Gospel graces us with a beautiful
prayer that can make every day of our lives a
jubilee of mercy: “O God, be merciful to me a
sinner” (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites
despised the tax collector who prayed it, for
collaborating with Gentile occupiers and
handling currency that bore the “divine”
emperor’s graven image. But the Pharisee’s
long-winded self-congratulation, mixed with
self-righteous condemnation, was no “prayer”
at all. “The Pharisee . . . spoke this prayer to
himself” (18:11, emphasis added). Praying
the tax collector’s simple, sincere, succinct
cry for mercy acknowledges our own
sinfulness, and “welcomes” other sinners as
brothers and sisters with whom we can
identify, even empathize, echoing Pope
Francis’ famous comment about not being
the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector
“went home justified” (18:14), that is, restored
to God’s friendship, for God’s mercy is not
prize achieved but gift received. “Let your
prayer be brief: for tax collector, prodigal son,
and dying thief were all reconciled to God by
a single phrase!” (Saint John Climacus, 7th
century).

31 Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
En el Evangelio del domingo pasado leímos
que el recaudador de impuestos hizo una
hermosa oración y nosotros la podemos rezar
este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. Y en el
Evangelio de hoy también leemos acerca de
otro recaudador de impuestos quien se
encuentra con Jesús y la historia ofrece una
misión difícil de comprender. Los conocidos
religiosos de Zaqueo consideraban a los
recaudadores de impuestos algo bajo y eran
despreciados social y espiritualmente; y luego la
altura de Zaqueo combinaba. Jesús responde a
ese juicio con misericordia. El pecado radical se
encuentra con la gracia inmerecida. Dios busca
y encuentra lo perdido; la casa de un pecador
se convierte en la casa de salvación. El pecador
“pronto” acepta la salvación “contento” (19:6),
mientras que los justos se quejan juiciosamente
de la misericordia de Dios. La misericordia tan
bien nos desafía a nosotros. Como a Zaqueo,
Jesús nos buscó y nos encontró, llamados por
nuestro nombre recibimos a Jesús en el hogar
de nuestro corazón. Por lo tanto, tenemos que
terminar este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
como “misioneros de misericordia”, buscando
con Jesús a nuestros compañeros pecadores,
recibiéndolos con alegría (ver 19:6) como
hermanas y hermanos queridos, y alegremente
ofreciéndoles nuestra hospitalidad sin ningún
juicio como la propia “bienvenida a casa” de
Jesús.

Teach your kids not to fear a predator’s
manipulation
Fear is a powerful motivator, and unfortunately, it
fuels the secrecy behind many instances of child
abuse. A predator will use fear to manipulate his or
her victims, making it hard to end the abuse. Often,
abuse victims are too scared or embarrassed to speak
up, especially if the abuser is someone they know.
Abusers can use close relationships to inspire fear of
retaliation and may also stress that no one will believe

All Souls Day Remembrance
All Souls day is November 2nd. We will have a special
altar for the faithful departed during the month of
November. If you would like to have the name of a
deceased loved one displayed, please register them in the
parish office. The donation per name is $15.00.
Additionally, All Souls day envelopes have been sent to
registered parishioners with their envelope packets.
Those envelopes will be placed in the altar table during
the month of November as we remember our beloved
departed in a special way.

El día de todos los Fieles Difuntos es el 2 de noviembre
y tendremos un altar especial para los fieles difuntos el
mes de noviembre. Si desea tener el nombre de un ser
querido fallecido recordado en el altar, por favor
