Catholic Campaign for Human Development
In recent years alone, CCHD has committed
over 36% of its total funding to defending human life and dignity by
providing community organizations with the financial resources
they need to address the specific issues of economic development,
education, and housing.
In the city of Lawrence, Kansas,
a local homeless shelter recently closed down, leaving only one
organization to come to the aid of homeless families in the area.
The Lawrence Community Shelter provides safe housing along with
comprehensive support services for homeless and near-homeless
individuals and families. Good Dog! Biscuits & Treats is a small
business that works under the umbrella of the shelter, manufacturing
homemade and healthy dog treats. Through this business, many
residents of the shelter who have suffered from mental illness and
substance abuse problems are provided with opportunities for job
training. They learn how to bake treats and market them throughout
the community. Good Dog! gives them the confidence and skills they
need in order to leave homelessness behind.
In the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury,
Massachusetts, 94% of public school students are recipients of free
lunches. The low-income community’s middle school is struggling
academically and holding classes in a dilapidated building. Greater
Boston Interfaith, a CCHD grant recipient, is helping parents,
teachers, administrators, students, and congregations organize to
turn Dearborn Middle School into the state’s first 6-12 STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math) high school. By getting involved
at the ground level with the support of the superintendent and state
treasurer, Greater Boston Interfaith is able to train church leaders in
the skills necessary to support the STEM school’s work and ensure its
successful implementation in Roxbury.

Sólo en estos últimos años, CCHD ha
destinado más del 36% del total de sus fondos a defender la vida
y la dignidad humana proporcionándoles a las organizaciones
comunitarias el financiamiento necesario para enfrentar aspectos
específicos como el desarrollo de la economía, la educación y
la vivienda.
En la ciudad de Lawrence, Kansas,
hace poco se cerró un refugio para personas sin hogar y sólo ha
quedado una organización que presta ayuda a las familias sin
hogar en esa zona. El Lawrence Community Shelter les proporciona
viviendas seguras y un servicio completo de apoyo a los individuos y
a las familias que no tienen hogar o que están a punto de quedarse
sin hogar. Good Dog! Biscuits & Treats es un negocio pequeño que
funciona bajo el amparo del refugio y que fabrica galletas y gosolinas
saludables para perros. A través de este negocio, muchos residentes
del refugio, quienes han sufrido transtornos mentales y problemas
de drogadicción, tienen la oportunidad para capacitarse en el campo
laboral. Ellos aprenden a hornear las galletas y las golosinas y luego
las venden por toda la comunidad. Good Dog! les da la confianza
y la habilidad necesarias para poder dejar atrás su condicion de
personas sin hogar.
En Roxbury, Massachusetts, un barrio de
Boston, el 94% de los estudiantes de las escuelas públicas reciben
almuerzo gratis. En esta comunidad de bajos ingresos, su escuela
intermedia está pasando dificultades en lo académico y está dictando
las clases en un edificio deteriorado. Greater Boston Interfaith, un
beneficiario de los donativos de CCHD, está ayudando a organizar
a los padres de familia, maestros, administradores, estudiantes y
congregaciones para convertir al Dearborn Middle School en la
primera escuela secundaria 6-12 STEM (que son siglas en inglés
para Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas). Al involucrarse
desde la base, y con el apoyo del superintendente y del tesorero
del estado, Great Boston Interfaith puede capacitar a los líderes de
la iglesia con los conocimientos prácticos necesarios para apoyar
la labor de la escuela STEM y asegurar su exitosa implementación
en Roxbury.
