Message from the Pastor
Dear friends,
I thought if the Posadas procession would begin
on December 16th with a few pilgrims, Mary and Joseph
would not be alone and we could begin with a reflection
about “hospitality.” I should never have worried. Already by the starting time at 6 PM, 150 people had gathered. In fact, by the end of the hour long walk around a
few blocks of our Back of the Yards neighborhood, 350
people joined in singing the traditional Posadas song.
We entered into the hall, where the kids were
greeted by a Santa Claus, a record number of piñatas to
break, and offered food and drink. I was amazed as the
mothers of the Children’s Choir had enough tostadas,
hot dogs, and posole to serve everyone. A special raffle
was held of 36 turkeys and 12 hams. Turkeys were donated by Maple Pointe Apartments, the company of Ranferi Hernandez, which came from Secretary of State Jesse
White, and additional turkeys and hams were donated
by State Senator Mattie Hunter. Parents were very appreciative and the gifts were timely. As the kids broke the
piñatas, Fr. Hector played Christmas songs over a stereo
system. The atmosphere was festive and families sat and
talked with one another. At the end of the whole celebration, children were given bags of peanuts and candy
as they departed the hall.
The Posadas was a wonderful gathering of people, having fun, celebrating and remembering the tradition of Mary and Joseph looking for a place where the
light of the world might be given birth. So many people
made donations and helped prepare each evening. Indeed, the light is born amongst us with their giving! I
imagined all the children who participated in Posadas
returning home each evening, exhausted perhaps, but
filled with a positive safe memory of being cared for by
our adults. I think this is what gives kids hope when confronted with the darkness of night. Memory is a powerful medicine when in need.
Even amidst the economic poverty, and the lack
of jobs, the stress of overcrowding, the light of Christ is
among our people, as we value the friendship and service
to our children and families.
May the New Year be filled with many more
such memories. Thank you to all who made our Posadas
memorable and wonderful. Thank you for your giving
and love. A happy and blessed new year!

Queridos amigos y queridas amigas,
Creí que el 16 de diciembre, cuando comenzásemos
con la procesión de las Posadas habría muy poca gente pero
que al menos María y José no se sentirían solos y podríamos
empezar con una reflexión sobre la hospitalidad. Me equivoqué de medio a medio. Poco antes de la hora fijada para el
comienzo de la procesión, había ya unas 150 personas. De
hecho, para el final de la procesión en torno a unas pocas
cuadras de nuestro barrio, eran ya más de 350 personas las
que coreaban con entusiasmo el tradicional canto de las Posadas.
Entramos en el hall. Allí los niños fueron saludados
por Santa Claus, había muchas piñatas para romper y se
ofrecía comida y bebida. Me sorprendí al ver que las madres
del coro de los niños habían sido capaces de preparar suficientes tostadas, perritos claientes y pozole para toda aquella gente. Se celebró una rifa especial que tenía como premio
36 pavos y 12 jamones. Unos pavos fueron donados por Maple Pointe Apartments, la compañía de Ranferi Hernández y
por el secretario de Estado Jesse Chite. El resto de los pavos y los jamones vinieron del senador estatal Mattie Hunter.
Las familias lo agradecieron y esos regalos fueron muy buenos. Mientras que los niños se enfrentaban a las piñatas, el
padre Héctor hacía funcionar el sistema de sonido para que
se oyeran cantos de Navidad. Se sentía que estába-mos de
fiesta y las familias se sentaron y comenzaron a charlar unos
con otros. Al final de la celebración, los niños recibieron bolsas de cacahuetes y caramelos.
Las Posadas fueron una celebración muy especial
para la gente, nos divertimos, celebramos y recordamos la
historia de María y José buscando un lugar donde poder dar
a luz al que es la luz del mundo. Muchas personas aportaron
sus donativos y ayudaron a preparar la celebración de cada
tarde. ¡La Luz ha nacido entre nosotros con su entrega! Pienso en todos los niños que volvían a su casa después de la
celebración quizá muy cansados pero también con el sentimiento de que los mayores habían cuidado de ellos con cariño y amor. Creo que eso es lo que hace que los niños tengan esperanza cuando les toque enfrentarse con momen-tos
de oscuridad. Esos recuerdos son una medicina muy especial cuando estamos en dificultades.
Incluso en medio de la crisis económica, de la falta
de trabajo, del hacinamiento en las casas, la luz de Cristo
está entre nosotros cuando valoramos de verdad la amistad
y la atención a nuestros niños y a las familias.
Que el nuevo año esté lleno de buenos recuerdos
como estos. Gracias a todos los que han hecho posible que
estas maravillosas Posadas sean dignas de recordarse. Gracias a todos por su entrega y amor. Les deseo un año nuevo
lleno de felicidad y bendiciones.
