Music Education Programs Offer
Students a Wide Range of Skills
The latest research shows that learning music may work to improve learning, especially spatial reasoning skills
associated with math. Learning an instrument teaches students the “marriage of hand and mind,” spatial
hand-eye coordination that is critical for mechanics, engineering, and surgical medicine (not to mention the
ability to fix your own car). Playing music also uses a large part of the brain.
At Our Lady of the Lakes, musicians and singers infuse our church and school community with vibrant
presentations:
Our Glee Club participated at the 10th annual Catholic Schools Fine Arts Extravaganza, hosted
at Archbishop McCarthy High School as well as the Dade County Youth Fair.
Young students play rhythms on drums and i-Pads.
3rd graders are preparing to perform on soprano recorders for the school’s May Crowning event.
4th graders welcomed Pope Francis by singing a rap song about Pope John Paul II written by
Fr. Stan Fortuna, a rapping priest from NYC.
8th graders are learning how to operate the music workstation, Garage Band, for the i-Pads as well as
creating their own songs.

Made in the image of the Triune God, the human person is, by nature, a social being, made for loving
relationship in a communion of persons. Tragically, we live in a society where some seek to condition
people-girls and women especially-to denigrate motherhood and [the] spousal relationship, going so far
as to insist with the HHS mandate that which is unique to women-the ability to conceive and bear a
child-should be viewed as something like an unwelcome disease which needs to be suppressed. Far
from being an advancement in freedom for women, such attitudes diminish women and detract from
their fundamental, inherent dignity.

Registration for the upcoming September 2013– May 2014 religious education classes
will begin on Monday, April 29th. Registration hours are as follows:
Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:00am-12:00pm &1:00-4:00pm

Those who take advantage of this early registration will receive a $25.00
