With this book the writer Soledad Galán is making her debut as a novelist. Hers is a novel approach to the life of Isabel II, a fictionalised autobiography filled with humour, eroticism and historical events. A combination that makes the tale hugely attractive for any reader who decides to delve into its pages. The book narrates in the first person the life of a woman as well as a queen of Spain, who made of love her purpose when hindered from exercising another one, that of governing. It is set in the historical context of the end of a Spanish era. It is perfectly described in the quote appearing in the book’s back cover: “With all the body’s urges that are not allowed a female, and even less a sovereign, I turned into a serpent woman. I could then have killed myself with a decoction of phosphor; however, I was not given to suicide. I, Isabel II of Spain, gave myself to everything and everyone. As a result of this, the Police Prefecture of Paris even kept a binder with the precise detail of the number and names of my lovers. To my great regret, there was an excess of fish. And a few were missing, not just two or three: some very vicious sharks. Men. They have made me go through hell from having loved them so much.” Expertise and capability characterise the trajectory of Botín Restaurant, which throughout its history has understood how to adapt to the habits of its clients, growing with them, changing without losing its essence or identity. Along the way theViña Salceda winery has been a trusty companion, and Salceda Crianza, the house wine, feels the pride of its past and of its promising future. This Rioja winery has also undergone a few changes. If it has been a while since you last tasted the Salceda Crianza, do not hesitate: you will be pleasantly surprised. The wine reflects all the goodness of Elciego, a prestigious wineproducing area that thanks to its unique vines, climate and soil is capable of offering us a heartening, friendly wine that is winning over the most demanding palates. Soledad Galán has kindly made several references to Botín in the pages of her book. Not surprisingly our house, owing to its antiquity, has been the silent witness of numerous historical events since it was founded in 1725: Tempranillo grapes, mature vineyards, a moderate climate, clay and chalk soil… Salceda is also the result of man’s work, both on the land and in the wine cellar. “…I told Francisco that we would go and down a few mouthfuls of red wine and some wood-fired mutton at Casa Botín…” The vineyards are painstakingly cultivated in the traditional manner: the soil is tilled instead of using any herbicide and the tasks, from pruning to harvest, are performed by hand, in a reasonable and sustainable way.The traditional and artisan production is based on preserving and revealing the qualities of the grape as carefully as possible. The goal: to make each one of the bottles of Salceda Crianza unique to contain the essence of Elciego. The best pairing for the heartwarming cuisine we prepare at Botín. “…They say that Botín’s roast mutton can trip hendecasyllables off your tongue…” Thank you very much, Soledad, for having remembered us. [The holidays are getting close and… Cava or Champagne: which is better?] Many Spaniards (and non-Spaniards) have set their sights on the 22nd of December. This has been a difficult year for many and by and large everyone has hopes of the Christmas lottery letting them have a “nibble” at the prizes. Queues outside the lottery shops and the exchange of lottery tickets between friends and relatives are a constant at this time of year. The origins of the Spanish Christmas Lottery go back to the time of the Cadiz Cortes, when it occurred to the minister of the Indies Council that it would be a way of increasing public revenue without penalising the taxpayers. The first draw took place on 18 December 1812, although the denomination of “Sorteo de Navidad” (Christmas Draw) did not arrive until 1892. As for the children of San Ildefonso, they have always been in charge of chanting out the numbers, even when they were printed on paper, since the system of rotating drums and balls was not brought in until 1913. The slogan for this year’s Christmas Lottery advertisement was again “The biggest prize is sharing”, an appeal to our feelings and generosity which this year had a touching animated character called Justino taking centre stage. This year’s draw will award the pretty sum of 2.24 billion euros in prizes. Early November saw the start in the Basque Country and Asturias of what is expected to be a good elver season. The season will end with the arrival of February. The season’s first captures sold at 6,230 euros per kilo, or what is almost the same… at more or less 6 euros per elver, although their price dropped for the next batches. It augurs well for this season though we cannot set bells a-ringing yet because, in order to certify the recovery of a species, an upward trend has to be observed over several years. For several years now both drinks have been competing on the market and cava has gradually been gaining ground in our country, but is French champagne better or is it Spanish cava instead? Elvers will be present on several Christmas tables, those that can afford them. Those that can’t will have to settle for an ersatz called gula, which is made from surimi and also tastes good but of course has nothing to do with elvers… The reality, whatever some may think, is that neither is better than the other. In champagnes there are good and bad ones and the same can be said of cava. Both have the same production process in common, but the climate, the vines and the soil in which they grow are very different. Elvers, or glass eels, are the juvenile form of eels, an oily fish captured off the coasts and in rivers when they have reached the age of 2 or 3 years. They are born in the sea, enter the rivers in their early years and return to the sea to reproduce. The soil in the Champagne region is chalky and rich in silica, while in the Penedés it is clay which predominates. Moreover, the climate in the Champagne region is Atlantic and continental, which means that owing to the low temperatures the grapes take longer to ripen and the harvest takes place as late as possible. In contrast, the Mediterranean climate is warmer and the Catalan region of Penedés favours the ripening of the grapes and makes cava less acid than champagne (to which, incidentally, many producers add sugars). In our country this exquisite product is prepared in an earthenware dish with garlic and chilli peppers. This is how we serve them in Botín … Another difference is that in France the Champagne designation of origin refers to a specific geographical region, whereas in Spain the term Cava refers to a production method and not to a region of origin. The truth is that, as the saying goes, there is no arguing in matters of taste and it is each one’s palate which must decide whether cava or champagne is better. In either case, let us raise a toast to a happy 2016. Cheers! Nieuws Botín Nachrichten Botín Notizie Botín Nieuws Botín Nyheder B We wish you all much luck on the 22nd, and if not, here goes the usual… “the important thing is our health”… and no less true for that. ● ● ● ●
