EASTER SEASON: A TIME OF MYSTAGOGIA (IV)
CONFIRMATION: THE HOLY SPIRT GIVEN ‘WITHOUT MEASURE’ (JN 3:34)
TEMPORADA DE PASCUA: UN TIEMPO DE MISTAGÓGICA (IV)
CONFIRMACIÓN: EL ESPÍRITU SANTO DADO 'SIN MEDIDA' (JUAN 3:34)
In our meditation on our faith during this Easter season we have
taken time to look at the Sacrament of Eucharist, the Sacrament of
Baptism, and the sacramental of Baptism in the Holy Spirt. Let us now
turn to what may be called the least understood, or maybe better the most
misunderstood sacrament, the second Sacrament of Initiation,
Confirmation.
‘From the time of the apostles [the Church] imparted on the
newly baptized by the laying on of the hands the gift of the Spirt that
completes the grace of Baptism (CCC 1288), in fact the Letter to the
Hebrews sets Baptism and the laying on of the hands as the first elements
of Christian initiation. Very early in Christian tradition this ‘laying on of
the hands’ was better signified by the anointing with perfumed oil
(chrism) which ultimately highlights the name ‘Christian’
which means ‘anointed’ and derives from the baptism of
Jesus who is anointed by the Holy Spirit. This rite of
anointing continues today in the Eastern Churches as
Chrismation and in the Western Churches as Confirmation,
suggesting a ratification of Baptism and a completion of
Christian initiation. It strengthens the baptismal graces
which are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. (CCC 1289)
In the early centuries the celebration of Baptism
and Confirmation generally comprised a single celebration,
a kind of double sacrament according to St. Cyprian,
followed by the reception of Eucharist, all celebrated by the
Bishop. However, as the number of infant baptisms grew it
prevented the Bishop from being present at all baptismal
ceremonies, facilitating the development of the practice of a first
anointing at baptisms which was completed by a second anointing, a later
date, by the Bishop. For infant baptism this remains the custom as the
newly baptized child is anointed signifying the participation of the one
being baptized into the prophetic, priestly, and kingly offices of Christ
and then later the sealing of this office by the anointing by the Bishop.
For adults entering into the Church (remember the Easter Vigil or the
initiations celebrate the weekends of the Third and Fourth Sundays of
Easter) there is but a single anointing, administered by the celebrant of
baptism, sealing the baptismal offices. (CCC 1290, 1291)
This separation has led many to mistakenly conclude that
Confirmation was somehow rite of passage as an adult Christian, this is
particularly the case since the age of Confirmation for those baptized as
infants has moved to the teenage years and is preceded by the reception of
Eucharist at around 7 years of age (the Canonical age of reason). But if
we look at the Rite of Confirmation we find, not a rite of passage, but
rather a fulfilment of the triple office received in baptism. The Bishop
explains the mystery of confirmation by reminding the people of the
events of Pentecost and the apostles receiving the power of the Spirit
completing the work of baptism and they began to speak in the language
of prophetic works. Through the completion of their baptisms, the gifts of
the Holy Spirit will make them more Christ like and more perfect
members of the Church, becoming more active members of the Body of
Christ under the guidance of the Holy Spirit living life completely in
service of all.
After renewing the baptismal promises (creed) he continues by
saying that in baptism we are given new birth as children of God and now
God pours out the Holy Spirt with the gifts of wisdom, understanding,
right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder and awe in
the presence of God. Those being confirmed are then sealed with the oil
of Chrism deepening the baptismal grace, perfecting the common
priesthood, and confirming the power to profess faith in Christ publicly
and to ‘officially’ enter into the ministerial life of the Church. (CCC
1309)
Confirmation, therefore, is not a rite of passage, it is not the
completion of our sacramental life, rather it is the perfection of the
Baptismal grace rooting us as loving children of God, strengthening our
bond with the Church, and associating us more closely with the mission of
Christ. It imparts to us the character to be more Christ like in our words
and deeds.
Sealed with the Holy Spirit we can live more fully, sanctifying
our world, proclaiming the kingdom of God here and now, and
courageously being servant leaders in all of our communities.

Mercy in the Home:
The Corporal Works of Mommy and Daddy
By Dr. Gregory K. Popcak
Feed the hungry: Family members truly bless one another when they create a nurturing place around the
dinner table for communion and conversation to occur and when they take time to plan nourishing, heartwarming
meals.
Give drink to the thirsty: What parent hasn’t been asked to get a thirsty child a drink in the middle of the
night? Getting
up and serving that child cheerfully with compassion is a wok of mercy that reminds the child
that his or her needs are important.
Clothe the naked: Finding the grace to be patient while dealing with a toddler who only wants to wear the
blue shirt or helping a teen dress attractively, yet modestly, isn’t just an exercise in patience, it’s an opportunity to
help your children remember their worth in God’s eyes!
