MEET OUR SEMINARIAN
Justin Paskert
St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary
(Pastoral Year - Corpus Christi - Temple Terrace)
Home Parish: St. Anne, Ruskin
Jus n Paskert was born and raised in Ruskin, Florida. He is
the youngest of four boys. A graduate of East Bay High
School in 1999, Jus n had been working as a plumber in the
family business. He also briefly a ended Hillsborough Community College. At the
age of eighteen Jus n became a Hillsborough County volunteer firefighter and
was later promoted to the rank of driver engineer. Jus n also assisted in the Fire
Explorer program. In his spare me he likes to horseback ride. He is an ac ve
member of St. Anne's Parish. He graduated "magna cum laude" from St. John
Vianney College Seminary in May 2008 and went on to Theology at St. Vincent de
Paul Regional Seminary. This year Jus n is at Corpus Chris in Temple Terrace for
his pastoral year.
Do your family and friends think it is a good idea that you’re becoming a priest?
My family and friends have been very suppor ve. My family has already started
to made plans for a er I become ordained. I also received support from people I
never would have expected.
Do you ever have any fun? What do you do in your free me? The fraternity of
seminarians is like none other. We go to the movies, out to eat, play soccer, football, and my personal favorite ping pong. There are many ac vi es but being
with the guys is what makes it fun.
If you were not a priest, what do you think you would be? I would return to
plumbing and fire figh ng.
How many brothers and sisters do you have? I have three older brothers. The
two oldest are married with six kids between them. My other brother is single
and looking.
What is your favorite TV program? I have to admit that I am addicted to
"Monk" and “Burn No ce.”
Who is your favorite singer or music group? I will listen to almost any type of
music. I like to listen to classical or soundtracks while I am studying, but my favorite is “Phantom of the Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Weber.
Do you ever get bored while studying to be a priest? I’ve never been
bored. There is always something to do. At mes I have become stressed or lonely, but those are some of the challenges that have helped me to grow at the seminary.
How is a seminary different than a regular school? What I have found to be remarkable is the unity with my fellow students. At other schools, I have found that
students have a wide range of mo ves for being there. At the seminary, everyone
is there for the same reason, a love of Christ and a desire to serve Him. This creates an en rely different atmosphere than any other school.
How o en do you see your family? I get to see my family on every break and
summers. I also talk to them on the phone any me.
Page 2
Can you really be happy as a priest since priests don’t make much money? I
have been down the road that money leads and it doesn't lead anywhere and
doesn't make me happy. I have found that the only way to be happy is to fall in
love and stay in love. I believe that this is true for any voca on. I have fallen in
love with Christ and His Church and that love has led me down this road. I am
happy now and believe that will only grow as I grow in my voca on.
Who helped you decide to become a priest? “Nothing is more prac cal than
finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you
are in love with, what seizes your imagina on, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what
breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gra tude. Fall in love,
stay in love and it will decide everything.” This quote of Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J.
expresses what I feel be er than I could. Encountering Christ through my parents, my pastor, friends, and family all helped me to fall in love. The moment
that pushed me over the edge was falling in love with Terri Schiavo.
What do you think the best thing will be about being a priest? I really look
forward to bringing the sacraments to the people and being there for them during their mes of need. I want to live as the spouse of the Church and be a spiritual father. I just want to share in the most in mate parts of people’s lives, in
their rela onship with Christ.

Dear Friends in Christ,
Total offertory (Loose & Envelopes)
Today I am so grateful to God for all of you
who were able to come to the party last
weekend. I wish to men on a special word of
thanks to the commi ee that put together
the recep on following the 10:30am Mass:
Carol Rodriguez, Mary Ann Fontaine, Paul &
Wendy Hetrick, Mary Fisher, Bill & JoAnn Parolini, Alexander & Verdell Jones, and Carmen
Sierra Sanchez. I am now very happy that Father Eugene’s 40th Anniversary Party is scheduled this weekend. I hope that we can fill Cronin Hall with 300 people to celebrate our gentle giant of a priest from the land of Blessed
John Paul II as he prepares to move on to the
challenge of pastoring Resurrec on Catholic
Church in Riverview in July. We welcome today our seminarian for the summer Jus n
Paskert. As I did in 1988 when I was here as a
young seminarian for a 10 week summer assignment, I have asked Jus n to write a reflecon to be placed in the bulle n every week.
I’ll be in Italy and France next week with 20
pilgrims keeping you all in prayer and hoping
for your prayers too for a safe journey and
return in me for that great feast of Pentecost.
Peace in Christ,

Ann Fontaine, Paul y Wendy Hetrick, Mary Fisher, Bill y JoAnn Parolini, Alexander
y Verdell Jones, y Carmen Sánchez Sierra.
