Jesus Is Born in Our Hearts
Jesús nace en nuestros corazones
Queridos lectores:
Dear friends:
Este fin de año nos encuentra viviendo en situaciones económicas
muy difíciles. Miles de familias han sufrido la pérdida de su casa o
de su trabajo. Pensar en regalos de Navidad es para muchos motivo
de angustia, y no pocos han sentido que se les acaba la esperanza. Es
en estos momentos difíciles cuando más necesitamos escuchar las
palabras de aliento que nos anuncia el Adviento. Su mensaje de esperanza en un mundo mejor nos anuncia que Dios proveerá y que, Jesús,
Dios-con-nosotros es la razón de esta temporada, no los regalos.
Recuerdo una experiencia de mi juventud en la cual experimenté este sentido verdadero del Adviento y la Navidad. Fue a raíz de
un retiro, que los miembros del coro parroquial decidimos rescatar
el sentido verdadero de la Navidad. Nos resultaba muy claro que el
nacimiento de Jesús y su mensaje de esperanza había sido secuestrado por la publicidad y el consumismo. Incluso los domingos, la
gente estaba más interesada en visitar las tiendas que los templos.
Los escaparates de los grandes almacenes daban la impresión de
ser altares, y sus luces de neón parecían opacar la estrella de Belén,
como si su luz no fuera necesaria en nuestras vidas.
¿Qué podía hacer un coro de jóvenes contra el bombardeo incesante de imágenes vendiéndonos ropa, perfumes, artículos de lujo y
todo tipo de productos para ser felices? Después de mucha reflexión,
decidimos hacer una pancarta grande con este mensaje: JESÚS NACE
EN NUESTROS CORAZONES, NO EN LAS TIENDAS. Una vez
terminada, le pedimos permiso al párroco de colgarla en el atrio del
templo a la vista de miles de personas que pasaban por la parroquia.
Además de la pancarta, también decidimos seleccionar cantos que nos
hablaran muy claro sobre el mensaje de la Navidad y su significado
profundo en nuestras vidas, sin importar nuestras posesiones.
El material ofrecido en este número de Liturgia y Canción les
ayudará a profundizar su espiritualidad en esta entrañable temporada. El repertorio musical de Adviento y Navidad reúne cantos
llenos de esperanza en un mundo mejor. Nuestra oración es que
sean motivo de esperanza y alegría para todos los fieles de su parroquia, especialmente los más pobres.

The end of this year finds us facing difficult economic
times. Thousands of families have suffered the loss
of home and jobs. To think about buying presents
this Christmas is for many a source of anxiety, and
not a few feel quite hopeless. It is in this kind of situation that we need to hear the words of encouragement announced in the Advent season. Its message
of hope in a better world assures us that God will
provide, that Jesus-in-our-midst is the reason for the
season, not gifts or possessions.
I remember an experience in my youth when I
came to understand the real meaning of the Word
becoming flesh to dwell among us. My friends and
I had just finished a retreat with the youth choir
when we decided to rescue the true meaning
of Christmas. We were convinced that the birth
of Jesus and his message of hope had been
kidnapped by advertisements and consumerism.
Even on Sundays people were more interested in
visiting shops than temples. The window displays
of department stores gave the impression of altars,
and their neon lights overshadowed the Star of
Bethlehem, making it look irrelevant to our lives.
What could a group of people from the youth
choir do against the constant bombardment of
images selling us clothes, perfumes, and all kinds
of products for our happiness? After much reflection we decided to make a huge banner with the
words: JESUS IS BORN IN OUR HEARTS NOT
IN STORES. Once finished, we asked permission
from the pastor to hang the banner in the parish
atrium for all the passers-by to see. We also selected Advent songs with very clear messages about
Christmas and its profound meaning for our lives.
This issue of Liturgia y Canción offers Advent and
Christmas songs filled with hope for a better world. May
they be a source of hope and joy for all the faithful in your
parish, particularly the poor and vulnerable.

These seasonal reflections are from Palabra, Vida y Fe,
the OCP publication written entirely in Spanish to help
individuals and families develop a regular prayer life and
strengthen their Catholic faith throughout the year. This
resource offers readings, inspirational reflections, saints’

this guide for daily prayer is to help us all live out our faith
in our homes and find and celebrate God’s presence.
When this happens, we’re better prepared to share our
faith as members of a community when we gather to
celebrate the Sunday Eucharist. In this issue, we offer you
an English translation of a reflection written for Our Lady
of Guadalupe.

a Virgen de Guadalupe nos pertenece a todos,
no sólo a México y a los mexicanos. La imagen
morena, mestiza, de la madre del “Verdadero Dios
por quien se vive” es la manifestación clara de la alianza
renovada que Dios hace con los pueblos de América Latina.
La Virgen de Guadalupe es quien reconcilia los años sangrientos no sólo de la patria mexicana, sino de toda la violencia que había significado la conquista para miles y miles de
indígenas del Nuevo Mundo.
Mientras que algunos conquistadores actuaron cegados
por el oro y el ansia de poder, los religiosos franciscanos,
dominicos, agustinos y jesuitas se dieron a la tarea de vivir
con la gente, aprender su idioma y sus culturas. ¿Cómo
predicar el Evangelio a estos pueblos que jamás habían
oído hablar del Dios de Abraham, Isaac y Jacob? ¿Cómo
hablarles acerca de Jesús y de su Reino? Estos misioneros
marcaron la diferencia entre la Palabra y la espada.
Pero el Evangelio se extendió rápidamente sólo a partir
del martes 12 de diciembre de 1531, fecha en que la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se quedó plasmada
en la tilma de Juan Diego. A la sazón, el derramamiento de
sangre a causa de la conquista era algo inaudito, los pueblos indígenas estaban desapareciendo y no abrazaban la fe

he Virgin of Guadalupe pertains to all of us, not just
to Mexico and its people. The dark-skinned, mestiza
(mixed race) image of the mother of “the true God
for whom we live” is a clear manifestation of the renewed
alliance that God made with the Latin American people. It
is the Virgin of Guadalupe who reconciles years of bloodshed, not only in the Mexican homeland, but throughout
the New World, where violence led to the conquest of
thousands upon thousands of indigenous people.
While some conquistadors were blinded by a yearning
for gold and power, the religious orders of Franciscans,
Dominicans, Augustines, and Jesuits were given the task
of living with the people and learning their languages
and cultures. How did they preach the Gospel to those
who had never heard of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob? How did they speak to them about Jesus and
his kingdom? These missionaries were the difference
between the Word and the sword.
It was only after Tuesday, December 12, 1531, the
day that Our Lady of Guadalupe was embodied on Juan
Diego’s cloak, that the Gospel spread rapidly. At that
time, the bloodshed of the conquest was unprecedented;
the indigenous people were disappearing and had not
embraced the Christian faith. To them, their gods had
died or been destroyed by the Spaniards, and without
their gods, their lives had no purpose.
The name Juan Diego in Náhuatl was Cuauhtlatoatzin,
“the talking eagle.” In his language, signs and symbols
are used much more than words. In fact, the only way
to speak truthfully about the land is expressed in “flower
and song,” the purity of the earth, the purity of the spirit.
While he walked from Cuautitlán to Tlatelolco to participate in Mass, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan
Diego for the first time on the hill of Tepeyac, and he
called her, tenderly, “my daughter (maiden).” She asked
him to go before the bishop Fray Juan de Zumárraga to
ask him to build a temple. As was to be expected, they
didn’t believe Juan Diego, who asked that the “Lady from
heaven” send someone who wasn’t a macehual—the
lowest class among the Nahua people—no more than a
“wooden stair.” Nevertheless, the tenderness of the Lady
from heaven overcame the humility of Juan Diego; she
asked that he go and take the sign that the bishop had
asked for in their second meeting.
Due to the illness of his uncle, Juan Bernardino, Juan
Diego hid himself so that the Lady would not see him,
but she still found him. Juan Diego told her that his uncle
was sick. The answer was unconditional: “Am I not here,
who am your mother?” The following day, Juan Diego
went to his meeting and the bishop asked for a sign.
Through the Castile flowers, grown on a rocky peak in
the winter season, Juan Diego knew that what he carried
was eternal truth. He had experienced it and carried it as
a symbol. He unfurled his cloth before the bishop, who
cried in repentance for not having believed the messenger
of the Lady.
The Nahua people, upon seeing this image with the
colors of their gods in a pregnant woman, with her face
lightly bowed, understood the divine language of the
image. They knew that she was not a goddess because
a god bows before no one. Although she was not a goddess, they knew that she was very important because the
sun (considered a god) radiated from her and she herself
had the colors of a queen and a goddess. In addition to
speaking their language, she had the color of their skin and
was of their own race. This self-image is the manifestation
of God’s love for their people, their culture and suffering.
Even today, the Virgin of Guadalupe is the soul of the Latin
American people and, in her, both immigrant and resident
discover a meeting place from which to turn again toward
God, who comes to us in the person of Jesus. Truly, she
is the queen and empress of all America.

Diego se escondió para que no lo viera la Señora, pero
ella lo encontró. Juan Diego le comentó que su tío estaba
enfermo. La respuesta fue incondicional: “¿No estoy yo
aquí que soy tu madre?” Al día siguiente, Juan Diego fue
a su encuentro y le pidió la señal. Mediante las flores de

inclinado, entendieron el lenguaje divino de la imagen.
Sabían que no era diosa porque un dios no se inclina ante
nadie. Aunque no era diosa, sabían que era muy importante
porque del interior salía el Sol (a quien consideraban como
dios) y ella misma tenía los colores de una reina y de una
diosa. Además de hablar su idioma, tenía su color de piel
y era de su propia raza. Esta imagen en sí misma es la
manifestación del amor de Dios por su gente, su cultura y
el sufrimiento de su pueblo. Hasta la fecha, la Virgen de
Guadalupe es el alma de los pueblos de América Latina y,
en ella, tanto el emigrante como el residente, descubren su
punto de encuentro para ir nuevamente hacia el Dios que
viene a nosotros en la persona de Jesús. En verdad, ella es
la Reina y Emperatriz de toda América.

ste es el tercer artículo en serie que presenta
la historia de todos aquellos que han heredado
algún ministerio de música sin tener la preparación musical, especialmente un coro. Hemos reconocido la importancia de entender la visión y la misión de la
parroquia, la importancia del ensayo y qué hacer durante
el ensayo.
A manera de repaso, uno de los aspectos más importantes
del ensayo es comenzar y terminar a tiempo. Ser puntuales
y congruentes demuestra que el ensayo es asunto serio,
fomenta el respeto hacia un plan y reafirma el compromiso
de todos los que han decidido dar su tiempo y talento al
ministerio de música.
Una vez establecidas la rutina y la estructura del ensayo,
podemos dedicar más tiempo a situaciones específicas. Por
ejemplo, en un coro hay que enfrentar ciertas dificultades:
cuando nos encontramos con un miembro sumamente comprometido, pero que no puede cantar ni una nota en tono. O
bien, tenemos al guitarrista comprometido(a) que tiene sus
propias ideas rítmicas, a veces, un tanto creativas. También
podemos encontrar a un percusionista fanático del rock,
junto a otro que le gusta el merengue y otro más que considera que el único ritmo que existe es la cumbia. Y luego, nos
encontramos con la persona que alega que dirigió grupos
musicales por años y que las cosas deben ser de ésta u otra
manera. ¿Qué hacer?
Lo más importante es no perder la calma, mantener la
compostura y cordura, y sobre todas las cosas, no salir corriendo del ensayo. Aquí ofrezco algunas soluciones.

aspecto musical, en realidad no lo están. Como director de

story of all those who, though without musical
training, have inherited a music ministry—
especially a choir. I have discussed the importance of
understanding the vision and the mission of the parish,
the importance of the rehearsal, and what to do during
the rehearsal.
In review, one of the most important aspects of the
rehearsal is to start and end on time. To be punctual and
consistent demonstrates that the rehearsal is serious
business; it tells us there is a plan and reaffirms the commitment of those who have decided to give their time and
talent to music ministry.
Once the routine and the rehearsal structure have
been established, we can target and spend more time on
specific situations. As directors of the choir, we will face
some common challenges. For example, we may have a
member who is extremely committed but cannot sing a

The Persistent Singer
Music is very subjective. For this reason, it is difficult to
tell someone they are out of tune, especially when they
are not aware of their intonation problems. Other vocal
problems include breath management, excess vibrato,

in another article. For now I will offer some practical tips
for working with the choir member who persistently sings
out of tune.
One effective way of exposing the problem is to record
the rehearsal. It could be the entire rehearsal or just a
section. When I studied choral conducting, we ourselves
were the principal evaluation tools. We observed our
own participation in class by means of audio and video
recordings. Afterwards we filled out a form with very specific questions covering a variety of details, from posture
and eye contact to facial expression. This technique had
immediate effects. It saved time, gave objective feedback—despite our moods and opinions—and we made
steady progress.

The Virtuous Guitarist
Everything stated in the previous section regarding behavior
modification, especially approving of and reinforcing errors,
applies to this section. Let us avoid positively reinforcing
something that our conscience tells us is not right. Even
the most talented musicians will fail if they do not keep their
ears fixed on the congregation and the choir and their eyes
on the conductor. It is also important to understand the
essential role of music in the celebration of the Eucharist.
The accompanist (in the example below, a guitarist) must
work closely with the director to provide music that fulfills
its role (in the Eucharist) and to ensure that the music delivers the message of the word of God. This goal cannot be
reached if we do not develop the “divine ear” necessary to
unify the people in song and praise.

De la misma forma podemos trabajar con los distintos
instrumentos que acompañan al coro. No podemos dejar de
recalcar la importancia del texto. No pasa prácticamente un
ensayo en el cual no tenga que recordarles a los acompañantes que todos cantamos en coro y cuando entendemos
que a través de nuestro instrumento podemos cantar, el
sonido del grupo cambia de inmediato.
La batalla de los percusionistas
¡Qué dilema! Lo que aquí les contaré es un caso verídico.
Una vez fui invitado a trabajar con un coro hispano que
tenía tres percusionistas. Uno de ellos llevaba aproximadamente veinte años en el coro tocando las congas y sólo
conocía tres ritmos: merengue, merengue lento y merengue
rápido. El segundo llevaba unos diez años tocando los
bongós y sencillamente seguía las indicaciones del que
tocaba las congas. Durante el taller no tardé en enterarme
del problema que había con el tercer y nuevo percusionista,
el cual tenía sus propias ideas e instrucciones sobre cómo
se tocaban los ritmos. Medio en broma, medio en serio:
¡Eso era una batalla! Hay veces que aunque le expliquemos
las cosas a nuestros grupos, hace falta que alguien de fuera
sirva de intermediario para ponerlo todo en perspectiva. Yo

Considering the reality of many Hispanic choirs, I have
decided to use the example of a guitarist in this section.
First, do not hesitate to ask for help from those who play
the instrument well. If you do not play the guitar (my personal case), then you can ask one of the guitarists (if you
are lucky to have more than one) to be the leader and
help others. Even so, we can give specific instructions
like these:
• I prefer that section to be played in arpeggio
instead of strumming (style).
• I would like no playing on the second verse
(variety).
• Please play softly on this section (dynamics).
• Play faster in this section (tempo).
• I would like to hear this section exactly as it is in
the recording (imitation).
We can work with other instruments that accompany
the choir in the same way. Always stress the importance
of the text. In practically every rehearsal I remind the
accompanists that we all “sing” in the choir. When everyone understands that we sing through our instruments,
the sound of the group changes immediately.
Battle of the Percussionists
What a dilemma! The following is a true story. One time
I was invited to give a workshop to a Hispanic choir that
had three percussionists. One of them had been playing
the congas in the choir for approximately twenty years
and knew only three rhythms: merengue, slow merengue,
and fast merengue. The second had been playing the
bongos in the choir for about ten years and simply followed the lead of the conga player.
During the workshop, I quickly recognized a problem
with the third and newest percussionist, who had his own
ideas about how the rhythms were to be played. I can
only describe the situation—half joking, half seriously—as
a battle! There are times in which, even after explaining
everything to our groups, we need an outsider to help us
put everything in perspective. I have had this need many
times in working with my groups.
In the end, the situation was easily resolved by taking the entire choir to the church and spending time in
front of the tabernacle. There I served as a moderator.
By making prayer the center of our conversation, they
all had an opportunity to express themselves and to be
sincere with one another. They talked about the vision
and the mission of the group, restated the importance of
attending rehearsals, and talked about each person’s role
in the group and its importance. The three percussionists
expressed their frustrations and agreed to work together.
As I mentioned before, the success of the group is not
based on being territorial (especially with the new member) and resisting new ideas. On the contrary, success is
achieved by working together for the good of the entire
community.
The Guest Conductor
A while ago I had a person in the choir who was determined to argue against everything I said. If I said white,
this person said black. If I said tomorrow, he suggested
the day after tomorrow. For a few months, I worked under
a lot of stress trying to avoid a confrontation and concentrating on the work at hand. Finally, one day, the inevitable
happened. I said everything I should have said from the
very beginning: “There is only one conductor and these
are the rules of the game.” In all honesty, the best solution
for some problems is to pull them out like a weed in order
to protect the stability of the group. After that incident, one
choir member approached me and said something I will
never forget: “The choir has been waiting for you to take
action on that for a long time. Thanks for giving us back
our stability.”
The development of our choirs is in our hands. Let us be
consistent, working tirelessly and keeping our goals in
mind. The situations shared in this article, some of them
described with a little humor, could be similar to ones you
have had. It is important for you to know that you are not
alone. In the journey from general to specific, these and
many other things can happen, but we have to step up
and face these challenges.

pasado. Durante unos cuantos meses trabajé con mucha tensión tratando de evitar una confrontación y concentrarme
en el trabajo que tenía que hacer. Un buen día sucedió lo
esperado. Entre otras cosas, le dije todo lo que debí decir
desde el principio: “Sólo hay un director y así son las reglas
del juego…”. Con toda honestidad, hay problemas que se
deben arrancar de raíz, con el fin de proteger el bienestar del
grupo. Nunca olvidaré que después del incidente un miembro del coro me dijo: “Desde hace mucho tiempo, el coro
estaba esperando que enfrentaras la situación y actuaras.
Gracias por devolvernos la estabilidad”.
En nuestras manos está el desarrollo de nuestros grupos.
Seamos congruentes, trabajando con tesón y con la meta en
la mira. Las situaciones aquí compartidas pueden ser similares a las que ustedes viven. Algunas pueden plantearse
de una manera jocosa, pero lo importante es saber que no
son los únicos. En el trayecto de lo general a lo específico

Se llama “salmos” a los 150 cantos poéticos bíblicos del
libro del Salterio, expresión de la fe y de la oración del pueblo de Israel, que los cristianos han tomado como suyos ya
desde la comunidad apostólica. Fueron creados por autores
anónimos—aunque el libro judío con frecuencia los atribuye, entre otros, a David, Asaf y Coré—en el período que va

Psalms
The Greek word psalmos and the Latin psalmus come
from the verb psallo, to lightly touch the strings of an
instrument, the “lyre,” causing them to vibrate, as David
did to calm the spirit of Saul (1 Samuel 16:16–23).
We use the term “psalm” to refer to the 150 poetic biblical songs in the Book of the Psalms, an expression of the
faith and prayer of the people of Israel, which Christians
have taken as their own ever since the time of the
apostolic community. They were created by anonymous
authors—although the Jewish book frequently attributes
them to, among others, David, Asaph, and Korah—during
the period from the tenth to the fifth century before Christ.
They may be poems or prayers created by one person or
perhaps out of the liturgical framework of the synagogue
or of the Temple, all of them later taken into worship and
included in the Psalter. Their numbering in the Hebrew
Psalter differs from that employed in the Latin one used
in our liturgy, depending on how some psalms or parts of
psalms are divided or joined.
They are divided into very different literary genres:
penitential, royal, of personal or communal lamentation, of
victory, hymns of thanksgiving, of pilgrimage, etc. There
appears within them a faith made up of praise and supplication, of personal and community situations, of lamentation and victory, of meditative reflection and protest, of
trust and desperation, and always with a deep religious
feeling. The psalms, sung poems, are considered to be a
literary and spiritual treasure of Israel and of all humanity, a
vibrant portrait of the life and the feelings of humanity and
its relationship with God. The psalms are “the masterwork
of prayer in the Old Testament” (Catechism of the Catholic
Church 2585; cf. 2585-2589, “The Psalms, the prayer of
the assembly.”)
In the New Testament, the Psalms were understood
to be a prophetic proclamation fulfilled in Christ, as Jesus
himself affirmed when he explained to the disciples who
had come from Emmaus what the psalms said about him
(cf. Luke 24:44). The “Christologization” of the psalms
began from the very beginning: to the original literary or
historical meaning of the poems, there was added a fuller
meaning, praying them as being totally fulfilled in Christ
and his Church, and they were prayed from that perspective. At times, they were “Christologized” from “on high,”
as when the Church directs to Christ the praise that the
Israelites directed to God (for example: “All you peoples,
clap your hands.... God mounts his throne amid shouts of
joy,” prayed on the day of the Ascension and referring to
Christ); or it can come from “below,” as when the psalms
are put into the mouth of Christ himself, addressed to his
Father (“My God, why have you abandoned me?”). In the
first case, they are spoken as “the voice of the Church,”
and in the second, as “the voice of Christ.”
All the liturgical families, especially in the Liturgy of
the Hours, use the psalms to make up a substantial part
of their prayer. “In the Liturgy of the Hours the prayer of
the Church is in large measure in the words of those
great hymns composed under the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit by sacred writers of the Old Testament” (General
Introduction to the Liturgy of the Hours [GILH] 100). “Yet
the Holy Spirit, under whose inspiration the psalms were
written, is always present by his grace to those who use
them with faith and good will” (GILH 102).
“The psalms are ... properly called tehillim (songs of
praise) in Hebrew and psalmoi (songs to be sung to the
lyre) in Greek” (GILH 103). “Often the words of a psalm
help us to pray with greater ease and fervor, whether
in thanksgiving and joyful praise of God or in prayer for
help in the depths of suffering” (GILH 105). “In keeping
to the meaning of the words, the person who prays the
psalms is looking for the human value of the text for the

prays the psalms in the Liturgy of the Hours prays not so
much in his own person as in the name of the Church,
and, in fact, in the person of Christ himself” (GILH 108),
being aware “of their total meaning (sensus plenus), especially their messianic meaning ... fully revealed in the New
Testament” (GILH 109).

En el Nuevo Testamento, los Salmos fueron entendidos como un anuncio profético cumplido en Cristo, como
Él los presentó cuando a los discípulos de Emaús les fue
explicando lo que decían de Él los Salmos (Cfr. Lucas 24,
44). Sucedió ya desde el principio, la “cristologización” de
los Salmos: al sentido literario o histórico original de los
poemas, se añadió el sentido pleno, rezándolos como cumplidos plenamente en Cristo y en su Iglesia, y se rezaron
desde esta perspectiva. A veces, se cristologizaban “por
alto”, cuando la Iglesia dirige a Cristo la alabanza que los
israelitas dirigían a Dios (por ejemplo: “pueblos todos,
batid palmas... Dios asciende entre aclamaciones”, rezado
en el día de la Ascensión y aplicado a Cristo), o bien “por
bajo”, cuando los salmos se ponen en boca del mismo
Cristo, dirigidos a su Padre (“Dios mío, ¿por qué me has
abandonado?”). En el primer caso se dicen como “voz de la
Iglesia”, en el segundo, como “voz de Cristo”.
Todas las familias litúrgicas, sobre todo en la Alabanza
de las Horas, hacen de los Salmos una parte sustantiva
de su oración. “En la Liturgia de las Horas, la Iglesia
ora sirviéndose en buena medida de aquellos cánticos
insignes que, bajo la inspiración del Espíritu Santo, compusieron los autores sagrados en el Antiguo Testamento”
(Instrucción General de la Liturgia de las Horas [IGLH]
100). “El Espíritu Santo, bajo cuya inspiración cantaron
los salmistas, asiste siempre con su gracia a los que, creyendo con buena voluntad, cantan estas composiciones
poéticas” (IGLH 102).
Los Salmos son composiciones poéticas de alabanza,
llamados en hebreo Tehillim, o sea, cánticos de alabanza,
y en griego Psalmoi, es decir, cánticos de alabanza que
se entonan al son del salterio (Cfr. IGLH 103). “Con las
palabras de los salmos podemos orar con mayor facilidad
y fervor, ya se trate de dar gracias y alabar a Dios en el
júbilo, ya de invocarlo desde lo profundo de la angustia”
(IGLH 105). Adhiriéndose al sentido de las palabras, “el
que recita los salmos fija su atención en la importancia del
texto para la vida del creyente” (IGLH 107). Pero además
“recita los salmos en la Liturgia de las Horas en nombre de
todo el cuerpo de Cristo, e incluso en nombre de la perso13 na del mismo Cristo” (IGLH 108), prestando atención “al
sentido pleno de los salmos, en especial al sentido mesiánico… que se reveló plenamente en el Nuevo Testamento”
(IGLH 109).
La Constitución sobre la Sagrada Liturgia estableció
que se distribuyeran los salmos, no en una semana, como
se había hecho al menos desde san Benito, sino en un
período de tiempo más largo, y que se llevara a cabo el trabajo ya iniciado de la revisión del Salterio (Sacrosanctum
Concilium 91). Y en efecto, el libro reformado, aparecido
en 1971, de la Liturgia de las Horas, estableció que el
Salterio se rezara en cuatro semanas. La introducción a este
libro (IGLH) enumera las dificultades que el cristiano de
hoy puede encontrar en el rezo de los salmos, los elementos que ayudan a rezarlos mejor (antífonas, títulos, frases,
oraciones sálmicas), los varios modos de salmodia, los
criterios de su distribución en los varios tiempos y horas, la
posibilidad de su sustitución por otros salmos, la importancia de su canto, y demás.
En la misa aparece el salmo sobre todo como canto
responsorial después de la primera lectura. También puede
rezarse como canto de entrada o de comunión.
Hay otras celebraciones en que determinados salmos
tienen sentido muy especial: en las exequias (salmos 113,
“Cuando Israel salió de Egipto” y 117, “Den gracias al
Señor porque es bueno”); en la celebración de la Penitencia
(salmo 50, “Misericordia, Dios mío, por tu bondad”).

Vatican II decreed that the psalms not be distributed
over the course of a week, as had been done at least
since the time of Saint Benedict, but over a longer period
of time, and that the already begun revision of the Psalter
be completed (Sacrosanctum Concilium 91). And, in
effect, the revised book of the Liturgy of the Hours, which
appeared in 1971, decreed that this Psalter be prayed
over four weeks. The introduction to this book (GILH)
enumerates the problems that the Christian of today
will encounter in praying the psalms, the elements that
help one to pray them more effectively (antiphons, titles,
phrases, psalm prayers), the diverse types of psalmody,
the criteria for their distribution among different seasons
and hours, the possibility of substituting other psalms, the
importance of their being sung, etc.
Within the Mass, the psalm appears above all as the
responsorial psalm after the first reading. It can also be
prayed as the entrance song or at Communion.
There are other celebrations in which specific psalms
have a very special meaning: for funerals (Psalm 114/113,
“When Israel came forth from Egypt,” and 118/117, “Give
thanks to the Lord, for he is good”); at the celebration of
penance (Psalm 51/50, “Have mercy on me, God, in your
goodness”), and others.

Ritual Suggestions
Sundays of Advent
The liturgies and feasts celebrated during Advent are filled
with anticipation and hope for a new world, and they invite
us to unique and profound reflection. The advent wreath
that we use in our churches and homes “reminds us that
Jesus Christ came to conquer the darkness of sin and
lead us into the light of his glorious kingdom” (Book of
Blessings 1525). This may be blessed on the first Sunday
of Advent. Keep in mind that the Bendicional from Mexico
proposes the blessing “after the initial greeting, in place of
the penitential rite” while the Book of Blessings from the
US places it after the general intercessions. To promote
prayer, encourage families to use this symbol in their
homes. Misal del Día includes a “Rite for the Blessing of
the Advent Wreath” in the home (MD-101, ocp.org/md). A
good resource to assist in prayer in the home is Palabra,
Vida y Fe (SH-101LC, ocp.org/palabra).
Vestment color for Advent is violet, since Advent is
traditionally a penitential season; however on the third
Sunday the color rose may be used to emphasize joy.
Since there are only four Sundays in Advent, consider
using the same song to accompany the entrance procession and be sure that this song is strong enough to “open
the celebration, foster the unity of those who have been
gathered, introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the
liturgical season or festivity, and accompany the procession of the priest and ministers” (General Instruction of
the Roman Missal 47). Consider using the little-known
second form of the penitential rite for all the Sundays of
Advent. The Gloria is not sung during Advent (except on
solemnities like the Immaculate Conception). The Roman

la luz y la vida triunfarán sobre las tinieblas y la muerte”
(Bendicional, 1237). Ésta se puede bendecir el primer
domingo de Adviento. Tengan en cuenta que el Bendicional
de México propone la bendición “después del saludo inicial,
en lugar del acto penitencial” mientras que el Book of
Blessings de Estados Unidos (EE.UU.) lo sitúa después de
la plegaria universal. Recomienden a las familias usar este
símbolo en sus hogares para fomentar la oración en casa. El
libro de devociones, Palabra, Vida y Fe, puede guiarlos en la
oración (SH-101LC, ocpenespanol.org/palabra). En Misal
del Día también pueden encontrar el “Rito de la Bendición

En el Adviento se usan las vestiduras y adornos de
color morado, puesto que tradicionalmente es un tiempo
de penitencia; pero el tercer domingo se puede usar el rosa
para enfatizar la alegría. Como sólo hay cuatro domingos
15 de Adviento, pueden usar el mismo canto para la procesión
de entrada; sin embargo, que sea un canto digno de “abrir
la celebración, fomentar la unión de quienes se han reunido,
elevar sus pensamientos a la contemplación del misterio del
tiempo litúrgico o de la fiesta, y acompañar la procesión de
sacerdotes y ministros” (Ordenación General para el Misal
Romano, 47). Aunque menos conocido, también se puede
usar el formulario 2 del acto penitencial. Los domingos de
Adviento no se canta el Gloria. El Misal Romano mexicano
tiene dos opciones para el prefacio (Adviento I y III) hasta
el 16 de diciembre y dos para usar del 17 al 24 de diciembre
(Adviento II y IV). Como es tiempo de penitencia, se puede
usar la Plegaria Eucarística sobre la reconciliación II. Existe
una bendición solemne para Adviento que se puede emplear
los cuatro domingos.
El Adviento es un tiempo adecuado para la celebración
comunitaria del sacramento de la Reconciliación con varios
confesores. El Ritual de la Reconciliación nos propone un
modelo para este tiempo. También pueden iniciar la práctica
de la oración de vísperas de la Liturgia de las Horas una vez
por semana con canto. La colección Mi Boca Proclamará Tu
Alabanza ofrece arreglos bilingües para los salmos y cánticos
(OCP 20447LC). Ambas celebraciones se prestan para
integrar a las comunidades multiculturales pero requieren

La Inmaculada Concepción
y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
La solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción, el 8 de
diciembre, cae en martes este año y es fiesta de guardar,
puesto que es la patrona de este país. El color del vestuario
litúrgico es el blanco. Se canta el Gloria y se reza el Credo.
En el propio de los santos para esta fecha se encuentran la
oración colecta, la oración sobre las ofrendas, el prefacio y la
oración después de la Comunión. Pueden usar la bendición
solemne para la Santísima Virgen.
El 12 de diciembre se celebra la fiesta de Nuestra Señora
de Guadalupe. Las oraciones específicas se encuentran en el
propio de los santos aunque, si usan la edición mexicana del
Misal Romano, es recomendable adaptar la frase indicada
en la oración colecta. Hoy se canta el Gloria, pero se omite
el Credo. Pueden usar el común de Santa María Virgen 4:
tiempo de Adviento. Entre los prefacios para la Santísima
Virgen María, pueden elegir, por ejemplo, el III, María,
modelo de la Iglesia; el IV, María, signo de consuelo y de
esperanza; y el V, María, imagen de la humanidad nueva,

Since this is a penitential season, Eucharistic Prayer for
Reconciliation II seems like a good option. There is also a
solemn blessing for Advent that you may use on each of
the four Sundays.
Advent is also an opportune time for communal celebration of the sacrament of penance with several confessors. The Rite of Penance proposes a model for this
season. Also, consider initiating the practice of evening
prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours once per week with
song. The collection Mi Boca Proclamará Tu Alabanza/
My Mouth Will Proclaim Your Praise (OCP 20446LC, ocp.
org/20446LC) provides Spanish, English, and bilingual
musical settings of the psalms and canticles. Both of the
above-mentioned celebrations lend themselves to joining
communities of different languages but require a serious
and pastoral preparation. We recommend the document Multicultural Celebrations: A Guide/Celebraciones

Immaculate Conception
and Our Lady of Guadalupe
The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December
8 falls on a Tuesday this year and is a holy day of obligation, since she is the patroness of the US. The liturgical
color of vestments is white. The Gloria is sung and the
creed is recited. One can find the collects and the preface
in the proper of saints. You may use the solemn blessing
for the Blessed Virgin Mary.
On December 12 we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady
of Guadalupe. The proper prayers for this feast are found
in the proper of saints, although if you use the Mexican
edition of the Roman Missal we recommend that you
adapt the phrase in the collect that makes specific reference to Mexico. Today we sing the Gloria, but the creed is
omitted. You may use the common of the Blessed Virgin
Mary 4: Advent. Among the prefaces for the Blessed
Virgin Mary, you may choose from III, Mary, model of the
church; IV, Mary, sign of consolation and hope; and V,
Mary, Image of the new humanity (note that these prefaces are not fond in the US Sacramentary but are merely
translations of those found in the Mexican Roman Missal)
together with Eucharistic Prayer III. You may also use
Eucharistic Prayer V/b with its own preface.
Both of these celebrations present us with occasions to
gather the multicultural community to worship as one. You
will have to plan all the details in anticipation, especially if
you are using various languages. In many parishes, the
Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe is customary. Palabra,
Vida y Fe provides prayers for each of the days.
The Christmas Season
The Christmas season begins with vespers on the 24th of
December and concludes with the feast of the Baptism of
the Lord. It is filled with symbols that we customarily love
to place in our environment. For example, in our churches
and homes we display a nativity scene for our devotion
because it brings to mind the mystery that we celebrate.
Similarly, the symbol of the Christmas tree filled with lights
teaches us “that Christ is the true Tree of Life, Tree from
which humanity was separated because of the sin of
Adam” (Bendicional 1272).
The Nativity of the Lord
There are four forms of prayers and readings for the
Christmas Masses: Vigil Mass, Mass at Midnight, Mass
at Dawn, and Mass During the Day. It would be a good
idea to use form C of the Penitential Rite. The Roman
Missal presents us with three options of invocations
(not the US Sacramentary). The Gloria is sung and during Midnight Mass it is customary to ring bells while it is
sung. On Christmas during the recitation of the creed all
kneel at the words “and became man.” There are various
preface options from which to choose; the Roman Canon
(Eucharistic Prayer I) is recommended with its special
form for Christmas. The Solemn Blessing for Christmas
is beautiful and contains wonderful images of the mystery
we celebrate.
It is important to pay attention to the non-verbal elements of the season. The environment should include lots
of candles and lights to remind us that the “true light of the
world” is in our midst (Opening Prayer, Mass at Midnight).
Rehearse the entrance procession with banners, candles,
and incense. Ensure that there are sufficient ministers of
hospitality to welcome the faithful at the door. Prepare the
servers beforehand with any special instructions for these
celebrations. Choirs should sing well-known carols during
the liturgies to encourage participation of the assembly.
Midnight Mass provides a good opportunity to unite
the diverse cultural communities of the parish. The traditional and well-known Christmas carols with translations
in English and Spanish (and other languages) will prove
most helpful. Since in many parishes this may be one of
the most attended liturgies, it would be good to prepare
a vigil service (lessons and carols) based on the Office

El tiempo de Navidad
El tiempo de Navidad, que comienza con la víspera del 24
de diciembre y va hasta la celebración del Bautismo del
Señor, está repleto de símbolos que acostumbramos colocar
en nuestro entorno. Por ejemplo, en el templo y en nuestros
hogares ponemos un nacimiento para nuestra devoción
porque nos ayuda a recordar el Misterio que celebramos. El
árbol de Navidad lleno de luces nos enseña “que Cristo es
el verdadero Árbol de la vida, Árbol del que fue separado el
hombre a causa del pecado de Adán.” (Bendicional, 1272).
La Natividad del Señor
Hay cuatro formularios de oraciones y lecturas para las
misas de la Natividad del Señor (la Misa vespertina de la
vigilia, Misa de la noche, Misa de la aurora y Misa del día).
Podemos usar el formulario tercero del acto penitencial;
el Misal Romano nos presenta tres posibles invocaciones
para el tiempo de Navidad. Se canta el Gloria y en la Misa
de la noche es costumbre tocar las campanas mientras se
canta. En las misas de Navidad, durante el rezo del Credo
se pide arrodillarse durante las palabras: “y por obra…”.
Hay varios prefacios que se pueden utilizar; se recomienda
el Canon romano (Plegaria Eucarística I) que lleva sus
propias intercalaciones de la Navidad. La Navidad tiene una
hermosa bendición solemne, con sus imágenes del Misterio
que celebramos.
Es importante ponerle atención a los detalles no verbales
del tiempo. La ambientación debe incluir bastantes velas y
luces para recordarnos que la “verdadera luz del mundo”
está entre nosotros (oración colecta, Misa de la noche).
Ensayen las procesiones de entrada, con estandartes, velas
e incienso. Hagan todo lo posible por tener suficientes
ministros de hospitalidad que reciban en la puerta a los
feligreses. Preparen de antemano a los acólitos con sus
instrucciones especiales para estas fiestas. Los coros deberán
cantar villancicos conocidos durante las celebraciones de la
Navidad para animar el canto del pueblo.
La Misa de gallo o de medianoche es una buena
oportunidad para integrar a las comunidades multiculturales.
Los cantos tradicionales de Navidad conocidos con sus
traducciones al inglés y español serán muy útiles. Si
17 ésta es la Misa más concurrida, sería bueno preparar una
especie de vigilia basada en el oficio de lectura tomado
de la Liturgia de las Horas con cantos, salmos, lecturas,
silencio y oraciones con la participación del pueblo. Antes
de la Misa, se puede proclamar el Elogio de la Natividad
de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo por un diácono, un cantor o un
lector. Ésta se puede descargar del sitio web del Obispado:

La Sagrada Familia
y la Octava de Navidad
La fiesta de la Sagrada Familia, el domingo, 27 de
diciembre, celebra a Jesús, José y María como la familia
ideal y nos la presenta como ejemplo que debemos seguir.
Después de la homilía se puede incluir una bendición de las
familias presentes con peticiones por las familias separadas.
También se puede utilizar ésta, tomada del Bendicional,
para la bendición final. Utilicen el Prefacio de Navidad III
con la Plegaria Eucarística III o, si lo prefieren, el Canon
romano (I). Éstas son buenas opciones durante toda la
octava de Navidad. Recuerden que se canta (o se dice) el
Gloria durante toda la octava.
La octava de la Navidad termina celebrando a María bajo
el título de la Madre de Dios (el viernes, primero de enero).
Esta solemnidad lleva sus oraciones propias; se recomienda
el Prefacio de la Santísima Virgen María I, Maternidad
de la santísima Virgen María, con el Canon romano y sus
intercalaciones propias de la Navidad. Pueden incluir en
la oración de los fieles peticiones por la paz en el mundo
y usar como oración conclusiva la oración colecta 24: “Al
comienzo del Año Civil”, tomada de las misas por diversas
necesidades del Misal Romano. Aún es Navidad; continúen
con los cantos navideños.
La Epifanía y el Bautismo del Señor:
las manifestaciones
La Epifanía del Señor es una celebración importante
(solemnidad) durante el tiempo de Navidad. Usamos el
Prefacio de la Epifanía, que contiene una breve pero buena
explicación de la doctrina de esta solemnidad. Podemos
usar el Canon romano con las suyas propias. También se nos
presenta una bendición solemne para la Epifanía. Recuerden
usar incienso en la procesión de entrada, en el Evangelio, en
las ofrendas y sobre el pueblo. Utilicen los cantos conocidos
de los reyes magos.
Con la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, el domingo, diez
de enero, concluye el tiempo de Navidad. Celebramos la
manifestación de la vida pública de Jesús. En lugar del
acto penitencial se puede usar el rito de la aspersión con

The Holy Family
and the Christmas Octave
The feast of the Holy Family on Sunday, December 27,
celebrates Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the model family
and presents us with an example to follow. After the homily a blessing may be offered for those families present,
with petitions for families that are separated for diverse
reasons. You may also use the Blessing of a Family from
the Book of Blessings as a final blessing. Use the preface
for Christmas III with Eucharistic Prayer III or the Roman
Canon (I). These are good options during the whole of
the octave. Remember that the Gloria is sung (or recited)
during each day of the octave.
The octave of Christmas concludes on Friday, January
1, with the celebration of Mary under the title of Mother of
God. This solemnity has its own prayers; we recommend
you use the preface Blessed Virgin Mary I: Motherhood of
Mary, with the Roman Canon (I) with its special form for
Christmas. In the general intercessions you may want to
include a petition for peace in the world and perhaps use
as a closing prayer the collect from (24) the Beginning of
the Civil Year, taken from Masses and Prayers for Various
Needs and Occasions from the Roman Missal. It is still
Christmas so keep singing Christmas songs.
Epiphany and the Baptism
of the Lord—the Manifestations
The Epiphany of the Lord is a major celebration (solemnity)
during the Christmas season. We use the preface for this
solemnity, which contains a brief but excellent catechesis
for this celebration. We can use the Roman Canon (1)
with its special form. There is also a solemn blessing for
this solemnity. Remember to use incense in the entrance
procession, the Gospel, the gifts, and over the people.
Use the well-known Epiphany songs.
With the feast of the Baptism of the Lord on Sunday,
January 10, the Christmas season comes to a close. We
celebrate the manifestation of the public life of Jesus. In
place of the penitential rite, consider using a sprinkling
rite with baptismal water accompanied by an appropriate
song. This feast has its own preface that expresses clear-
ly the images of the baptism of Jesus, while reminding us
of our own baptism and mission that we share through
him. This is the last opportunity to sing carols and see the
Christmas decoration adorning the church.
Ordinary Time, The Presentation
of the Lord, and other popular feasts

After the overflowing joy of the Christmas season celebrations, it is a good idea to return to the simple forms that
we have used prior to Advent, such as the penitential rite,
the simple, sung acclamations, the blessing, and dismissal. As we begin Ordinary Time we are presented with the
opportunity to teach the liturgy within the homily. There are
good resources available for planning and catechesis in

and commentaries that are most useful. Also, on the

documents that will prove indispensable to help us in the
liturgical formation of our faithful at all levels.
The Presentation of the Lord, commonly known as
Candlemas, traditionally ended the season of Christmas
in times past. In many communities it is customary to
bring candles from home for blessing. The rite presents
us with two forms to begin the celebration. The first
includes a procession and blessing of the candles; the
second option includes a solemn entrance with a blessing. This feast has its own collects and preface. The
Gloria is sung and the creed is recited. Eucharistic Prayer
III is a good option. Many communities follow the custom
of taking the figure of the baby Jesus (from the nativity
scene used at home) and presenting it for a blessing at
the end of this liturgy.
On January 15 the Guatemalans celebrate Blessed
Jesus Christ, Our Lord of Esquipulas; on January 21
the Dominicans celebrate their patroness, Our Lady of
Altagracia; on February 2 the Venezuelans celebrate their
patroness, Our Lady of Coromoto; and on February 3 the
Hondurans celebrate Our Lady of Suyapa.

La Presentación del Señor, conocida también como
“Fiesta de la Candelaria”, tradicionalmente concluía el
tiempo de Navidad. En muchas comunidades se acostumbra
traer velas para bendecirlas. El ritual nos presenta dos formas
para iniciar la celebración. La primera incluye una procesión
y bendición de las velas; la segunda es una entrada solemne
con la bendición. Esta fiesta tiene sus propias oraciones y
prefacio. Se canta el Gloria y se reza el Credo. Usen la Plegaria

I Domingo de Adviento

Jesús anuncia que nuestra liberación está cerca, pero no
sabemos ni el día ni la hora. Hemos escuchado este mensaje
del cumplimiento de la promesa del Señor desde el tiempo
de Jeremías. “Vivan como conviene, para agradar a Dios”,
nos recuerda el Apóstol; debemos estar dispuestos. Nuestra
condición dispuesta se encuentra en la oración del Salmista
al elevar diariamente nuestra alma al Señor y al caminar
en su senda, conociendo su verdad, y nombrándolo como
nuestro Salvador.
La oración del Salmista se puede enfatizar propiamente
cuando prestamos atención y esfuerzo a la forma preferida
de interpretar el salmo, es decir, cantándolo enteramente en
forma responsorial. Las composiciones musicales expresivas nos permiten meditar plenamente en el texto mientras
se canta. Los salmos y aclamaciones de cada domingo y
solemnidad se encuentran en la publicación Responde y
Aclama (RS-101LC, CD: 21066LC).
Jesus said that our redemption was at hand, but he did
not give a day or an hour. We have heard the message
of the fulfillment of God’s promise ever since the days of
the prophet Jeremiah. Our readiness can be found in the
prayer of the psalmist: daily lifting our souls to the Lord
and walking in his path, knowing his truth and naming him
as our Savior.
The psalmist’s prayer can receive the necessary
emphasis when attention is given to the preferred form
of rendering the psalm, namely, singing it in its entirety
in responsorial style. Expressive musical settings allow
us to meditate more fully on the text as it is sung.

Las imágenes de las Escrituras proporcionan un buen
marco para celebración del Rito de Aceptación en el
Catecumenado. Juan, habiendo recibido la Palabra de Dios,
evangelizaba, proclamando un bautismo, no de agua, sino
de arrepentimiento. San Pablo habla de una asociación con
el Evangelio, el cual será el sustento para los catecúmenos y
candidatos en los meses venideros. Por medio de la Palabra,
crecerán en conocimiento y en toda percepción del Señor.
Llevarán, no una mitra, sino la marca de su salvación, la
señal de la cruz trazada en sus sentidos. “El Señor ha estado
grande con nosotros y estamos alegres”: éste es el canto que
repite la comunidad cristiana por tener a los simpatizantes
que se unirán a la Iglesia.

The Scriptural images in these readings form a backdrop for a celebration of the Rite of Acceptance into the
Catechumenate. Having received the word of God, John
went about “evangelizing”—proclaiming a baptism not of
water, but of repentance. Saint Paul speaks of a partnership in the Gospel that will nourish catechumens and
candidates for months to come. Through the word, they
will grow in knowledge and perception of the Lord. They
will bear the mark of their salvation in the sign of the cross
traced on their senses. The Christian community sings of
the great things God has done by bringing these seekers
to be joined to the Church.
Today’s feast is one of the six holy days of obligation in
the liturgical calendar; it is ranked as a solemnity. How
do we celebrate a solemnity? With a full complement of
liturgical ministers, whose ministries speak to the day’s
importance. The priest and/or deacon, two readers, a
cantor, perhaps a choir, a strong instrumentalist (organ,
piano, or guitar), sufficient extraordinary ministers of Holy
Communion for the gathered community, ministers of
hospitality, and altar assistants—all these contribute to the
community’s celebration of the purity of the Mother of God
in an appropriate liturgical environment.

Esta fiesta es designada como solemnidad. ¿Cómo se celebra una solemnidad? Ciertamente, con la presencia de un
grupo de ministros litúrgicos laicos, además del sacerdote

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe has been designated as the
Patroness of all the Americas, not only for people of
Hispanic descent but also for all who live on these
continents. The traditional “Mañanitas” (FCII 718) are
sung to the Blessed Mother, either to begin Mass or to
conclude it; the celebration is usually held before sunrise. A re-enactment of the apparitions of Guadalupe
should precede or follow the liturgical celebration, rather
than replacing the proclamation of the Gospel. To
include both English and Spanish language communities, consider using a bilingual responsorial psalm and
a bilingual setting of the eucharistic acclamations. The
Magnificat is an appropriate selection for this feast.
Two recently published settings of the Magnificat are
available in Adviento (Jaime Cortez, OCP 20247LC)
and Mi Boca Proclamará Tu Alabanza/My Mouth Will
Proclaim Your Praise (Pedro Rubalcava, OCP 20447LC).
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ha sido designada como
la Patrona de todas las Américas, no sólo para el pueblo
hispano, sino para todos los habitantes del Continente
Americano. Se le cantan las “Mañanitas Guadalupanas”,

celebración que se lleva a cabo antes de amanecer. Una

antes de iniciar la celebración eucarística; o bien, después

III Domingo de Adviento
An entire worshipping assembly singing together makes
a shout of joy and gladness that springs from the knowledge that God is among us. God’s presence is evident
when we clothe the poor from our abundance and feed
the hungry from our overflowing pantries, when we work
for economic justice, even for the poorest of the poor,
and when we do honest work for an honorable wage.
Our musical texts may be those that answer the Gospel
question, “What should we do?” This music deepens our
experience of the Holy Spirit, and moves us, with fire in
our hearts, to leave this place to do the works of mercy,
of peace, of kindness.
La asamblea entera, unida en el canto, puede representar el
grito de gozo y alegría que exclamamos porque sabemos
que Dios está con nosotros. La presencia de Dios es evidente cuando, de la abundancia que tenemos, vestimos a los
pobres y damos de comer a los hambrientos; cuando trabajamos por la justicia social y cuando trabajamos honradamente por un sueldo honorable. La pregunta del Evangelio,

IV Domingo de Adviento
Advent is full of Marian images. At face value, the Gospel
tells of an encounter between Mary and her cousin
Elizabeth. But beneath the surface, the encounter is
between the children in their wombs—Jesus encounter-

God, was blessed for believing that the word of the Lord
would be fulfilled in her. We might ask ourselves, “Are we
completely open to the will of God in our lives? Do we
allow God to fulfill his promises in us?”

Los recuerdos de la niñez nos recuerdan la celebración
navideña comenzando a media noche. Aparte de las lecturas
indicadas para esta Misa, el Leccionario nos presenta otras
lecturas que amplían nuestro entendimiento del nacimiento
de Jesús. Las lecturas de la misa vespertina contienen
imágenes difíciles de entender para los niños especialmente: “Abandonada, Desolada, Me Gusta, Desposada”.
Generalmente, la celebración parroquial de la misa vespertina es para beneficio de las familias con niños pequeños.
Por eso se puede elegir la forma breve del Evangelio,
omitiendo la genealogía entera de Cristo y narrando sólo el
acontecimiento de su nacimiento. Estas lecturas requieren

Many recall when the Christmas celebration always began
at midnight or shortly before. Besides the readings given
for Midnight Mass, the Lectionary provides readings that
expand our understanding of Christ’s birth. These Vigil
Mass readings have images difficult for the young and
not-so-young to grasp: “Forsaken, Desolate, My Delight,
Espoused.” Typically the parish celebration of the Vigil
Mass is for the benefit of families with very young children;
hence the short form of the Gospel is chosen, omitting
the whole genealogy of Christ and going directly to the
narration of his birth. These readings, if selected, require
strong preaching skills that strongly connect these particular texts to the birth of Jesus.
La Natividad del Señor: Medianoche
La misa vespertina proclama el evangelio según san Matéo,
y la misa de medianoche, el evangelio según san Lucas. Es
interesante que en la oscuridad de la media noche, las imágenes proféticas son de luz que desvanece la oscuridad, y

At the Vigil Mass the Gospel according to Matthew is proclaimed, and the Gospel according to Luke is proclaimed
at Midnight Mass. It is interesting to note that at midnight,
during the darkest part of the night, the prophetic images
are those of light dispelling darkness, gloom giving way to
joy. Consider preparing musically for this night’s liturgy by
listening to the corresponding parts of Handel’s Messiah,
particularly the setting of the texts Wonder-Counselor,
God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. This uplifting
music can help us to select and present the simplest of
Christmas carols in an expansive, majestic way.

Fíjense en el uso del tiempo presente en las Sagradas
Escrituras: “ya llega tu Salvador”, “nos ha nacido” (en lugar
de “vendrá” o “nacerá”). Es importante reconocer que la

momento presente, en su Palabra y en la Eucaristía, por

Notice how the Scripture passages use the present
tense: your Savior comes (not will come); the Lord is born
for us (not will be born); light dawns for the just (not will
dawn). It is important to recognize that Christ’s coming
was not merely a historical event to be told and retold, but
rather that Christ’s coming is in the here and now, in word
and in Eucharist, and through God’s spirit, even through
one another. Christ will come again in glory at the end of
time as we proclaim in song in the memorial acclamation
during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Our hymn selections
should echo the “now” of salvation.

For this daytime celebration, as for the Vigil Mass, we
sense a dearth of images of the birth of Christ. The
Scriptures for this Christmas Day liturgy focus on good
news, on salvation, on redemption, on vindication. The
psalmist sings of the saving power of God, and John the
Evangelist speaks of the Word of God (Verbum Divinum)
existing from the beginning, and becoming flesh, and
dwelling among us. Christmas images are to be found in
the hymns and carols selected for this liturgy. However,
the beautiful image of the Word of God should not be
passed over lightly. At least one of today’s musical selections should include this image.

Today’s readings tell similar stories of young children
in the temple. From his infancy, Samuel is taken by his
mother Hannah to dwell in the house of the Lord. Jesus
too, lost to his earthly parents for three days, is found by
Mary in the temple among the elders. He “must be in his
Father’s house.”
John refers to us as children of God. While we do not
make the Church our physical home, our spirits remain
with God and we dedicate our lives to God. This is an
appropriate day to dedicate our own families to the Lord.
See the Book of Blessings for the blessing of families,
which can take place at each Mass.
Hoy las lecturas contienen historias parecidas de niños en el

Santa María, Madre de Dios
Within a month’s span, we celebrate the third solemnity of
the liturgical year (Immaculate Conception and Christmas
are the other two.) The second reading and Gospel speak
of Mary as Mother of God, but only the Gospel mentions her by name. Since it is still within the season of
Christmas, the images of Christ’s birth, the manger and
the shepherds continue. While we might be inclined to
keep singing the standard Christmas carols and hymns,
musical selections can have more of a Marian focus
today. Many contemporary Marian songs point to the Son
in the same manner as the readings themselves.

año litúrgico que celebramos. La segunda lectura y el
Evangelio de hoy hablan de María como la Madre de Dios,
pero sólo el Evangelio menciona su nombre. Puesto que
todavía estamos dentro del tiempo de la Navidad, todavía
tenemos las imágenes del nacimiento de Cristo, el pesebre
y los pastores. Aunque nos sintamos inclinados a seguir
cantando los himnos y villancicos navideños, la selección
de himnos puede tener hoy un carácter mariano. Muchos

La Epifanía del Señor
Today’s first reading provides images for the liturgical
environment: splendor, light, radiance. Rather than letting
the Christmas season fade toward its conclusion, we
build to a radiance that draws us further into the mystery
of this Christ child. One of the gifts of the Magi to the
infant Jesus was incense. We might burn some incense
in the church 15–20 minutes prior to each Mass so that
our senses, too, are drawn into this feast. The psalmist
sings, “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.” Invite
parishioners of different cultures and ethnicities to wear
native dress and become part of the opening procession
or the procession with the gifts for Eucharist.

Cambiamos de enfoque: del pesebre a la fuente bautismal.
Mientras que se prefiere una fuente bautismal distinguida y
permanente, lo importante no es la fuente en sí misma, sino
el agua dentro de esa fuente, quizá agua que fluye. Debe ser
agua pura y abundante. Hoy es apropiado emplear el Rito
de Aspersión, en lugar del acto penitencial al comenzar
la misa. También es apropiado usar la Renovación de las
Promesas Bautismales en lugar del Credo Niceno. Si hay
en su parroquia candidatos para la plena Comunión, no
es necesario esperar hasta la Pascua para recibirlos en la
Iglesia, si ya están listos. Hoy es buen día para celebrar su
plena Comunión con la Iglesia católica.
The focus shifts from the Nativity scene to the church
baptismal font. While a prominent and permanent font
is desirable, the importance is not so much in the font
itself, but rather in the water that fills the font—perhaps
flowing water. It should be clear and plentiful. On this day,
it is appropriate to make use of the sprinkling rite instead
of the penitential rite at the beginning of Mass. It is also
appropriate to use the renewal of baptismal promises in
place of the Nicene Creed. If they are ready now, candidates for full communion need not wait until Easter to be
received into the Church.
II Domingo Ordinario

Hoy comenzamos a oír los milagros que hizo Jesús durante
su ministerio público. En una boda, vemos los primeros
signos de su ministerio, que aumentaban la fe de sus discípulos. San Pablo nos habla de los dones espirituales que
se han dado a todos, y del mismo Espíritu que hace todo
eso. Hoy es buen día para llamar (invitar) a los feligreses
a su propio ministerio público llenos del Espíritu de Dios.
Una vez más, el Bendicional contiene las bendiciones para
los diversos ministerios y éstas se pueden celebrar en las
misas parroquiales. En una misa se bendicen los ministros
litúrgicos, en otra, los ministros de catequesis, en otra, los
ministros de pastoral social.
Today marks the beginning of the miracles performed by
Jesus in his public ministry. With a wedding feast as the
backdrop, the signs he performed increased the faith of
the disciples. In the second reading, Saint Paul speaks of
spiritual gifts given to all, but the same Spirit who performs
them. On this day parishioners can be invited into their
own public ministry filled with the Spirit of God. The Book
of Blessings offers blessings for various ministries; these
can be celebrated at the various parish Masses. At one
Mass, bless liturgical ministers; at another, catechetical
ministers; at another, social ministers, etc.

La primera y segunda lectura son muy largas y presentan
un desafío a los lectores. Sin preparación cuidadosa, las
lecturas pueden parecer sin objeto determinado. La segunda
lectura aparece en una forma más corta, pero muchas imágenes se pierden si elegimos esta forma.
Meditemos lo siguiente: “Hoy se cumplen estas profesías que acaban de escuchar”. Jesús hace esta proclamación
y todos los presentes escuchan y tienen los ojos fijos en Él.
¿Qué implica esta frase para el lector y para la asamblea que
escucha y que recibe esa proclamación? Se le da vida a la
palabra de Dios, se cumple, por medio de la proclamación
que debe ser hecha con cuidado.
Lectors are challenged today, as both the first and second readings are lengthy. Without careful preparation,
the readings can seem to ramble. The second reading
appears in a shorter form, but many images are lost if the
short form is selected.
Ponder this: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled
in your hearing.” Jesus proclaimed this in the synagogue,

¿Por qué un profeta nunca es aceptado(a) en su propia tierra? Ser profético no significa predecir el futuro, sino hablar
la verdad del Evangelio que nos desafía a actuar con justicia. Cuando nos encontramos ante el predicamento de llevar
un mensaje difícil, busquemos primeramente al Señor para
refugiarnos en Él. El Señor es nuestra defensa y seguridad,
nuestra roca. Esta celebración eucarística nos debe conducir
de nuevo al mundo para proclamar con valentía a nuestra
sociedad lo que es justo y recto en los ojos de Dios, arriesgándonos a que nos pongan en ridículo o nos rechacen.

Why are prophets never accepted in their own land?
(Don’t kill me; I’m only the messenger.) Being prophetic is
not about predicting the future, but rather about speaking
the Gospel truth that challenges all to act justly.
When we have to deliver a difficult message, let us first
turn to the Lord for refuge. The Lord is our stronghold and
safety, our rock and fortress. This eucharistic celebration should lead all of us back into the world to boldly
proclaim to our society that which is just and right in the
eyes of God, even at the risk of being ridiculed, shunned
or shamed.
La Presentación del Señor
This is the day on which all the candles used in the
Church are blessed. Traditionally people gather outside
the church for the procession associated with this celebration. The assembly is given unlighted candles; the
presider and other ministers wear white; and the greeting
and blessing of candles takes place outside following the
prescribed prayer in the Sacramentary. This feast comes
forty days after Christmas, and it calls to mind the early
life of Jesus and some significant developments in the
Christian community. Take a cue for planning this liturgical celebration from the rich prayer for the blessing of
candles.

utilizarse en la iglesia. Tradicionalmente, la gente se reúne
fuera del templo para la procesión. La asamblea recibe
velas apagadas; el presidente y otros ministros se visten de

Even though we are all called to be evangelizers by our
baptism, nevertheless we can organize a specific ministry
of evangelization within the parish. The Lord asks, “Whom
shall I send? Who will go for us?” Can we be ready to
answer, “Here I am, send me!”? Through evangelization
we can “put out into the deep” like the disciples and
“lower our nets for a catch.” We are to “catch” men and
women and bring them to God. Music ministers can
pay special attention to the texts they sing Sunday after
Sunday. Through Scriptural texts joined to music, musicians join the ministry of evangelization.
Todos hemos sido llamados a evangelizar por nuestro
bautismo. Podemos organizar un ministerio específico de
evangelización en nuestra parroquia. Cuando el Señor nos
pregunta: “¿A quién enviaré? ¿Quién irá de parte mía?”

Today we hear the Beatitudes: Blessed are you who….
We also hear the woes, that is, those who live lives
devoid of blessing, fully satisfied in this earthly life, with no
need for God. The prophet Jeremiah also contrasts a life
that is cursed with one that is blessed. Those who trust
and hope in the Lord, as the prophet urges, receive the
strength to bear what most consider misfortunes in this
life: poverty, hunger, sorrow, hatred or prejudice, marginalization, insults. Those who are fully satisfied in this life
have nothing to look forward to in the next, the resurrected
life with Christ.
Hoy escuchamos las Bienaventuranzas: “Dichosos ustedes
los que…” También escuchamos las penas de los que viven
donde faltan bendiciones, y aun así, están completamente
satisfechos en esta vida terrestre, sin necesidad de Dios.
El profeta Jeremías presenta un contraste entre una vida
condenada y una vida bendecida. Si esperamos confiadamente en el Señor, como lo anuncia el profeta, recibimos

level. She is president of the Hispanic division of the National Association of
Pastoral Musicians (NPM) and is a member of the steering committee for the
Southwest Liturgical Conference (SWLC) and the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical
Commissions (FDLC). Dolores received a doctorate in fine arts from Texas Tech
University in Lubbock, specializing in piano and harpsichord performance. For
many years, she was the director of the Office of Worship for the Archdiocese of
San Antonio.

Sus raíces culturales
y formación musical
Jaime nació en marzo de 1963, en Nueva York. Su madre
trabajaba como asistente del embajador de El Salvador
en las Naciones Unidas, Nueva York. “Por esa razón mis
padres vivieron en Nueva York, aproximadamente 7 años.
Luego nos fuimos a El Salvador, donde crecí y, finalmente,
regresé para vivir en Arizona cuando tenía 18 años”.
Sin duda, el ritmo de su música viene de su sangre latina.
“Mis padres son salvadoreños y amantes de la música y el
arte en general. Aunque no son músicos, les gusta mucho

I
n every part of the US where the Mass is celebrated in
Spanish and bilingually, assemblies recognize songs
like “Somos el Cuerpo de Cristo/We Are the Body of
Christ,” “Water of Life/Agua de Vida,” and “Acogemos,
Señor, Tu Mensaje de Amor/Embrace and Echo Your
Word.” And they recognize the composer of these songs,
Jaime Cortez.
His most recent collection, Adviento, received the
2007 Unity Award for Best Spanish Album of the Year.
It’s a collection of Marian hymns, psalms, and litanies with
a contemporary sound written specifically for Advent (CD
20246LC; accompaniments 20247LC). All of us at Liturgia
y Canción are pleased to present Jaime’s guitar/vocal
arrangement of “Mi Alma Glorifica al Señor (Magnificat),”
with text based on Luke 1:46–55 (see pages 28–29 in

Jaime’s dynamic personality and seemingly neverending energy have made him work hard to create quality music for the liturgy and to promote good use of the
Spanish language in the liturgy. For him, being Catholic
is everything, and it shows in all his activities. Parishioners
at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Mesa, Arizona, sing with
Jaime and his family—his wife, Kari, and their sons, Daniel,
Nicholas, and Benjamin—at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass.
Cultural Heritage and
Musical Formation
Jaime was born in March of 1963 in New York City, where
his mother worked as assistant to the ambassador of El
Salvador at the United Nations. “Because of that my parents lived in New York for about seven years. After that we
went to El Salvador, where I was raised, and I ended up
back in the States, in Arizona, when I was eighteen.”
Without a doubt, the rhythm of his music comes from
his Latin blood. “My parents are from El Salvador and love
music and art in general. Even though they’re not musicians, they like singing at home a lot and have always
liked buying records. I remember there was always something playing on the record player at home.”
The composer grew up enjoying the richness of that
time. “When I was little, I listened to a lot of different music:
Pedro Infante, Agustín Lara, Los Panchos, Elvis Presley,
The Beatles. There were lots of different genres and my
parents exposed me to others. These influences shaped
me when I began guitar lessons when I was thirteen.”
His lessons were with Cándido Morales. “Cándido had
studied with the great Agustín Barrios Mangoré, a famous
guitarist from Paraguay. Later I studied guitar at Arizona State
University, though I ended up switching to theory and composition because I felt that would give me more flexibility in
the type of work I could get, and I focused on piano.”
His studies in theory and composition gave him the
opportunity to learn to play other instruments. “I learned
to write arrangements for instruments I didn’t play and I
even wrote my own music. At the same time, I started to
play at the university’s Catholic church and realized how
helpful it is for a pastoral musician to have a background
in formation.”
Jaime has composed a number of Spanish and
bilingual songs for the liturgy. OCP has published his
music collections Qué Alegría/I Rejoice; Rain Down;
Sacramentos; Somos el Cuerpo de Cristo/We Are the
Body of Christ, a joint effort with well-known composer
Bob Hurd; and Cantaré Eternamente/For Ever I Will Sing,
a compilation of psalm settings by various composers.

El compositor creció disfrutando la riqueza musical de la
época. “Cuando era pequeño escuchaba una gran variedad
de música: Pedro Infante, Agustín Lara, Los Panchos, Elvis
Presley y los Beatles. Eran diversos estilos musicales, y mis
padres me enseñaron a conocer otros autores. Con esta influencia inicié mis clases de guitarra a la edad de 13 años”.
Su formación musical se inició tomando clases con
don Cándido Morales. “Él había sido estudiante del gran
Agustín Barrios Mangoré, famoso guitarrista paraguayo.
Luego estudié guitarra en la Universidad Estatal de Arizona
y finalmente me cambié a teoría y composición, porque
sentí que esto me daba más flexibilidad en el tipo de trabajo
que podía conseguir y decidí estudiar piano”.
Los estudios de teoría y composición musical le dieron
la oportunidad de aprender otros instrumentos. “Aprendí a
escribir arreglos para instrumentos que no tocaba y a escribir mi propia música. Al mismo tiempo, empecé a tocar
en la iglesia católica de la universidad y a reconocer el
valor intrínseco de la formación que debe tener un músico
pastoral”.
Durante su camino como músico pastoral Jaime ha
compuesto muchos cantos en español, inglés y bilingües

“Que se rellenen todos los valles hasta aplanar la tierra, para
que Israel camine seguro bajo la gloria de Dios…El Señor
guiará a Israel en medio de la alegría y a la luz de su gloria,

Rejoice, Jerusalem, and be glad! The glory of God will shine
upon you. The mountains and valleys will become a level
plain. “God is leading Israel in joy.”

Una gran señal apareció en el cielo: una mujer, vestida del
sol, con la luna bajo sus pies y una corona de doce estrellas
sobre su cabeza.

Apocalipsis 11, 19; 12, 1–6. 10
Apareció en el cielo una señal prodigiosa: una mujer,
envuelta por el sol y su recién nacido. Un monstruo enorme
se plantó frente a ellos, listo para devorar al niño. El hijo
fue llevado hasta Dios y hasta su trono. La mujer fue puesta
a salvo en el lugar que Dios preparó para ella.
A great sign appeared: A woman clothed with the sun and
her newborn child. Great danger faced them, but God took
them to a place of safety: “The woman herself fled into the
desert where she had a place prepared by God.” A loud
voice sounded from heaven: “Now have salvation and
power come, and the Kingdom of our God and the authority
of the Anointed.”

Jerusalén será la gloria de las naciones y brillará como una
antorcha entre todos los pueblos. El Señor se complacerá en
esta tierra y, a su vez, Jerusalén hará las delicias de su Dios.
God’s city Jerusalem will shine forth like the dawn. The
Lord delights in Jerusalem. God rejoices in the people of the
great city as a groom rejoices in the bride. The Lord God
will protect and vindicate the people of Zion.

Un niño nos ha nacido, un hijo se nos ha dado. La insignia
del poder está sobre sus hombros y se le llamará Ángel del
Gran Consejo.

El Señor derramó su esplendor por todo el mundo.
¡Gritemos gozosos y estallemos en cantos! La Buena Nueva
de paz ha llegado.
The ends of the earth will see God’s salvation. Break forth
together in song, Jerusalem, for the good news of peace
has come. God redeems Jerusalem and gives comfort to
all people.

Hebreos 1, 1–6
En el pasado, supimos de Dios solamente por medio de las
palabras de los profetas. Ahora conocemos a nuestro Padre
por medio de su único Hijo. Jesús es la representación
exacta de la presencia del Padre, nacido para que todo el
mundo lo vea.
“In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our
ancestors through the prophets,” but now we have God’s
own heir, the glory of the Lord who sustains all things. Let
all angels worship God’s first-born, God’s heir, God’s son.
Nos ha amanecido un día sagrado; vengan, naciones,

Inmediatamente después de que Jesús se bautizó, se

Isaías 62, 1–5
Como el joven que se casa con una muchacha virgen, así
el Señor desposará a Israel. Su tierra tendrá un esposo y ya
no la llamarán “Abandonada”. Israel, pues, será una corona
preciosa en manos del Señor.
As a young man marries a virgin, so the Lord will marry
Israel. No longer will she be called “Forsaken,” for she
is now the precious one of God and will be called “My
Delight.”

There is one Spirit from whom come many gifts. Each person
is given a different gift to use for the common good. We are

alaben, porque es infinita tu misericordia.
PRIMERA LECTURA
Malaquías 3, 1–4
“Entrará en el santuario el Señor, a quien ustedes buscan”,
dijo Malaquías. El Señor enviará a su mensajero a preparar
el camino. Malaquías profetizó: el Señor será como “un
fundidor que refina la plata”.
The prophet Malachi prophesied that the Lord God will send
a messenger “to prepare the way.” The Lord will appear at
the temple, and God will “refine and purify” the people.

Con un carbón encendido, un serafín limpió los labios de
Isaías y borró su pecado. Cuando el Señor llamó, Isaías
contestó: “Aquí estoy, envíame”.
Isaiah received a call from the Lord. With a burning coal
his lips were cleansed and his sin removed. When the Lord
asked for a messenger, Isaiah replied, “Here I am, send me!”

Pablo exhortó a sus seguidores a permanecer fieles al

al tercer día. Pablo se considera “indigno de llamarse
apóstol”. El Señor lo bendijo con una gran misión.
Paul urged everyone to remain faithful to the gospel he

Jesus boarded Simon Peter’s boat and told him to cast his
net for a catch. Simon and his friends caught enough to fill

men, they left all to follow him.
