As your new principal, I am beaming with pride to be the leader of such a wonderful school community. I feel honored to be a part of a student centered school with so much dedication to student achievement on everyone’s part: the students, staff, parents, guardians, and volunteers. Thank you to all families that attended our back to school Open House in August. Seeing the smiles and excitement on our students’ faces as they walked in to school for the new year warmed my heart. It was truly a pleasure meeting all of you and your families. It has become evident to me that Roosevelt is a school that is rich in tradition and history, and I am happy to be a part of its legacy of educational excellence. We believe that bridging school and home is necessary. Therefore, Roosevelt staff welcomes your support and participation. Plus, we thank you in advance for choosing to be a part of your child’s education. With that said, I would like to encourage you to attend as many school sponsored events as possible, including our PTA sponsored Walk-A-Thon this Friday. The Walk-A-Thon is a fun family event and PTA fundraiser that brings our Roosevelt Community together for a positive cause. We hope to see you there this Friday, from 4:30 to 7. Please read all about it in the October PTA newsletter. Another important event in October are our parent/teacher conferences. Our goal is 100% attendance, so please remember to send back your conference notes with your preferred times. Conferences will take place on October 288h and 29h. Due to conferences, school will not be held on October 28, 29, and 30th. We look forward to meeting with you at your child’s conference. I have one friendly reminder for all adults that pick up and drop off our students before and after school. Please be mindful of our stop and drop policies and drive carefully around the perimeters of our school when bringing or picking up your children. The safety of all of our Roosevelt Roughriders matters to us all. If you have a question, concern, or compliment for staff, please feel free to call me at 743-7005. I have an open door policy and I’m happy to support our families in any way I can. Enjoy the beautiful Fall weather! Sincerely, Mrs. Hanna Beginner band students get started at Roosevelt School Dear Band Parents: The Roosevelt Elementary School beginner band for the 2015-2016 year has been formed. During the month of September, students saw instruments demonstrated, tried out several instruments of their choice, selected an instrument to play and are now meeting for their first lessons. Thank you, parents for encouraging participation, obtaining an instrument, and purchasing supplies. One of the most important aspects of successful participation in band is the element of practice. By taking a few minutes each night, students can reinforce the material learned in lessons and refine their skills. Students who practice regularly at home tend to get the most enjoyment out of playing an instrument. They look forward to rehearsals and performances and take a great deal of pride in performing to the best of their abilities. Remember, the skill of playing an instrument comes with the experience of using it. I look forward to working with this year’s group! Tom May Band Instructor Phone: 743-6441 email: [email protected] The Importance of the Yellow Passport Students are allowed a total of ten (10) “Parent Excused” absences per year. Once students have more than ten “Parent Excused” absences, the absences become truancies. Doctor excused absences do not count toward truancies or “Parent Excused” absences. Passports signed or stamped by medical office staff are documented as doctor excused. If a passport is written for a specific time, we ask that you wait until that time to allow the child to get to the office. We try hard not to interrupt classes if you come early. Please remember to have your Passport signed or stamped at your appointment and return it to the office as soon as you arrive back at school. If a Passport is not signed or stamped at the time of the appointment or if the Pass-port is misplaced, please call your doctor’s office and ask them to fax a doctor’s excuse to the Roosevelt School office at (608) 743-7010. Once a medical excuse is received, we can change the absence type from “Parent Excused” to “Doctor Excused. Music Notes: Music Teachers at Roosevelt School this year: Jessica May teaches Kindergarten and 1st grade classes every afternoon. She teaches at Adams School every morning. Cindy Riley teaches 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes every morning. She teaches at Jackson School every afternoon. We are both happy to be teaching Roosevelt students and look forward to another great year of music education. Music Classroom Activities: This year we will focus on our musical elements of Expression, Rhythm, Form, Melody, Timbre, Texture and Harmony. Many of our activities will include playing the music classroom instruments. Kindergarten and First Grade students have been busy working on Steady Beat and Reading Rhythms in music. Next we will focus on High & Low and Fast & Slow. Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade students have already begun reading music in their music textbooks and are learning so many new terms and symbols in music classes. Did you know that many of those terms are in Italian? It has been a great start to the year. Hopefully your children sing songs at home, or talk about some of our musical activities from class. Thank you for your support of music education for your son or daughter! 2015-16 Student Performances: We will be having spring student performances this year at Roosevelt School. Please watch for Coats for Kids through the Salvation Army is collecting winter wear for people at need in the Rock County Area. Coats, snowpants, boots and outerwear of all sizes, infant through adult, can be dropped off at any Janesville School District elementary school or other identified drop off location until Monday, October 12th. The Coats for Kids distribution will be held Saturday October 24th from 9-5:30 pm at the Salvation Army. Too Sick For School? One of the problems most often confronting parents of school-age children occurs when a child complains of not feeling well on a school day. A decision must be made as to whether the child stays home or goes to school. How do you make the right decision? The following guidelines are provided to assist you in making the decision as to when your child should stay home from school: Fever: A child with a temperature of 100 or over should not go to school and should be kept home until fever free for 24 hours without taking medication to control a fever. Diarrhea, vomiting: A child with diarrhea needs to stay home from school. A child who is vomiting needs to stay home from school. In both instances your child can return to school if they have not had diarrhea or vomiting in the last 12 hours and they have the energy or feel well enough to attend school. Cold, cough, sore throat: A child with a bad cough or bad cold symptoms should stay home even though there may not be a fever associated with the illness. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Roosevelt School nurse: Erin Kotthaus 743-7015 Medication Reminder Please make every effort to give medications at home. If medications must be taken at school, the following conditions must be met: Prescription Medications—A parent permission form and a physician permission form must be completed and kept on file at school. Over-the-counter Medications—A parent permission form must be completed and kept on file at school. The school office must be notified immediately of students with a food or bee sting allergy or any life threatening condition, so arrangements can be made to provide proper care to the student if needed. Breakfast Club is FREE for all Roosevelt Students Breakfast is offered in the cafeteria daily from 7:45—8:05am. Please enter through door #8. The Breakfast Club is supervised by Roosevelt staff members but we are always looking for additional adult help during breakfast hours. If you are interested in helping please contact the office at 743-7000. NO DOGS ALLOWED City ordinance forbids dogs, cats and other animals from being on playgrounds or school grounds at any time. Thank you! Orchestra Newsletter - Mrs. Banwell WELCOME TO ORCHESTRA The new school year is launched and we will be experiencing the joy of making music. Thank you for your support and particularly for encouraging your child to be in orchestra. Throughout the year you will be receiving communications from orchestra concerning concerts and other pertinent information. This year I will be at the following schools: Marshall, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe and Roosevelt . If you need to reach me please email, rbanwell@janesville,k12,wi,us or call: 743-6193 and leave me a message. I am working on a Orchestra Web Page and will send information when it is up and running. Mark your calendar for these concerts. WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 9TH 7:00 P.M. MARSHALL GYM. THURSDAY MARCH 31ST 7:30 P.M. CRAIG HIGH SCHOOL, WEDNESDAY MAY 18TH 7:00 P.M. MARSHALL GYM. This is each student’s finale exam. I will be sending home other notes if there will be other orchestra events. Remember that competence is the result of dedicated “Time on task”. Music learning, music performance, and music appreciation are the outcomes of study, practice and guided listening. With limited rehearsal time, it is imperative that students invest extra time in nurturing their talents and improving their skills. Please encourage a positive practice schedule. Remember that practice time must be framed as a benefit and not as a disciplinary penalty. Orchestra also receives a grade on the student’s report card. I look forward to visiting with you in the near future. Mrs. Banwell Orchestra Director (608)743-6193 Quote: “Don’t only practice your art. But force your way into its secrets. For it and knowledge can raise you upward.” Beethoven Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced price meals. 15-16 School Lunch Prices Milk $ .35 Lunch-Student $2.25 Reduced Lunch $ .40 Lunch-Adult $3.75 We want to encourage all of our Roosevelt families to consider completing a Free and Reduced School Meal Family Application. Your eligibility status may qualify you for other assistance and will qualify the school district for more program funds. You can find the application on line at www.janesville.k12.wi.us or you may pick one up at the Roosevelt office. As always, if you have questions or concerns regarding the application, or the process, please call. We can help you complete the application and find answers to any questions you may have. Roosevelt School 743-7000 Battle of the Books Roosevelt's 4th and 5th grade Battle of the Books teams are forming now! We have 12 teams already, but there is still time for more! Students that are interested should pick up a packet of information from Ms. Ulring, join a team of three other students that love to read, and then get to work reading. It's a great way to learn and have fun with your classmates too! K-Kids is a youth service club sponsored by the Noon Kiwanis of Janesville. It is open to all 4 th and 5thGraders who demonstrate respect and responsibility at school. K-Kids had their first meeting on Thursday, October 1st. We are very excited to have over 30 returning members and are looking forward to having new members join us this week. It was decided by the group to support ECHO for our first project. Look for a note about our mac n cheese collection coming soon. Shelley Lemirande New and Friendly Reminders for Morning Drop Off: 1. There is no supervision on the playground until 8:05; therefore, students should NOT be dropped off at school unless they are reporting to breakfast club. 2. Breakfast club begins at 7:45 a.m. Any student arriving at school before 7:45 a.m. is arriving too early. Students will not be dismissed from breakfast club until 8:05 when outside supervision begins. 3. Students who bring footballs and balls to school must keep them in their backpack for use during lunch recess. For safety reasons, balls will no longer be allowed on the playground during the morning. 4. For safety reasons, Kindergarten students who arrive between 8:05 and 8:15 will now report to the Kindergarten playground by the stop and drop or line up. Tthey will continue to line up in the same area as usual. Weather Procedures A reminder to our families about weather related closings and delays notification: Infinite Campus Messenger system will serve as our primary means of notification. We urge you to supply your student’s school with your contact information and updates as changes occur. WCLO and additional radio and TV stations will be contacted regarding school closings or delays. Closing and delay information will be posted no later than 6:00 a.m. Decisions on cancellation of school are made in coordination with both the Janesville Transit System and Van Galder Bus Company. They are also based on the passage of city streets, safety of rural students, and information from the county highway and city street departments. The final decision to delay or close rests with Superintendent, Karen Schulte. Parents always have the option of keeping their child home due to inclement weather. Your child will receive a principal excused absence. You must call your school to report your decision to keep your child home. The Superintendent also continues to have the option of delaying the start of school by one hour. Elementary School classes will begin at 9:20 a.m. and middle and high school classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. Special education and early childhood classes will also report at 9:20 a.m. Elementary breakfast clubs will not serve meals when school has been delayed. Schools do not close early to avoid incoming snow or ice storms. This policy is to protect children who may get home before their parents and have no access or supervision at home. There will be no athletic contests and practices on days school is called off for weather reasons. The gyms will be closed. On days when school is in session, but weather has progressively gotten worse, cancellations for after school or evening athletics or extracurricular activities will be announced by 2:00 p.m. Infinite Campus Updates All families should be sure to update information in Infinite Campus as it changes. Primary guardians are responsible to change information in Family Access; the district does not make these changes. Address changes and name changes are the only changes that must be made through the school office. Have you added all emergency contacts? Make sure you have updated telephone numbers. Messenger uses the telephone numbers provided from here. Please include your email address to receive email notifications. Remember to go to the School District of Janesville’s or Roosevelt's website, click on the tab for Infinite Campus. If you do not have your login and password, contact the Roosevelt office for your login and password. If you have problems, you may stop in the school office and a staff member will help you on the computer in the library. Welcome Back Roosevelt Families! Never leave your car parked at the curb. If you need to park, please pull into one of the parking stalls. Stay in the car and drop off or pick up your child as close to the curb (on the curb side) as possible. Pull as far forward as possible. 2. Approach the Stop-n-Drop from the north so you don’t need to cross a line of traffic; instead, you will just follow along the curb and turn right into the Stop-n-Drop. There is no left turn into or out of the Stop-nDrop zone. 3. Never ask your child to walk in front of the line of cars to get to a parking place or to your car. 4. Please do not double park. 5. Parking is allowed only south of Josephine Street and on the east side of Ringold Street. On Josephine and Holmes Streets you can park west of the signs only. Holmes Street is very narrow, so parking is not allowed when St. Paul’s and Roosevelt are dismissing students. Follow the directions on the signs. 6. Students and adults must cross only at crosswalks, not in the middle of the street. Drivers, please stop at the crosswalks to let pedestrians cross the street. 7. Please use caution and allow just a little extra time when dropping off and picking up students and things will The entire school side of Ringold St. is a Stop, Drop, and Go area as part of the Stop-n-Drop driveway. There is a sign noting this in the front of the building. Please note that at the bottom of the sign it states “No Unattended Vehicles.” In other words, you may wait on Ringold Street as long as you stay in your car and are ready to move forward if the cars ahead of you pull forward into the Stop-n-Drop driveway. This means you cannot exit your vehicle to take a child to the front doors, or drop something off quickly in the office, etc. The Police Department has ticketed parents and continues to randomly patrol these violations. If you are out of your vehicle and it is parked in the front of the school building during school hours you can be ticketed. Bus Loading Zones Directly in front of the school at exit 11 is the bus loading zone. Do not park or wait in that area. There is no parking between the posted signs. PBIS: Positive Behavior Interventions and Support All Roosevelt students participated in a fun-filled PBIS kick-off assembly on September 4th. Staff members acted out skits to reinforce the Roosevelt RULES. All of the students were excited to see Teddy make an appearance. We also practiced our Roosevelt RULES rap, while Teddy danced along. What a fun way to learn our rules!W Roosevelt School Welcomes Title 1 Program! Roosevelt Elementary is fortunate to receive Title 1 funding and services this year! We are designated a Schoolwide Title 1 School. This means that all students in the building can benefit from the extra staff services and materials that are available with Title 1 funding! A reading teacher and instructional aides have been added to the staff to help boost student achievement. Additional money for educational materials and resources to enhance instruction is another benefit of a schoolwide program. We are excited to be able to expand services and increase quality instructional materials that will contribute to a positive educational experience for your children! As a reminder, each grade level offers an optional milk break each day. Parents can opt to purchase milk each trimester for their child . Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch do receive milk during milk break at no charge. Parents do have the option of sending in a snack for their child to eat during milk break, but sending in a snack is not required. Snacks are not provided by the school for students. If your child does not bring a snack to school, we will take this to mean that you do not want your child to have a snack that day since you did not send one in. If you do choose to send a snack with your child, we ask that it is something healthy, such as a granola bar or piece of fruit, rather than something unhealthy, such as cookies or a bag of chips. If you have questions about milk break, or if providing a daily snack for your child is a financial hardship for your family, please speak with your child’s teacher so that we can assist you.
