La Semilla The Seed As you may know, we started our first 12-year visits in April! In addition to beginning the visits, we want to share our new study findings and upcoming CHAMACOS community events. Read up and give us a call if you have any questions! Latest Study Findings* • BPA and Thyroid Hormone: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical found in hard plastics and cans used for food and drink. We found that mothers in CHAMACOS, who had higher levels of BPA, also had lower levels of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones are important for the regulation of your body. • Mother’s Stress and Child’s Nervous System: Mayo 2012 In this issue: • Review of the latest study findings • Hiding in your couch: Flame Retardants • Staff Spotlight: Jose Camacho • Your teeth are flying to Australia! • CHAMACOS Field Trip A study of the nervous system found that the children of CHAMACOS mothers with more stress had specific nervous system measurements, suggesting that stressful events during pregnancy may affect children as they get older. • Manganese and Teeth: CHAMACOS scientific partners are developing a new way to measure exposure to manganese (a metal used as part of some pesticides). They will drill small dots in the teeth of the CHAMACOS children given to the study. The small dots will be measured for manganese. • Mother’s Blood Sugar and Childhood Obesity: Higher blood sugar in mothers during pregnancy is associated with more obesity and higher blood pressure in their kids. * This is an overview of our findings. To learn more about our research results feel free to call the field office at 831.759.6548, or visit us online: cerch.org/research-programs/chamacos/ May 2012 ¡Como ya sabrá, empezamos las primeras visitas de 12 años de los niños en Abril! The Seed (May 2012) Hiding in your couch: Flame Retardants What are flame retardants? Flame retardants are a group of chemicals used to reduce the flammability of items in our homes. Since the 1970’s, flame retardants were added to foam in furniture, carpet padding, building materials, and electronics. These flame retardants are now banned from use in these products, but high levels of flame retardants are still in California houses. What are the health effects of flame retardants? Flame retar- dants have been linked to unhealthy changes in hormones and development in humans and animals. ¿Que ha encontrado el Estudio What has the CHAMACOS Study found? The CHAMACOS? CHAMACOS ha publicado unos de los Are children at a higher risk to Flame Retardants? CHAMACOS Study has published some of the most important papers on flame retardants. We have found that flame retardants are linked to: • A longer time to get pregnant. • Lower thyroid hormone levels during pregnancy • Lower infant birth weight. Yes, children have higher levels of flame retardants in their bodies than adults. We think this is because they play more on the floor, get house dust with flame retardants on their hands, and then put their hands in their mouths without washing them first. How can you prevent exposure to flame retardants? estudios más importantes sobre retardantes de fuego. • Repair or replace furniture, mattresses, car upholstery and children’s car seats that have a ripped cover or exposed foam. If you buy used furniture and, or children’s products, make sure they are in good shape. • Thoroughly wash both your hands and your child’s hands, especially before preparing food or eating. • Take off shoes before coming indoors to avoid tracking chemicals into the home. • Use a damp mop or dust cloth to control household dust. • Use a vacuum with a special HEPA filter may also reduce exposure. • Open windows to ventilate your home with fresh air. • Policymakers are also condsidering new laws to reduce the amount of flame retardants in our homes.
