Dear Parents and Students, We are excited to announce the kickoff of our elective program which provides students with unique extracurricular opportunities beyond traditional learning experiences. The purpose of this program is to support 21st century skills which require student to work with others, create, and solve realworld problems. Electives will allow to explore new areas of interest or to study a particular area in depth. This program offers courses in the following disciplines: basic engineering, computer science, science studies, multimedia, and interdisciplinary studies. Electives have been designed to include all grade levels and multiple topics. Electives will take place on Friday mornings, from 8:009:00 a.m. and each elective will last approximately 7 weeks. Students will be able to signup for a different elective during the third registration

period in April. The registration window opens on
Monday, April 4th and close Thursday, April 7th.
Third cycle of electives will begin on
Friday, April 15th..
Students will be able to register at school or from home. Electives will be capped to maintain optimum facilitatorstudent ratios, but we will do our best to honor first, second, or third choices. A lottery system will be used when there are more interested students than available seats to determine course rosters. To help us with this initial registration process,
please be sure to select three electives.

Estimados Padres y Estudiantes, Estamos muy contentos de anunciar el arranque de nuestro programa electivo que ofrece a los estudiantes oportunidades únicas extracurriculares más allá de las experiencias de aprendizaje tradicionales. El propósito de este programa es apoyar las habilidades del siglo 21 que requieren que los estudiantes trabajen con otros, creen y resuelvan problemas del mundo real. Engineering Ingeniería Advanced Lego Robotics (4th5th)
Facilitator: Ms. Elliott Students will follow construction schematics to build complex Mindstorm robots. After completing the suggested basic programming, students will explore and develop new tasks for the robots to perform. Students will work collaboratively in pairs to construct and program robots. Here is your chance. Help build the first ever Beaver Gaga Pit. North Garland High School students and teachers will be coming to Beaver to help students design and build a Gaga Ball pit. Students will measure, design, cut, drill and build using equipment from the construction industry. The Gaga Ball pit will be laser printed with all the names of the students who built it, so that everyone who ever uses it will know where it came from. “Gaga Ball Pit” (4to & 5to)

Robotics 101: We Do Lego Robotics (1st3rd)
Facilitators: Mrs. Gatton & Mrs. Fontaine This club is designed to capture students’ curiosity and direct it toward discovering how science, technology, engineering, and math impact the world around them. This club features a realworld challenge to be explored through research, critical thinking, and imagination. Students will work collaboratively in pairs to build motorized models made of LEGO elements using the MacBooks and will apply their knowledge of simple machines to create brief videos explaining the process. Teams will also create Lego movies using Movie Maker on the iPads. Robóticos 101: Hacemos Legos Robóticos (1ro3ro) Facilitadores: Sra. Gatton & Sra. Facilitator: Mr. Hill The VEX robotics class is designed to teach students about all four parts of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and use these to build and program their own robots. Battle of the Books (3rd5th)

Facilitators: Mrs. Marston & Ms.Osborne Do you love to read and compete? Battle of the Books will challenge your reading and creativity skills, as well as bring out your competitive side. Your team will have a list of four books to read that you will need to know inside and out! Each team will develop a creative product of their choice to represent the literary elements of the book. The more creative the project the more points awarded. The last two weeks will be the Battle of the Books smackdown! Teams will answer questions and compete for points to be the Beaver Battle of the Books Champion! Batalla de los Libros (3ro5to)

Advanced Coding: Looking for a chance to continue learning about coding with an actual programming language? This club will give you a chance to choose the language you would like to learn. Want to learn about cool techniques that scientists do to make materials and do them yourself? Now you can! Craft, build, and put your engineering side to the test with materials science and polymer chemistry taught in Minecraft. A mod from UTD called Polycraft World will show you the ropes in how materials are made today! You'll get a handson experience with materials, both ingame and in real life as we game and do live demos to connect ideas together. Play video games, get science. From fractions and percentages to predicting game strategies based purely off the mathematical and scientific aspect of sports. Students will use formulas and inferencebased decisions to predict probabilities, frequency distributions, graphs, and correlating gamechanging skills.
