Today’s Gospel Reflection
1st Reading: Ez 2:2-5 * Psalm 123:1-4 *
2nd Reading: 2 Cor 12:7-10 * Gospel: Mk 6:1-6a
FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST
Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are
astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and
worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have
no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any
fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark’s
passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human
part of Jesus’ two‑fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of
Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that he is
in the midst of his own family members there. From the very
people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day
of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson
to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the
greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the
least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are
Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and
for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and
be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he?
Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence?

Dear Parishioners and friends,
PASTORS’ MESSAGE
Thank you for your generous support of our Holy Father’s charitable works in the Peter’s Pence
Collection. Your contributions will be combined with those of our brothers and sisters around the world to
help Pope Francis provide essential relief to people in need. Your generosity is an act of solidarity with
the universal Church, answering the call to be a witness of charity. May God bless you.
***********************************************************************

Are you a registered parishioner? If you are not yet a registered parishioner of St. Michael, I invite
you to do so now. To be a registered parishioner is to belong to a community that is called a parish. We
can better serve you when you are a registered parishioner. You will be able to claim your donations to
the church towards your income tax returns at the end of the year. There may come a time when you
may need character reference or certification of good moral character. You will also need proof that you
are a registered parishioner when your child or a family member will receive the sacraments of baptism,
first communion, confirmation, marriage, etc., or when you are asked to be a godparent or sponsor. You
may find a registration form on Page 6 of this bulletin, or come to the parish office.

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 05, 2015
Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community!
May God bless you on this 4th of July weekend. In celebration, I offer you this
prayer:
Lord, we stand today as our forefathers have stood before You in times gone by
celebrating our history and reveling in all the great things that our country has
achieved. On this day, we rejoice in the favor You have graciously given us. We thank You for the blessings of liberty, for this
generation and for the generations to come. We thank You for our independence, peace and for all those who have bravely
given their lives in the defense of freedom and justice. We thank You that Your gracious and provident hand has given us so
much. Amen.
Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school.
Call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. Give us an opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s Catholic
education can fit into your budget. Call 619 470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis @ [email protected]. Fr. Manny
offers a $1000 discount to new families enrolling in the Academy.
Yours in Christ,
St. Michael Preschool
Religious Education
We are accepting
Peace! In a couple of weeks registration for the parish school of
religion will begin and will run through August. I would like to
take this opportunity to encourage our parishioners to help get
the word out regarding the parish religious program. In the past
few months while interviewing young families who are asking for
baptism for their infant children I have become aware that there
are many school age children out there who have never been in
a religious education program. The main reason is that parents
do not know about what our parish offers. They do not know
because most of them do not attend Church on a regular basis.
Many of them need catechesis themselves, and do not
understand what they have promised to God when they baptized
their older children. Most of these parents have asked for
baptism from St. Michael because someone they know had
recommended it to them, or simply because we are the closest
Church to them.
There are over 3,000 families registered in the parish, many of
whom have acquaintances, friends and even relatives with
school age children who ought to be in the religious education
program. Surely these families can get the word out regarding
this very important parish resource.
The work of evangelization is the responsibility of every baptized
person. It is our calling to do this, it is not an option. Pope
Francis in his exhortation “Joy of the Gospel” calls all of us to
serve the poor without discrimination. He adds that the greatest
discrimination of all is the lack of spiritual care. Please take this
exhortation to heart and reach out to your neighbors and friends
and tell them about the parish religious education program.
Thank you.

Prayer for the Year of
Consecrated Life
O God, throughout the ages you have
called women and men to pursue lives of
Saint Michael the Archangel,
perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty,
defend us in battle. Be our
chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated
Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of protection against the wickedness
Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives and the snares of the devil. May God
teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do
you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host
daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure - by the Divine Power of God - cast
the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits,
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the
who roam throughout the world
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
