En el marco de la Ceremonia de Entrega de Certificados de la Universidad de
Cambridge, el BRITÁNICO otorgó trece Becas a la Excelencia a los estudiantes:
Angela Aliaga, Rodrigo Madrid, Ernesto Torres, Johnny Bernal, Franshesca
Curotto, Katherine Salkeld, Maria Grazia Sibille, Sofía Chávez, Erika Mamani,
José Carlos Musante, Gerardo Torres, Sting Lucana y Katherine Ponciano,
quienes obtuvieron A en el examen FCE, además de cumplir con determinados
requisitos.
Los trece becados tendrán la oportunidad de viajar a Londres por un mes, con
todos los gastos pagados, para complementar su aprendizaje del inglés en la
prestigiosa escuela de idiomas International House.
El evento contó con la presencia del Embajador Británico, James Dauris,
la Presidenta del Consejo Directivo, Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga, y Enrique
Anderson y Thomas Malcomson, miembro del Consejo Directivo y Gerente
General, respectivamente; así como profesores y familiares de los estudiantes.
En esta oportunidad, se repartieron cerca de 400 certificados.

En el mes de junio, doce alumnos ganaron la Beca a la Excelencia. En esta oportunidad, uno de ellos nos brinda su testimonio de
viaje:

London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of
London, he is tired of life; for there is in
London all that life can afford.”

How could we refuse to accept the
truth in Johnson’s words? Vibrant,
cosmopolitan, historical, London has
something for everyone. And this is
such a true statement that it cannot
be imagined unless you’ve been there.
Living for a month in London is more
than enough to comprehend that “there
is in London all that life can afford”. And
I really want to thank the BRITÁNICO
for the fantastic opportunity. My trip
to London had several highlights which were truly breathtaking…
Who would not be amazed by the greatness of the well-known Big
Ben, that huge clock tower which over the years has been a symbol,
not only of the fascinating Houses of
Parliament, but also the symbol and
heart of London and of the entire UK!
Seeing it for the first time, just walking
outside of Westminster station, below
the bridge and in front of the historical
Thames, is a magical experience.
I remember my first day at the city
centre, too. I woke up a little late, still
having trouble with the time zone, and
decided to see the city for the first time.
The place I lived in was just as I had
imagined, with old streets that can be
seen in any Mr Bean chapter. Suddenly,
I stared at a red double-decker bus
coming towards the station, an icon of
London – later it would be an everyday
means of transport for me! I reached Ealing Broadway station, always
under the soft rain that characterises the city, and got on the Tube for
the first time, on a Central Line train to Oxford Circus. The 20-minute
journey to the city centre ended on the famous Oxford Street, London’s
greatest commercial street, a place I still did not know at all. It was
there that I noticed one of the most interesting features of the city:
its cosmopolitanism, the wide range of cultures that meet in the city.
There were people in London from all over the world: Japan, South
Korea, India, Brazil, Arabia, Italy, Russia, China, etc. The effect it had
on the city was marvellous; it was possible to find restaurants from a
great number of countries, customs that were very unfamiliar to me;
it was also possible to hear people talking in languages I did not even
know existed!
On my first day of classes at IH, I was completely alone so I went
for a walk just outside the institute, near Holborn Station. Later I was
I finally reached the end of the trip. I spent the last
days buying some souvenirs for my family and my
friends, apart from saying good bye to the great
friends I made and to the city of London in the last
day at the city centre. Heathrow welcomed Melisa
and me again early the next morning, this time in a
sadder moment. We finally departed from the city,
but the memories of the trip still stay in my mind.
I would really like to thank all the BRITÁNICO staff
for all the support during the preparation process
for the trip, as well as all those great teachers who
motivated me constantly while I was still in classes,
teachers who inspire and to whom I am in debt. However, I
lack words to express my feelings to my family, especially to
my dear uncle Salo and my parents. They were always there,
encouraging me to do my best all the time and setting me
targets that at times seemed to be very far away.
And how to forget to thank God, when He is the
One who has let me achieve what I have managed
to achieve until now?
All in all, I must say I do not have enough words
to show my gratitude towards the BRITÁNICO for
this incredible opportunity. Trips like this have an
enormous impact in life: they let your mind expand
to new horizons, they get you out of your bubble
and show you how the world works, they remind
you there are lots of more opportunities than you
can imagine, and, finally, they teach you how
important is to know your own country, your dear
Peru, and make you realise that there is still a lot to
do for the country and for the world. You have the
chance, why not take it? The world opens its doors
to you. The next step is in your hands. As Arthur
C. Clarke once said, “the only way to discover the limits of the
possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.” Go ahead!

Winner of the Scholarship for Excellence 2010-II
surprised to see I had walked that day round several historical
places of the city: Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the London School of
Economics and Political Sciences, the Royal College of Surgeons,
the Royal Courts of Justice, and so on. But what made that day
so special was the fact that I reached the Thames riverside…
That was really exciting, one of my best memories of the trip. It
was also the first time I saw Big Ben and the London
Eye, both far away in the background. London is
amazing!

Going beyond into the Impossible...
Graduación de “Jardineritos”
con el apoyo del BRITÁNICO
En marzo se realizó la ceremonia de graduación de una promoción
más de jóvenes jardineros del programa “Jardineritos”, que el
BRITÁNICO viene auspiciando desde hace varios años.
La señora Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga, Presidenta del Consejo Directivo
del BRITÁNICO y el señor Alejandro Vassilaqui, Sub Gerente General
de CEDRO, entregaron los Certificados de Capacitación y juegos de
herramientas de jardinería a los graduados.

El evento también contó con la asistencia de autoridades de Jardines
de la Paz, CEDRO y BRITÁNICO. Este proyecto se encarga de educar
y capacitar a jóvenes de la casa hogar de CEDRO, en labores de
jardinería, con el objetivo de insertarlos en la sociedad y, por ende,
al mercado laboral, ya sea en forma dependiente o independiente.
Con estas prácticas de responsabilidad social, el BRITÁNICO quiere
retribuir, de alguna manera, a la comunidad, la confianza puesta a lo
largo de los años.

BRITÁNICO.
Emergency Blanket de gira
Emergency Blanket, una de las bandas peruanas con
mayor proyección internacional estuvo de gira por
Estados Unidos.
Los recordados ganadores del “Peoples Music Awards”
en el 2010 en Londres- Inglaterra, que los llevó a
iniciar un tour por Inglaterra, Francia y Suiza, regresan
a nuestro país celebrando ser la banda peruana con
mayor proyección internacional actualmente.
Durante la gira, Emergency Blanket participó del
“SXSW 4 Japan” con la grabación de un tema musical,
evento promovido por los “Hanson Brothers” para
apoyar a las víctimas del Terremoto de Japón. Entre
muchos de los artistas internacionales que se unieron
a esta lista de invitados estuvo el ídolo Michael Stipe
vocalista de la famosa banda REM.
El BRITÁNICO viene apoyando a esta importante banda
desde hace el año pasado.

TEACHING PRACTICE (TPs) ELT students

According to our programme, the ELT students do their TEACHING PRACTICES (TPs) within the last two cycles (ELT4 and
ELT5) of the course.
• On April 9 and 16, our current ELT4 students ran speaking sessions in San Borja, San Miguel and Pueblo Libre. Lots of
students at different levels participated in the different activities and had the opportunity to use and enjoy the English they
were learning.
• On May 14 and 21, the ELT5 students will be doing their second TEACHING PRACTICE (TPs). These will be offered in San
Miguel, San Juan de Lurigancho and Surco.
Students of all levels are invited to join and participate in these speaking activities which are free of charge. For further
information, ask at the Reception desk of your centre or phone our call Centre 615-3434.

Nuevamente retomamos el programa Tiempo libre
dedicado a nuestros alumnos regulares, quienes
esperaban con verdadero interés poder participar en
estos talleres para aprender, experimentar y —en fin—
dejarse envolver por la magia de las artes manuales.

Este mes tuvimos actividades novedosas que cautivaron
a los estudiantes de los centros de San Juan de
Lurigancho y Los Jardines, donde se dictaron clases
de pintura en trupán aplicada a cuadros con fondo
marino, trabajados con pinturas acrílicas, accesorios
decorativos a los que se agregó una capa de resina para
darles duración. En el BRITÁNICO San Borja ofrecimos
una sesión de bisutería en la que los asistentes lograron
producir finos juegos de pulsera y aretes a base de
cuentas de madreperla y murano. En el BRITÁNICO
San Isidro los participantes pintaron y decoraron un
portaCD con relieves florales que los ayudaron a definir
la imagen así como a crear luces y sombras, y obtener
bellos resultados. Ya en el BRITÁNICO Surco, se creó
mucha expectativa con la presentación del tiramisú;
muy puntuales, nuestros alumnos tomaron nota de los
detalles de la receta e intervinieron en la preparación
y principalmente en la degustación de este delicioso
postre.

ABOUT THE UNITED KINGDOM
How old is Stonehenge?
Stonehenge, the most
famous
prehistoric
monument in Britain, is
situated on Salisbury Plain
in the county of Wiltshire.
At various times regarded
as a site built by the Druids,
the Romans, the Danes
and even the French, the
first stage – a circular ditch
and bank with an entrance
flanked by a pair of small
standing stones – is believed
to have been built around
3,000 BC. The site was
subsequently abandoned
and rebuilt between 2100
BC and 1800 BC.
There are many mysteries surrounding this ancient site. Some
of the stones used are thought to have come from the Preseli
mountains in Pembrokeshire, Wales – yet exactly how they
were transported to the site in such a primitive age is a puzzle.
Experts believe they may
have been transported for
most of the way by water,
before being dragged
overland for the last stage
of the journey.
It has been suggested
that Stonehenge once
operated as a massive
astronomical clock, and
there are even suggestions
that it was a landing site
for UFOs (Unidentified
Flying Objects)! A more
likely
explanation
is
that Stonehenge was
an important centre of
worship connected with the sun.

Saint Patrick’s day
• Geovanna Martínez, Surco Deputy Head of
Centre
On March 17th at BRITÁNICO Surco, we all celebrated
the day of this saint who Christianised people in Ireland
using the shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of
the Trinity. It was a good opportunity for teachers and
students to gather and share information, and also
enjoy some delicious green jelly in the SAC.
Taking advantage of this celebration, students and
teachers collected information by searching on the
Internet, reading magazines and listening to the news.
Students were awarded prizes which were provided
by the marketing area, such as pens, notebooks and
pencil cases.

Thanks to everyone who participated and contributed
to the success of this event.

Last March, Ms Romilly de Buck organised a film club for
our students in BRITÁNICO Camacho. Here some students
comments on the activity:
“I participated in the first meeting of the BRITÁNICO’s film
club. Teacher Romilly introduced it with a very interesting
presentation about the films in its early days. She talked
about the Lumière brothers and the first silent movies. Then
we all discussed our favourites actors and actresses, best
movies we had seen and the kind of movies we prefer. The
idea of sharing opinions with other people who like movies
like me was awesome. I can’t wait for the next meeting.”

“The first film club meeting was very interesting and
fun for me. They welcomed us with popcorn and soda
and at the end there was a surprise! I enjoyed the
presentation, specially the soundtracks. Then I realized
that while we were discussing what kind of movies
we like or giving examples of movie genres, we were
actually training our speaking skills and learning some
new words. We shared opinions and met people from
different classes. I think it is a great idea to improve
our English by practising out of the regular schedule.”

Although some students are very fluent speakers, they
stammer or become speechless when they are asked to talk
about environmental problems and that’s just because there
is a lack of knowledge about them.
Last month, the world rallied for one hour to give a hand to
our planet. It was an appropriate occasion for my advanced
3 students from schedules 7:00 to 8:30 and 6:00 to 7:30
to give a presentation about environmental issues which not
only helped them to increase their awareness of what is going
on around our planet, but also benefited them by enabling
them to gain new vocabulary and be prepared to get their
ideas across whenever they are asked a question related to
one of the above-mentioned topics.
We are all aware that Mother Nature is essential to mankind,
and is now sending us signals to which we must pay attention,
so YOU who are reading this, remember that it is urgent to
act now as our planet is not doing well. “OUR FUTURE IS IN
OUR HANDS.”

The students from Kids 2 and Kids 3 showed their
enthusiasm preparing a poster with seven steps
explaining why it is important to recycle and the
best way to do it. Students explained and presented
a wide variety of things they can do with recycled
material such as toys, dresses, etc.
There is no doubt that they are creative!!
American Indians Back!

Though learning about the past simple is no picnic for kids,
performing as American Indians and talking about how their lives
were was a fantastic experience for my KIDS 09.
The buzz of excitement started when they thought up Indian names
like ‘Desert Flower’, ‘Fast Hunter’ or ‘Strong Buffalo’. Then, wearing
colourful feathers, they introduced themselves saying something like,
‘Hi, I was ‘Brave Tiger’ and I lived in a tepee. My father hunted…’
The success not only in their presentations but also in passing their
exams with flying colours confirmed that students learn better by
doing. Moreover, they had a good time and I am pretty sure they will
remember it for a long time.
