What an outstanding start
to our school year! September has been a dynamic month of instruction
and programming at the
Delaware Community
School.
This September we had
over 25 DCS students,
staff and family members
participate in the Latin Day
Parade. We were able to
showcase our Dual Language Program while enjoying the support of our
community. Special thanks
to Mrs. Militello and Mrs.
Banda-Wemple for organizing our march.
Our first ever Dads Bring
Your Child to School Day
was a colossal success
with over 80 fathers bringing their child into school
and sharing a special
breakfast with us. Special
thanks to Ms. Chavez for
coordinating this important
event with Mrs. DeNyse
and Ms. Lopez.
After breakfast, fathers,
mothers, families and
friends joined all students
and staff for a moment of
peace in accordance with
International Peace Day.
Our learning community
formed a giant circle on our
lawn and meditated on
what individual, local and
world peace means to us.
Special thanks to Mrs.
Fowler and Ms. Iorio for
making this event a reality.
Good food and a pronounced sense of community were shared with over
400 family and friends joining us for our annual Welcome Back Picnic. I
would especially like to
thank our entire Welcome
Back Picnic Committee
and to Mrs. Schiavoni, Mr.
Allah, Mr. Kearnan, and

was held at SUNY on October 5th. International
Family Math Night is Friday, October 15th from 6:00
p.m.-8:00 p.m. P.T.A. will
meet at 6:00 p.m. on October 19th (Pizza and Childcare included!). Our next
School Spirit Day will be
October 21st. P.T.A. Parent/Child Dance is scheduled for October 27th at
6:00 p.m.

Familias y Amigos de la Comunidad de “Delaware”,
¡Qué comienzo tan extraordinario
a nuestro año escolar! Septiembre
ha sido un mes dinámico de instrucción y programación en la
Escuela de la Comunidad de
“Delaware”.
En septiembre nosotros tuvimos a
más de 25 estudiantes de DCS, el
personal y los miembros de las
familias tomando parte en el Día
del Desfile de los Latinos. Pudimos representar a nuestro Programa Bilingüe mientras disfrutamos del apoyo de nuestra comunidad. Especial agradecimiento va a
la Sra. Militello y a la Sra. BandaWemple por organizar nuestra
marcha.
Nuestro primer “Padres traigan a
su niño/a a la escuela” fue existoso con más de 80 padres que
trajeron a su niño/a a la escuela y
compartieron un desayuno especial con nosotros. Especial
agradecimiento va a la Srta.
Chávez por coordinar este acontecimiento importante con la Sra.
DeNyse y la Srta. López.
Después del desayuno, los padres, las madres, las familias y los
amigos se unieron con todos los
estudiantes para compartir un momento de paz en concordancia con
el Día Internacional de la Paz.
Nuestra comunidad formó un círculo gigante en nuestro patio y
meditó acerca de lo que significa
la paz individual, en los medios
locales y en el mundo. Especial

Building Leadership Team
The Building Leadership Team (BLT) is currently working to develop a Comprehensive Educational Plan
(CEP) for Delaware Community School. Thus far, we have worked towards increasing the extent our membership reflects the diversity of our student body and community.
We meet on a monthly basis and operate as a shared decision making body. Our progress will be shared via
faculty and PTA meetings. This collaborative process is designed to engage all stakeholders in the educational success of our students.
Development of a CEP requires a systematic analysis of data and information including student needs, existing
school processes and improvement initiatives in order to determine how student achievement can be improved.
-We will review longitudinal and current student data and scientifically-based research;
assess the effectiveness of current instructional programs, discuss proposed modifications, develop
goals and objectives;
-Create action plans that translate into observable, effective strategies to improve student achievement.
El Equipo de liderazgo del edificio (BLT) trabaja para desarrollar un Plan integral de la educación (CEP) para
nuestra escuela. Hasta ahora, hemos trabajado para que nuestra composición reflejara la diversidad de nuestro alumnado y la comunidad. Nos reunimos una vez al mes y tomamos decisiones por consenso. Nuestro
progreso se compartirá a través de reuniones de la facultad y el PTA. Este proceso de colaboración tiene por
objeto hacer participar a todos los interesados en el éxito educativo de nuestros estudiantes.
El desarrollo de un CEP requiere un análisis sistemático de datos e información, incluyendo las necesidades
del estudiante, los procesos actuales de la escuela y las iniciativas de mejora con el fin de determinar cómo se

School Banking/La Banca de la Escuela
School Banking has gotten off to a great start this year with students depositing money
in the main office on Friday mornings. We are glad to see many new students opening
accounts with First Niagara and look forward to banking with them once they receive their account numbers from
First Niagara (the bank mails these to home.)

Ask the Reading Teachers
Over the years we have gotten questions from parents about the teaching of reading and writing. This year we
wanted to start off by helping families to expand their understandings of how reading works, explain classroom
practices that support all readers, and inform parents about expectations of what will come home throughout the
school year. We hope that you find this to be helpful! Happy Reading! -Mrs. Healy and Mrs. Groezinger
“What do I say when my child gets stuck on a word? I want to help. Do I just give her the word? Or say “sound it
out?”
First, stay relaxed. Don’t panic when she gets stuck. If you stay calm, your child will know that figuring out words
is part of the normal process of reading. We do want children to use their knowledge of letters and sounds, but
we want them to do that in combination with meaning and structural knowledge. In other words, we encourage
them to always think about what would make sense in that sentence, what would sound right, and what would look
right. There are just too many words in English that you can’t sound out by using phonics, like said, thought and
knife. Give them a little support by saying, “Hmm, what would make sense there? Or point to the picture. Sometimes going back and rereading the sentence from the beginning helps the child keep the meaning in her head, so
you could just tap the start of the sentence and say, “Try that part again.”
Another thing to think about is how your child is reacting when you give suggestions of what she could try. Some
beginning readers get very frustrated when working with parents; they want to do everything perfectly for you. If
she is experiencing too much frustration or is getting angry, just tell her the word she is struggling with. We’d
rather the experience you have with her while reading at home be a very enjoyable one. Don’t worry about the
teaching or the prompting. We’ll take care of that in the classroom. We will also check her book box to make sure
the books she is bringing home aren’t too hard. Having her occasionally problem solve a word is okay, but if there
are too many hard words, we’d rather you just read the book to her.

Dad’s Bring Your Child to School Day
On Tuesday, September 21, Dads and father figures were encouraged to participate in bringing a child to
school. At Delaware Community approximately 80 fathers participated in a breakfast that morning followed by
an activity to promote peace for International Day of Peace.
The New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) and the New York State Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance (OTDA) joined with our Delaware Community School to encourage participation in
"Dads Take Your Child to School Day."
According to Gladys Carrión, Esq., Commissioner of OCFS. "Studies show that when fathers and father figures
take an active interest in their children's education, youth do better in school, are better adjusted and more likely
to succeed."
"Fathers are a critical part of the family equation, and a father's involvement in a child's life can make a tremendous difference," said Kristin Proud, Deputy Secretary for Human Services, Technology and Operations, who is
currently overseeing OTDA. "By bringing their children to school at the beginning of the school year, fathers and
father figures can demonstrate their commitment to the success of their children in school and in life."

On Saturday September 18th DCS participated in the Latin Day Parade. What a turn out! We had so much fun!

Back to School Picnic
The Welcome Back Picnic continues to be one of our favorite events of the year at DCS. The DCS staff, students, and parents came together once again to make it happen. Many friends, old and new, gathered to make
this event so much fun. Thank you to everyone for coming to help set up, grill, serve, clean up, and enjoy the
delicious food!

Ψ School Psychologist Corner:
Fun and Effective Ways to Read with Children
Experts believe that reading to your child every day is one of the most important things parents can do. If you are more comfortable with Spanish, then please read to your child in Spanish. This will not delay his or her learning of English.
Reading to 0-3 year olds
Reading with preschoolers
Reading with elementary school kids
Make reading a part of
every day
Say how much you enjoy
reading together
Encourage your child to read
another one
Try to read to your child for at
least 15 minutes each day.
Bedtime is an especially good
time to read together. You can
read in Spanish or English.
Tell your child how much you enjoy
reading with him or her. Talk about
"story time" as the favorite part of your
day.
Find ways to encourage your child to
keep reading. If he or she likes one
book, find another book with a similar
subject or by the same author. Ask a
librarian or teacher for book suggestions.
Hold your child while
you read
Sit with your child on your lap
as you read. Let him or her
hold the book and help turn the
pages.
Read with fun in your
voice
Use your face, body, and voice
to make reading fun. Use different voices for different characters.
Know when to stop
If your child loses interest or
has trouble paying attention,
just put the book away for a
while. A few minutes of reading
is ok. Don't continue reading if
your child is not enjoying it.
With practice, your child will be
able to sit and listen for a
longer time.
Talk about the pictures
Point to the pages and talk
about the pictures in the book.
Ask your child to look at the
pictures for clues to what the
story is about.
Show your child the
words
As you read the book, run your
finger along the bottom of the
words. Soon your child will realize it is the words that are
read and not the pictures. If
you're reading a book in Spanish, feel free to let your child
know the English version of a
word. Say something like
"Perro is called dog in English."
Surround your child with
books
Try to have books in your home for your
child to read. Books from a bookstore
can be expensive, but there are places
where you can get inexpensive books,
such as second hand bookstores, garage sales, thrift shops, and library
book sales. And of course, borrowing
books from the library is free!
Let your child choose
Let your child pick out his or her own
books. Letting your child read what interests him or her is one way that reading becomes fun.
Make reading special
Do things that will make books and
reading seem special. Help your child
get his or her own library card, buy
books and books-on-tape as gifts, and
use books as rewards.
Show your child the parts of
a book
Look at the cover of the book. Talk
about what the book might be about.
Look at the page numbers. Tell your
child who the author is and who the
illustrator is.
Show how we read words on
a page
Point out how we read words on a page
from left to right and from top to bottom. Explain that words are separated
by spaces.
Ask your child questions
Discuss what's happening in the story
and point out things on the page. Ask
your child questions such as: "What do
you think will happen next?" or "What is
this?"
Take turns reading
Once your child can read, have him or
her read aloud to you every day. You
can take turns – you read one page and
your child the next.
Make connections to your
child's life
Help your child make connections between what he or she reads in books
and what happens in life. If you're reading a book about a family, for example,
talk about how what happens in the
story is the same or different from what
happens in your family.
Give your child an incentive
to read
At bedtime, encourage your child to
read. Offer a choice between reading or
sleeping. Most kids will choose to read,
as long as you don't offer something
more tempting (like TV).
Try different types of books
and magazines
Encourage your child to read different
types of books, articles, or stories.
Some kids, especially boys, prefer nonfiction books. Others like children's
magazines.
Turn on the closed captioning on your television
When watching a television show with
your child, try turning on the closed
captioning channel. This shows the
words the characters are speaking on
the television screen. Some people find
it's a good way to learn English!

Hello All,
The PTA is off to a great start this year. I would personally like to thank all the parents and teachers that have
already joined the PTA this year. So far we have approximately 40 PTA members signed up. We are well on
our way to our goal of 100 PTA memberships this year (more would be even better). So for all those who haven’t sent their membership forms and dues back to school, I look forward to receiving them very soon.
In next month’s newsletter, I will be sharing the names of all the PTA members as well as the number of PTA
members for each class. As always, the three classes with the highest number of PTA members will receive a

The PTA is looking for volunteers for the following upcoming events Math Night-October 15th at 6:00 pm and
the Harvest Dance-October 27th at 6:00 pm. If you are interested in volunteering at either of these events

Hola a todos,
El PTA (Asociación de Padres y Maestros) ha tenido un gran comienzo este año. Personalmente, me gustaría
dar las gracias a todos los padres y maestros que ya se han unido al PTA este año. Hasta el momento tenemos
aproximadamente 40 miembros suscritos al PTA. Este año nos hemos encaminado a nuestro objetivo de tener
100 membresías (más sería aún mejor). Si todavía no ha devuelto su forma de membresía con la cuota, deseamos recibirlas muy pronto.
En el boletín del mes próximo, compartiré los nombres de todos los miembros del PTA, así como el número de
miembros de PTA en cada clase. ¡Como siempre, las tres clases con el mayor número de miembros de PTA
tendrán una fiesta con PIZZA! Por lo tanto, los padres deben devolver su forma de membresía para ser incluidos. Las clases ganadoras serán anunciadas, el viernes 5 de noviembre.
El PTA está buscando voluntarios para los siguientes eventos: La Noche de las Matemáticas-15 de octubre a
las 6:00 pm y El baile de cosecha-27 de octubre a las 6:00 pm. Si está interesado en donar su tiempo en cualquiera de estos eventos, por favor póngase en contacto con ShaDina Currie al 518.209.0088.

Delaware Community School invites our school community to an NUA Gallery Walk on Tuesday, November 2nd
(9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.). This event coincides with the Parent-Teacher Conference Day in the district of Albany.

Family Math Night is coming to Delaware Community School on Friday, October 15th! The DCS community and
friends are invited to join us for a night full of fun Math activities. We have more than 18 stations combined for students in Pre-K to 5th grade. We hope to see many of our DCS families and friends! Please contact Mrs. Wislous or
Ms. Scharf if you can donate some time to help run the stations (6-7 pm or 7-8 pm).

de octubre! La comunidad y los amigos de Delaware están invitados a unirse a nosotros para una noche llena de
