All of us, members of our beloved “Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Parish” are now involved in a major effort to raise $800,000 for an urgent repair of
our Church’s tower, which is seriously damaged. We invite everyone in our Parish
community to please make a pledge for this campaign now by calling Ms. Faria
Sookdeo at the Rectory: 718-739-0241. The name of this Capital Campaign is
“Generations of Faith” because we belong to an uninterrupted chain of generations
of people and families that have been witnessing the Catholic faith in our Parish
since its foundation, 130 years ago. That’s why, in addition to the tower repair, we
will dedicate some of the funds we raise to help the Senior Priests of our diocese
(who need our helping hand) and the youth, who are getting ready to keep the flame

Santísima Virgen María” estamos ahora envueltos en un gran esfuerzo conjunto

Sunday, March 13 , 2016 – V Sunday of Lent (Cycle C)
WE ALL ARE LIKE THE ADULTERESS WOMAN… AND
THE LORD FORGIVES US SO THAT WE SIN NO MORE…
the arrogance of old reasserts itself. They had sought to
lower the woman to the dust by stoning her. Now that they
have been humbled by Jesus, will they accept his words and
recognise them as the gift of eternal life, or reject them and
condemn themselves to the dust?
My dear sisters and brothers:
Today I would like to share with you the reflections of Friar
David Goodill, OP (Oxford, Great Britain) about the
message of the Word of God on this Sunday:
Researchers have recently discovered that honesty makes
for good relationships. If you are honest and objective about
yourself, you will tend to have more success in relationships
than those who are false and deluded. I hope that these
findings will come as no great surprise to you. Humility and
honesty are key virtues in sustaining any relationship, and in
particular those which are most intimate and loving. Lack of
self-awareness can result either from our having too
elevated an opinion of ourselves, or from low self-esteem. In
both cases we are unable to esteem our own true worth. We
are also unable to judge others with any degree of
objectivity; the proud see others as beneath them and the
dejected have their eyes fixed on the ground, unable to look
up for fear they may offend. In today's Gospel a woman
caught in adultery is brought to Jesus by the Scribes and
Pharisees. In their pride and arrogance they look down upon
this women. She is contemptible, they see her as nothing, a
life to be thrown away in their war against Jesus. They stand
over the woman, judging and condemning from their position
of moral superiority.
Although at first Jesus does not directly engage with them,
his act of bending down is a symbolic act of humility,
reminding them of the humility they lack. His action of writing
in the dust has been interpreted in various ways, but
perhaps it is a second symbolic act of humility. Through his
word God created us from the dust of the earth. Jesus writes
in the dust to remind the scribes and pharisees that they are
nothing without the creative and redeeming power of God's
Word. Through his actions Christ has show the Scribes and
the Pharisees the truth about themselves, but they fail to
understand. Now his words bring that reluctant truth home. It
is the eldest who first react, for they are closer to the reality
of mortality and the judgement of God.
Whereas the Scribes and the Pharisees have looked down
upon the woman, Jesus after addressing them bends down
again, and it is from this lowly position that he addresses the
woman. Jesus Christ chooses to lower himself so that he
can look up to those who are lowly. His lowering here is a
further symbolic act. On the Cross he will be brought to the
very depths of indignity, so that looking up to his Heavenly
Father he will raise all those who repent of their sins. The
woman has committed a serious sin, but Jesus does not
condemn her; rather his loving mercy brings the possibility of
new life, 'go away, and don't sin any more.' He will lower
himself upon the Cross, not to condemn the world but to
bring new life. In contrast to the woman, whom Jesus
commands to go and sin no longer, the Scribes and the
Pharisees are given no such promise of new life. For the
moment Jesus has brought them low. It is not clear,
however, that this lowering is a permanent lesson or merely
an annoying episode. Perhaps for some it will be a changing
point in their lives. For others it may soon forgotten before

Young people who are in 6-8th grade are invited to our
Junior High Youth Group!
Every Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. we will be having a weekly youth group
for young people from 6-8th grade in St. Mike’s Room. The evening will
include games, snacks, music, and most importantly prayer! We highly
encourage parents to take their kids!

TODOS SOMOS COMO LA MUJER ADÚLTERA… Y EL SEÑOR
NOS PERDONA PARA QUE NO PEQUEMOS MÁS…
esa comunión y fidelidad que es la fuente de la verdadera
felicidad. Hoy como ayer esta actitud liberadora de Jesús
sigue teniendo vigencia. Una liberación que llega al corazón
de los hombres y mujeres. El proyecto de Dios sólo
pretende que los hombres sean realmente felices. Lucas ha
comprendido la misericordia de un modo especial.
Mis queridas hermanas y mis queridos hermanos:
Hoy vamos a compartir las reflexiones de Fray Gerardo
Sánchez Mielgo, O.P. (Valencia, España), sobre el mensaje
de la Palabra de Dios en este Domingo:
Precisamente por tratarse de un texto de sabor
indiscutiblemente lucano, hay que interpretarlo a la luz de la
teología lucana. De modo general encaja perfectamente con
otros fragmentos de Lucas pero, sobre todo, con su talante
que consiste en proclamar, ante todo, la misericordia, el
perdón de Dios y la cercanía a los pecadores. Sólo porque
el perdón de Dios se ha hecho vivo en Jesús es posible la
esperanza para quienes vivían despreciados y marginados
en el pueblo de Israel. Los pecadores se sentían muy cerca
de Jesús. Pero precisamente esta cercanía y comunión con
ellos era un motivo fuerte de persecución contra Jesús que
le conduce a la muerte. El relato pretende situar frente a
frente a los «piadosos» que se remiten a la Ley de Moisés
(rabinos y fariseos) y a Jesús, declarado amigo de los
pecadores.
La
presentación
dramática
ha
sido
cuidadosamente buscada: se trata de una adúltera, delito
particularmente tipificado en la ley. La pena era la
lapidación.
¿Nadie te ha condenado? Pues yo tampoco, porque he
venido para llamar a los pecadores a penitencia. Pero no es
un gesto contra la ley, sino por encima de la ley y ofreciendo
una interpretación auténtica de la ley como expresión de la
voluntad de su Padre (Mt 5,17). La misericordia está por
encima. No se trata de un quebrantamiento de la ley. Como
tampoco la quebrantó Jesús cuando se dirige al Padre para
que perdone a quienes le han condenado porque no sabían
lo que hacían. Históricamente este asunto era
especialmente delicado. Jesús lo resolvió de manera
sapiencial y definitiva. No aprueba la conducta de la mujer,
ya que Jesús sigue manteniendo como válidos los
mandamientos de la ley de Dios recogidos y transmitidos en
el Antiguo Testamento. El adulterio no es el camino para
conseguir la felicidad. Dios tiene otro plan sobre el
matrimonio como comunidad de vida y de amor que expresa
visiblemente la comunidad de vida y de amor que se realiza
en la intimidad de su misterio. La fidelidad a esa comunidad
de vida y de amor refleja la fidelidad infinita de las tres
personas divinas. Dios promulgó los mandamientos para
que el hombre y las mujeres fueran libres, felices y en
comunión de vida. La ternura entre los hombres y mujeres
comprometidos con el vínculo sagrado del matrimonio
reflejan la ternura de los tres en el seno de la divinidad. Por
eso no se puede romper ni suspender entre los hombres
porque tampoco cesa ni se suspende en el seno de la
divinidad. Pero aquella mujer había sido víctima de su
debilidad. Jesús mantiene los principios, pero es
misericordioso con los que los quebrantan siempre que
exista en ellos una voluntad decidida y manifestada, en el
futuro, a tomar otro camino, a restaurar la comunión perdida,
a hacer posible la fidelidad quebrantada. Jesús es obediente
a la voluntad de su Padre y, a la vez, misericordioso con los
hombres. Restaura esa voluntad en el corazón humano. Yo
tampoco te condeno, declara Jesús, pero en adelante cuida

estudiantes que están en “high school”. Nos reunimos todos los domingos
de 2:30 hasta 4:30 p.m. en el salón de St. Mike’s.

Todos los viernes vamos a tener un grupo para jóvenes de sexto a octavo
