is OuR GReAt PLeAsuRe to present the 2011 PathStone
Corporation Annual Report. As you review this report, we believe you will
be impressed with the impact we have made in the lives of the nearly
88,000 individuals we served last year in economically depressed
communities in seven states and Puerto Rico. We are grateful for the
hundreds of community organizations, businesses and volunteers with
whom we have partnered.

Thank you for your patience with us as

In 2011, the PathStone Board of Directors, together with senior leadership
staff, entered into a major review of PathStone’s organizational structure.
Over the next few years, several long-term leadership staff and veteran
board members will be transitioning to retirement. As an organization, we
are committed to ensuring that the solid foundation we have built
throughout the last 43 years continues to be a vital and important
mission-driven resource to the families and communities we serve.
The theme of our internal assessment is “One PathStone." As our lines of
business—which you will learn more about in this report—have grown to
encompass new programs in more communities, we need to ensure that
we are able to take full advantage of all of our resources. With careful
attention to detail, we are working diligently to review our organizational
chart, analyze our range of services, assess the educational and training
needs of our staff (now nearly 600 strong), and create a governance
structure to guide our organization into the future.
While we are actively engaged in an internal capacity-building analysis,
we find that there is an unprecedented demand for our services. For
every service we offer, the need is greater than the resources we have
available. Our staff is comprised of creative problem solvers who all work
tirelessly to assist each and every person who looks to us for assistance.
We are extraordinarily thankful for the network of hundreds of
community partners—private, corporate and public—that rallies behind
PathStone each year; we are grateful for our partners’ trust and
confidence in our ability to successfully meet measurable and meaningful
goals. Our external environment is severely challenged by the struggling
economy, uncertainty in funding, and political ambivalence that inhibits
the availability of critical resources to help people break the cycle of
poverty. We are dedicated to ensuring that our services remain relevant
resources to our participants during this time.
We invite you to donate, volunteer and network with us, and to refer
families in need of services. We especially appreciate receiving your best
advice on how we can continue to make a difference in the lives of
those we serve.

E
Especialmente

As a seasonal worker on a farm,
iLsOn ORtALAtín OLón
came to PathStone’s office in Hatillo, Puerto Rico eager to find stable, full-time
employment. He attended PathStone’s Job Readiness Training and was
introduced to the Pacific Institute’s PX-2 training. Wilson was placed at the
National Parks Company of Puerto Rico at Rio Camuy Caverns and completed
320 hours of work experience as a tour guide. One of the requirements of
the position at the park was the ability to communicate in English to tourists.
Wilson was not very comfortable with his English language skills and noted
each time he was corrected by someone. After seeing how dedicated Wilson
was to improving his English speaking skills, the tourists began helping him
with his pronunciation. Wilson quickly became one of the most requested
tour guides at the park,
giving him a great
deal of confidence.
Still employed fulltime at Rio Camuy
Caverns, Wilson
spends his free time
volunteering for the
park and maintaining
the reception area’s
plants and gardens.
He is thankful for the

An eager student, biGAiL iGbY graduated from PathStone’s Family
Self Sufficiency (FSS) program in Middletown, NY ahead of schedule. Through
the FSS program, Abigail was able to increase her household income so that
she no longer needs the Section 8 rental assistance she depended upon each
month. While enrolled in the program, she worked full-time with challenged
adolescents, adopted two young boys and studied diligently for a degree in
theology. Abigail exceeded all of the goals that she set at the beginning of
the program. She now has her sights set on being a homeowner; she
completed two PathStone homeownership programs and is saving money
for a down payment on her own home!

propia casa!

Center in Liberty Center, OH with her family in the middle of Ohio’s
agriculture season. Coming from Texas, and arriving after most farmworkers
had already found work and lodging for the season, Ms. Garza had no place
to stay and had difficulty finding a job. Through the Migrant Rest Center,
PathStone provided the family with emergency food and transportation
assistance until Ms. Garza was able to find work. Once the family’s
emergency needs were met, PathStone worked to further ease the family’s
transition to life in Ohio; Ms. Garza was given referrals to PathStone Health
and Safety programs that she and her family were eligible for, and she
received additional assistance finding agricultural work while in Ohio.

L A S RA . G ARZA ,

realized her life was spinning out of control,
so she placed her children with a trusted relative and sought refuge at Park
Ridge Hospital for in-patient services. Sober, but homeless, Valarie was
accepted into Sojourner House in Rochester, NY. Over the course of eight
months, and with the help and support of Sojourner staff, Valarie continued
on her journey of recovery and was able to establish a support network. She
moved into a three-bedroom apartment supported by Sojourner House staff,
and is eager to reunite her family and be the mother she always wanted to
be. “Sojourner House has helped me learn so much about myself. I would
not have made it this far without Sojourner and I am grateful,” says Valarie.
She plans to get her driver’s license and go back to school, and is enjoying
her peaceful and happy life.

she was at a very high risk for type II diabetes. Wanting to regain her health,
Salud joined PathStone’s Promotoras de Salud (Health Educator) program in
Liberty Center, OH. She worked with a promotora and was educated on selfmanagement, diet and exercise. Through diet and lifestyle changes, Salud
lowered her risk for the disease and began promoting the program within her
community. Soon she was assisting the program in its outreach efforts by
introducing PathStone staff to community members and organizing prevention
education meetings. Salud has made a tremendous impact in the well-being of
her community by modeling healthy positive behaviors and connecting her
neighbors to community resources. PathStone is grateful for Salud’s passion
and dedication and is happy to count her as an honorary promotora!

ith heavy hearts, and a
profound sense of loss, we said goodbye to
two very important members of the
PathStone community in 2012.
Velma Wright served on the Board for more
than 35 years, serving many terms as
chair-person. She was a strong, powerful
advocate for social justice.
