Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
W
e aren’t fond of the words “humble” and “obedient.”
When was the last time you read an obituary saying the
deceased was a humble and obedient person? No, we tend to list
degrees, titles, achievements, and so on. By all accounts Jesus was not
successful in the way we generally mean it. He had enough education
to be able to read the scriptures in the synagogue (Luke 4:16–20), and
he was just a village carpenter by trade, trained by Joseph. He came
from Nazareth, not an important city like Jerusalem. Jesus wandered
around the countryside preaching, following in the tradition of Jewish
prophets. The crowds were mostly ordinary people, not the rich and
the powerful. A moment of apparent triumph came on Palm Sunday, when the crowds in Jerusalem
acclaimed him as king. Many were probably hoping he would be a new military leader who would
overthrow the Romans occupying the land, and restore Jewish life and pride. This “triumph” was
brief. In a few days the same crowds turned on him in bitter rejection. He wasn’t what they wanted.
Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, didn’t know what to make of him. Jesus was obviously no
common criminal. He spoke with truthfulness and was not cowed by Pilate’s power. Yet to keep the
rabble quiet, Pilate finally washed his hands of the whole business and put Jesus to death. Ever since
that first Good Friday, those who pass through the darkest nights know they don’t go alone. For each
of us Jesus willingly entered the pain and sorrow of humanity. For us he allowed himself to fall into
the abyss of death. The Father let his Son count the milestones along the way of despair. There are
no dead-end streets anymore. For us, at the end of every road, there shines the light of Christ.

“The apostles said
to the Lord,
‘Increase our faith.”
(Luke 17:5)
A
s we enter into the last full week of Lent, this
simply phrased request of the apostles expresses the
deepest long of any spiritual person. Perhaps the
question was prompted by the apostles’ reaction to
Jesus’ detailed explanation of the kingdom of God that he had just presented to them. In parables (the Prodigal Son, the Shrewd Manager, the
Rich Man and Lazarus), in teachings (Carry Your Cross, Invite the Poor
and the Lame), and in healing (Cure on the Sabbath), Jesus laid out the
characteristics of the disciple. Perhaps the question was also prompted by
the upcoming trip to Jerusalem which Jesus had already stated would result in his death…and resurrection three days later.
For the disciples experiencing Jesus first hand,
and for the disciples of 2012, the need is the same—
greater faith. Lent is a time for us to focus on taming
the world inside each of us in order that the Kingdom
of God may be more present. It is a time of deepening faith. Soon on
Palm Sunday and Good Friday we join Jesus in Gethsemane, praying for
this same gift because he himself was ‘deeply troubled and in great distress.’ The answer for Jesus is the answer for us: ‘not my will but yours be
done.’ Jesus’ complete trust in Our Father sustained him throughout his
life, and it would guide him through his last hours. Jesus entered into his
Passion trusting in the loving will of his Father to give him the strength to
complete the saving act of redemption.
This is the source of greater faith for every disciple of every generation: doing the Father’s will. We pray for a deepening of our own faith,
even as we pray that the faith of the world will increase so that there will
be justice and peace for all people and among all nations.
OLF to host FAM’s Easter Breakfast
Family Assistance Ministries will hold its annual Easter Breakfast and Egg
Roll next Saturday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to noon in McGowan Hall. This
event is for the many families it serves throughout the year. You can support
this event by bringing a filled Easter basket or plastic eggs to FAM’s offices
at 929 Calle Negocio, Ste G. (Just off Pico and Amanecer) by April 2. For

tax preparation (closed April 7th)
April 14 will be the final weekend for tax preparation services at OLF. All households earning less than $49,000

“Los discípulos
dijeron al Señor,
aumente nuestra fe”
(Luc 17,5)
M
ientras entramos en la última semana completa de la Cuaresma, esta simple petición anunciada de
los apóstoles expresa la más profunda frase de cualquier persona espiritual. Quizás la pregunta estuvo
motivada por la reacción de los apóstoles a la explicación detallada de Jesús
del Reino de Dios, que sólo les había presentado a ellos en parábolas (el
Hijo Pródigo, el Administrador Astuto, el Hombre Rico y Lázaro,) en las
enseñanzas (cargar su Cruz, invitar a los pobres y los cojos), y en curaciones
(curar en sábado) con esto Jesús estableció las características del discipulado. Quizás la cuestión también fue impulsada por el próximo viaje a Jerusalén que Jesús haría, donde declaró que resultaría en la resurrección de su
muerte tres días más tarde.
Para los discípulos el experimentar de primera
mano lo que Jesús les competió y para los discípulos de
2012, la necesidad es la misma: mayor fe. Cuaresma es
un tiempo para centrarse en dominar el mundo interior
dentro de cada uno de nosotros a fin de que el Reino de
Dios pueda estar más presente. Es un momento para
profundizar en la fe. Pronto en el Domingo de Ramos y el Viernes Santo
nos uniremos a Jesús en Getsemaní, orando por este mismo don, porque él
mismo estaba "profundamente agitado y en gran angustia." La respuesta de
Jesús es la misma que debemos dar nosotros: 'que no se haga mi voluntad
sino la tuya'. La confianza completa de Jesús en el Padre Nuestro lo había
sostenido a lo largo de toda su vida, y le guiaría a través de sus últimas
horas. Jesús entra en su pasión confiando en la voluntad amorosa de su Padre para darle la fuerza para completar la obra de redención.
Esta es la fuente de mayor fe para cada discípulo de cada generación: hacer la voluntad del Padre. Oremos por una profundización de nuestra propia fe, oremos para que la fe del mundo aumente; para que haya justicia y paz para todas las personas y entre todas las naciones.

Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor
A
nosotros no nos gustan mucho las palabras “humilde” ni
“obediente”. ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que leíste un
obituario diciendo que el difunto era humilde y obediente? Más bien
tendemos a poner los títulos, logros y cosas por el estilo. Según
nuestros conceptos humanos, Jesús no fue un hombre con éxito.
Tuvo suficiente educación como para leer las Escrituras en la sinagoga
(Lucas 4:16–20) y era un carpintero de aldea entrenado por José. Se
crió en Nazaret, que no era una ciudad importante como Jerusalén.
Jesús iba por campos y pueblos predicando según la tradición de los
profetas judíos. Las multitudes estaban formadas mayormente por
personas sencillas, no por los ricos y poderosos. Un aparente momento de triunfo fue el Domingo de
Ramos cuando las multitudes en Jerusalén lo aclamaron rey. Es probable que muchos esperaran que
él fuera un nuevo líder militar que depusiera a los romanos que ocupaban el país y restaurara el
estilo de vida y el orgullo del pueblo judío. Este “triunfo” fue breve. Pocos días más tarde la misma
multitud se le reviró y lo rechazaron a muerte. Él no era lo que ellos querían. Poncio Pilato, el
procurador romano, se sentía confundido frente a Jesús. Obviamente no era un criminal común.
Hablaba con la verdad y el poder de Pilato no lo acobardaba. Sin embargo, para mantener calmada a
la muchedumbre, Pilato terminó lavándose las manos de todo y condenó a Jesús a muerte. Desde
ese primer Viernes Santo todos los que pasan por tiempos tenebrosos no van solos. Por voluntad
propia Jesús asumió el dolor y la angustia de la humanidad y de cada uno de nosotros. Por nosotros
bajó al abismo de la muerte. El Padre dejó que su Hijo venciera por el camino del dolor. Ya no hay
callejones sin salida para nosotros. Al final de cualquier camino brilla para nosotros la luz de Cristo.
