I
n keeping with the Cycle B
"struggling" theme, this weekend's
readings deal with the struggle to
know and be known--the struggle to love. In the
story told in Genesis, Adam "names" the animals-i.e., he wants to know about them, figure them
out, and a part of knowing is naming. But, he also
needs to be "known," named, tamed. And God
provides, and then we are two--man and woman-and we learn how difficult it is to "know" another! Animals can't talk back, so we think we
know them. Women can talk back, men can talk
back, and in that dialogue we learn how little we
really know about each other--even after years of
living together. The Letter to the Hebrews speculates on God learning to "know us" from the inside out, as God becomes us in Christ, and how
that is a window for us into God--and knowing
God. The Gospel is obviously a meditation on
marriage--the partnership of coming to truly
know another, and how we need to be reassured
that as our spouse grows in knowledge of us they
won't trash us, but will try to see the beauty of
whatever they find. Good advice for lots of cases,
don't you think?

as lecturas del Ciclo B siguen con el
tema de la lucha, el día de hoy vemos
la lucha de conocer y de ser conocidos
– la lucha del amor. En la historia del Génesis,
Adán “nombra” a los animales– es decir, quiere
saber sobre ellos junto con sus nombres. Pero, él
también necesita ser conocido. Y Dios provee, y
llegan a ser dos, hombre y mujer. De ahí aprendemos qué tan difícil es de llegar a
“conocernos.” Los animales no pueden hablar
de regreso, y creemos que los conocemos. Las
mujeres y los hombres pueden hablar, y en el
diálogo nos damos cuenta lo poquito que nos conocemos, aún cuando hemos vivido tantos años
juntos. La carta a los Hebreos habla de cómo
Dios nos conoce desde el interior y exterior,
cuando Dios llega a ser uno de nosotros a través
de Cristo, se abre una ventana para llegar y conocer a Dios. El Evangelio es una meditación sobre
el matrimonio– el llegar a conocernos en vedad,
y cómo necesitamos la seguridad que nuestro esposo nos siga conociendo sin que nos menosprecie, pero de que en verdad nos valore y vea la
belleza en nosotros. Un buen consejo para muchos, ¿no creen?

he readings today want to say something essentially positive about human
relationships: that in the joining of husband and wife we have one of the original blessings of God upon humanity, a blessing that was not
lost in humanity's fall into sin. Yet human relationships are risky. But it is also a blessing because the
love that husband and wife freely give each other is
ultimately a reflection of the love that God freely
gives to them. Let us take the time today to ask for
God's blessings on all our relationships that help us
grow closer to God and to each other.
