Dental Are You at Risk for Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria that collect on teeth and in the space between the tooth and the gum. If left untreated, periodontal disease results in the destruction of the bone that supports the teeth. It is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. The following questions may help you determine if you are at higher risk for periodontal disease: POINTS Do you have diabetes that requires you to take insulin? If YES, circle 20 Do you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day? If YES, circle 20 Do you have diabetes but are not required to take insulin? If YES, circle 10 If you have been treated for periodontal disease, do you return to the dentist as often as recommended? If NO, circle 10 Have you lost a tooth in the last three years due to periodontal disease? If YES, circle 9 Do you have your teeth cleaned at least once a year by a dentist or a dental hygienist? If NO, circle 7 Do you brush your teeth at least once a day? If NO, circle 4 Do you clean between your teeth with dental floss or an interproximal brush at least once a day? If NO, circle 4 Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth? If YES, circle 4 Are you over 50 years old? If YES, circle 4 Do your gums hurt when you brush or floss your teeth? If YES, circle 3 Have you noticed your gums receding (shrinking)? If YES, circle 3 Do sensitive teeth keep you from brushing as often as you’d like? If YES, circle 2 Now, total up your points You should see your dentist and discuss your self-assessment. If your score is 15 points or more you may be at higher risk for developing periodontal disease. An effective way to help prevent periodontal disease is to brush and floss daily, to stop smoking, and to have regular professional cleanings and periodic evaluations by your dentist. La enfermedad periodontal (enfermedad de las encías) es causada por bacteria que se acumula en los dientes y en el espacio entre el diente y las encías. Si no es tratada, la enfermedad periodontal resulta en la destrucción del hueso que sostiene los dientes. Esta es la causa principal de la perdida de los dientes en los adultos. Las siguientes preguntas le ayudaran a determinar si usted esta en riesgo de tener una enfermedad periodontal (enfermedad de las encías): PUNTOS ¿Tiene usted el tipo de diabetes la cual requiere que usted tome insulina? Si contesta SÍ, circule 20 ¿Fuma usted mas de 10 cigarros al día? Si contesta SÍ, circule 20 ¿Tiene usted el tipo de diabetes la cual no requiere que usted tome insulina? Si contesta SÍ, circule 10 ¿Si usted ha sido tratado por una enfermedad de las encías (periodontal), ha regresado al dentista como ha sido recomendado? Si contesta NO, circule 10 ¿Ha usted perdido un diente en los últimos 3 años debido a una enfermedad periodontal (de las encías)? Si contesta SÍ, circule 9 ¿Va usted al dentista o higienista para que le limpien los dientes por lo menos una vez al año? Si contesta NO, circule 7 ¿Se lava (cepilla) usted los dientes por lo menos una vez al día? Si contesta NO, circule 4 ¿Se limpia entre los dientes con hilo dental o con un cepillo que limpia entre los dientes por lo menos una vez al día? Si contesta NO, circule 4 ¿Sangran sus encías cuando usted se cepilla los dientes o usa el hilo dental? Si contesta SÍ, circule 4 ¿Tiene usted mas de 50 años? Si contesta SÍ, circule 4 ¿Le duelen sus encías mientras se cepilla los dientes o cuando usa el hilo dental? Si contesta SÍ, circule 3 ¿Ha observado que sus encías se han estado encogiendo o disminuyendo? Si contesta SÍ, circule 3 ¿Los dientes sensibles le impiden cepillarse con la frecuencia que usted desea? Si contesta SÍ, circule 2 Ahora, sume el total de sus puntos Usted debería analizar sus resultados con su dentista. Si su puntaje total es de 15 puntos o mas, usted puede estar en alto riesgo de desarrollar una enfermedad periodontal. Una manera eficaz de prevenir la enfermedad periodontal es cepillarse y usar el hilo dental todos los días, dejar de fumar e ir al dentista con regularidad para las limpiezas profesionales y las evaluaciones periódicas.
