From the Executive Director…
Dear Parents,
Welcome back! We hope that everyone enjoyed their summer break and
you’re ready to embark on another successful school year. This promises
to be an exciting year. The CDCPS network continues to grow as we add
the Upper Schools to Gateway and Webster, including extracurricular
activities like basketball, ultimate Frisbee, and outdoor adventure club. We
also are opening our new Webster location at 439 S. Union Street giving
our schools more room as they continue to grow.
We are not just growing our facilities and programs. As our network of
schools expand, we are working to build a central team to ensure that all
our schools continue to maintain the high standards we established. To
solidify that work, we transitioned Mary Chance into the role of deputy
executive director for academics; Pat Teichman into the supervisor for
early learning; and Brent Merten into the deputy executive director for
operations. This group has more than 45 years of experience at CDCPS
and they are already hard at work with the wonderful administrators and
teachers at all our schools getting ready for the 2016-17 school year.
Lastly, I want to thank our parents for partnering with us in their
children’s education. We could not do it without you and we hope to see

abriendo nuestra nueva ubicación de Webster en 439 S. Union Street
dando nuestras escuelas más espacio a medida que continúan creciendo.

Technology Updates ...
It is with great excitement that I welcome
you back for our 2016-2017 academic
school year. I sincerely hope the summer
was filled with reading, relaxation, and
rejuvenation prior to beginning the next
journey for your child’s academic career.
The summer was filled with exciting work
to continue to prepare our staff for the
first day of school, to prepare our
buildings for your children, and to
continue the tradition of excellence in
education we have fostered with you as
partners.
As part of this preparation, I wanted to
relay that as we begin classes in late
August, we will be working to integrate
technology more in the classroom. The
Department of Education announced they
will be phasing in computer-based end of
the year testing for MCAS 2.0 (an updated
version of our previous MCAS testing
given annually by the state) for all schools
and grade levels to be taking a computer-

based assessments by 2019. In order to
work toward this goal, this year the state
will require all grade four and all grade
eight students to participate in testing on
the computer for mathematics and English
language arts.
We are excited to begin working with our
curriculum, our infrastructure, and our
technology to develop even more ways to
utilize technology in the classroom. We
will be working closely with our IT team,
school leaders, and teachers to introduce
ways of more practice for use of
Chromebooks and other technology for
activities, learning tasks, projects,
presentations, and assessment items. For
us, the major goal is giving our students
more experience and tools with
technology as we look to prepare them
for high school. Indeed, each year we are
seeking ways to push our students to GO
BEYOND!

Messages From the
Heads of School…
As the summer is coming to an end, we
truly hope that you enjoyed it and would
like to welcome you back to an exciting
2016-17 school year. The Webster Early
Learning Center (ELC) staff is enthusiastic
about the beginning of the new school
year and working with your child/ren this
year. The first day of school is Monday,
August 22 and we are all excited to see
the returning faces as well as our new K1
faces.
We strongly encourage you to come
meet your child’s teacher, see the
classroom and school at the Webster
ELC Open House on Wednesday, August
17 from 4:30-6 p.m. This is a great
opportunity to partner with your child’s
teacher and learn about the expectations
of the classroom. In addition, you can
bring any supplies from the wishlist on
this day and leave them with your child’s
teacher if you choose to do so. The open
house also is an opportunity to ask
questions and ensure you and your child
are ready for the first day of school!
Please also mark your calendar for our
annual Family Picnic at Rolling Ridge in
North Andover on Tuesday, September
13 from 5-7 p.m.

I would like to welcome everyone back
for the 2016-17 school year. This is a time
of excitement and growth, as we are
starting a new year in a new building. The
CDCPS-Webster staff spent countless
hours preparing for what will surely be a

community. I began my career in Phoenix,
AZ. After learning about the Community
Day network and all that it was doing in
Lawrence, my wife and I decided to move
to Massachusetts and become a part of

Blacksmithing Friday in the Forge

Step back in time with us for a day of
blacksmithing at the Lawrence History
Center in the Essex Company forge, the
company that built the city of Lawrence!
Richard Wright of the Granite State
Hammer Alliance will be demonstrating
the craft of traditional blacksmithing
methods, forging both iron and mild
steel to create items for practical use in
our historic courtyard. For more

The Spicket River Cleanup provides an
opportunity for the community to come
together and beautify the city along the
Spicket River, which crosses Lawrence
and Methuen. This is a great time to
gather neighbors, family, friends,
coworkers from for-profit and
nonprofit organizations, and
neighborhood associations to form a
group and get the work down while
creating and strengthening bonds. To
