19th Sunday in Ordinary Time † August 7, 2016
“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Luke 12:34
A Word from the Pastor ...
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
It was quite surprising last Sunday, while greeting parishioners after Mass, to be told by a young man, who graduated
from St. Peter’s School and continues to serve as an altar-server, that this week he will be leaving for his first semester
at the Catholic University of America. In the coming days and weeks, in fact, a number of our young people will be
either beginning life in college, or will be returning after their summer break. I know that for many parents, this brings
with it mixed feelings: while they are happy to see their children grow up, having opportunities that probably were not
available to them when they were younger, they are also saddened to see them spend so much time away from home.
This is especially the case with those students who will be leaving home to reside on a college campus, or even study
overseas.
I think that it is heartening to see that most universities - Catholic or not - have a vibrant Catholic campus ministry,
which seeks to provide “a home away from home” to the young people attending college. While I have seen many students practically lose their faith while at college, I have met several others whose faith has grown tremendously while
pursuing higher education. And in most cases, it was thanks to an active campus ministry which has helped the young
people to crave for the real happiness, ask deep-seated questions, and find the true answers in the teachings of the
Church. The enthusiasm at the just-concluded World Youth Day in Poland is a case in point: so many young people
today, having tasted luxury and a comfortable life-style, realize that emptiness will prevail in their lives until they experience the Joy of the Gospel.
Please encourage any young person you know who is about to move to college to make sure they enquire about the
Campus Ministry – many times known as the Newman Center – at the college they are about to attend. In case there is
no Catholic ministry on campus, they are to be encouraged to contact a nearby Catholic parish where they could at the
least participate in the Sunday Eucharist and frequent the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The Archdiocese of Newark’s Campus Ministry provides pastoral care to thousands of students attending several secular colleges in Northern New Jersey, namely Rutgers-Newark, UMDNJ, Essex County College, NJIT, Montclair State
University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Ramapo College, Fairleigh Dickinson University and New Jersey City
University. Visit its website for more information about their activities: www.ccm-nj.com. One can also visit the website of the Newark Newman Center, which caters mostly to students attending the Newark campuses
(www.NewmanClubNewark.org).
As can be imagined, there is also a very active presence on Catholic campuses. Students who attend Seton Hall University, for example, know that they can bank on the presence of a sizeable number of priests who live on campus and
make themselves available for the needs of the students. Holy Mass is celebrated several times a day, with ample opportunities throughout the week for scheduled confessions. Students are also encouraged to participate on volunteer
and missionary activities which help them see beyond their own needs and comforts. Other Catholic Universities in
New Jersey include Felician College, the University of St. Peter and Caldwell College. These colleges, too, enjoy an
active and vibrant campus ministry. If you or someone in your family will be attending a university not listed above
and wish to enquire about Campus Ministry, you can contact the Archdiocese of Newark Campus Ministry Office at
(973) 746-2323.
During the past year I have had the privilege of getting to know about the apostolate of “Saint Paul’s Outreach,” a vibrant campus ministry that sends youth to live full time on a campus and re-awaken the Faith of many of the students.
They are actively present at Seton Hall University.
Finally, let us ensure that our young people do not leave for college without taking with them a copy of the Holy Bible,
the Catechism of the Catholic Church, good reading material, and that powerful weapon against the Enemy … the Rosary!
A blessed Sunday to all

PRAY FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED
We kindly request your prayers for the repose of Gregorio
Rene Lopez & Alonso Villamarin. May the souls of all the
faithfully departed through the mercy of God, rest in
peace. Amen.
OFFERING MASSES FOR THE REPOSE OF SOULS IN PURGATORY
It is customary not only to visit the graves of our dearly departed, but
also to have Masses offered for the eternal repose of their souls. Having
a Mass offered for the repose of a soul, and offering our own prayers, is
more beneficial and comfor ng than a card or bouquet of flowers. From
the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC): “From the beginning the
church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in
suffrage for them, above all the Eucharis c sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may a ain the bea fic vision of God” (CCC #1032). Contact
the Parish Office to have a Mass offered for a soul who may need your
prayers to be released from Purgatory!
THE 2017 MASS BOOK IS NOW OPEN. VISIT THE RECTORY OFFICE TO
SCHEDULE MASSES FOR YOUR DECEASED LOVED ONES.

Pope Francis speaks at General Audience upon return from
World Youth Day in Poland
Pope Francis renewed his condemnation of the holocaust on Wednesday, and decried once again the persistent violence
in the world as a “piecemeal” world war. The Holy Father’s remarks came during the course of the General Audience –
the first since suspending the weekly appointment with pilgrims and tourists for the month of July, and the first since
his return from Poland and the 2016 World Youth Day in Krakow.
While in Poland, Pope Francis visited the extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau, where German National Socialists murdered a million European Jews (one in every six victims of Shoah perished at Auschwitz) as well as many
priests, religious and others who did not fit in the society they envisioned.
“The great silence of the visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau,” said
Pope Francis, “was more eloquent than any word spoken
could have been. In that silence I listened: I felt the presence of all the souls who passed through that place; I felt
the compassion, the mercy of God, which a few holy souls
were been able to bring even into that abyss. In that great
silence, I prayed for all the victims of violence and war: and
there, in that place, I realized more than ever how precious
is memory; not only as a record of past events, but as a
warning, and a responsibility for today and tomorrow, that
the seed of hatred and violence not be allowed to take root
in the furrows of history.”
Departing from his prepared text, Pope Francis went on to
recall the countless people – men and women, young and
old – who still today suffer as a result of war. “Looking
upon that cruelty, in that concentration camp,” he said, “I
thought immediately of the cruelties of today, which are
similar: not as concentrated as in that place, but everywhere
Pope Francis walks in into the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration in the world; this world that is sick with cruelty, pain, war,
Camp prior to meeting the Youth at the World Youth Day in Krakow.
hatred, sadness; and this is why I always ask you for the
prayer: that the Lord give us peace.”
Pope Francis’ visit to Poland also coincided with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the historic visit of Pope Saint John
Paul II following the fall of the Iron Curtain. “Poland, Europe and the world have changed greatly since then, but the
young continue to be a prophetic sign of hope for the future.” Describing the scene of hundreds of thousands of young
people from every corner of the globe waving the flags of their respective countries, Pope Francis said that the young
people formed a mosaic of fraternity and a joyful response to the challenge of the Gospel. “Poland, with its rich cultural
and spiritual heritage,” he continued, “today reminds us that Europe has no future apart from its founding values, centered on the Christian vision of man and including the message of mercy expressed so eloquently in the last century by
Saints John Paul and Faustina Kowalska.”
INTENTIONS OF THE HOLY FATHER FOR AUGUST 2016
Universal: Sports: That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between peoples and may
contribute to peace in the world.
Evangelization: Living the Gospel: That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty,
and love of neighbor.

reveladora o ajustada. Así que antes de salir
de casa, pregúntese: ¿mi atuendo da gloria
y honor a Dios? ¿Estoy ves do(a) adecuadamente para par cipar en la an cipación de la gloria del cielo?
