A
ndrew Saunders doesn’t dance
on the train anymore.
Ever since he was arrested in 2013, the
20-year-old dancer from Baychester says he
stopped performing with his group, We Are
Family for Life (W.A.F.F.L.E) underground.
“I just don’t want to be falsely accused
anymore,” Saunders said. “It’s just unfair to
everyone to be attacked, to be hassled.”

he use of the facilities of the
New York City transit system
for non-transit activities is
regulated by the New York City
Transit Authority Rules of Conduct.
These Rules (their full name is
actually “Rules governing the
conduct and safety of the public
in the use of the facilities of the
New York City Transit Authority
and Manhattan and Bronx Surface
Transit Authority”) form Part 1050
of the New York Code of Rules
and Regulations, or “NYCRR”
for short. They are enacted and
amended by the Board of the New
York City Transit Authority, and
have the force of law.
Entertaining on the Subway
The Rule which regulates the provision of
entertainment on the subway is Section 1050.6
(c). Some features of this Rule are listed below.
This description should NOT be considered a full
explanation of all aspects of this rule, but only a brief
and general summary. All persons who are interested
in performing on the subway and who wish to
avoid violating the law are strongly advised to
contact New York City Transit beforehand to get
a copy of the Rules of Conduct, as well as a more
complete explanation of their requirements.
Some general rules for performing on the
subway include (but are not limited to) the
following:
1. Artistic performances on transit facilities
are permitted, but only if they are in
accordance with the following rules AND
if they do not impede transit activities,
including access to the trains and stations
and the free movement of passengers. All
artistic performances which violate these
rules OR which impede transit activities
are forbidden.
2. You may not perform on board a subway
train or a bus.
3. You may not perform within 25 feet of a
token booth.
4. You may not perform within 50 feet of
the marked entrance of a New York City
Transit office or tower, or in any areas not
open to the public.
5. You may not perform on or near a
platform where construction, renovation,
or maintenance work is actively underway.
6. You may not make excessive noise, or
any noise which interferes with transit
operations. (Note: Consult the text of the
rule for the specific decibel levels defined as
“excessive noise.”).
7. You may not use media devices, such as
films, slides, or videotapes.
8. You may not use an amplification device
of any kind on a platform.

R
aising a child is tough work.
Raising a child as a grandparent presents
a whole new set of challenges, whether it
is navigating the system to access social
services, or figuring out how to successfully
parent a teen in the age of social media.
Across the Bronx, 18,000 children are living
with their grandparents, according to Rimas
Jasin, Executive Director of Presbyterian
Senior Services (PSS), and a total of 48,000
children across New York City.
That’s where Grandparent Family
Apartments comes in. What started as
a support group for grandparents in the
Davidson Senior Center has turned into a
dedicated building just for grandparents who
are primary caregivers. Grandparent Family
Apartments (GFA), at 951 Prospect Avenue,
opened in 2005 and houses 50 families.
Seniors and children alike can access
support services on site, said Program Manager
Kimberley Brace, including advocacy, case
management and most recently, the Young
Adult Success Program, which pairs teenagers
with mentors in different professions as a way
to help transition from high school to college
and the professional world.

of Presbyterian Senior Services
(PSS) celebrated its pilot year.
On Wed., Aug. 15, PSS held a reception at
the apartments to celebrate the Young Adult
Success Program’s pilot year.
“The program has things to just help me be a
better person,” said Tarique Peart. The 24-yearold and his two younger brothers went to live
with their grandmother after losing their mother
to leukemia, and then their father shortly after.
The family moved into GFA in 2007.
“We are a huge family, we do everything
together,” Peart said. “They were there for me
during the worst time in my life.”
Peart is one of the first 12 mentees. But
Peart has had a career path in mind ever since
he was in 10th grade, and learned firsthand
how a social worker can help work through
the tough times. He’s currently enrolled in

Un grupo de adolescentes del Bronx
completaron recientemente un programa de
trabajo de verano como mentores en dos
centros médicos locales, una iniciativa que
tocó el desarrollo profesional, la salud sexual
y las habilidades para la vida.
Durante el programa de seis semanas, 35
estudiantes realizaron trabajos remunerados
en el Hospital St. Barnabas y el Centro
de Salud Comunitaria Union (UCHC por
sus siglas en inglés), realizaron servicio
comunitario, salieron en paseos y participaron
en cursos de educación sexual.
Llevado a cabo el Centro de Salud
Adolescente de UCHC, y dirigido en
colaboración con St Barnabas, el programa
de mentores permite a adolescentes de entre
14 y 18 años de edad seguir a un mentor del
hospital durante doce horas a la semana en
varios departamentos, tales como terapia física
y ocupacional, odontología, clínica de reposo,
lavandería y mercadeo.
“Los adolescentes necesitan entender el
poder que tienen para ser una fuerza positiva
en su comunidad”, dijo Caroline D. Davis,
directora de Servicios para Adolescentes en el

\Sabrina Corrasco, una de las
participantes, dijo que estaba agradecida
por conocer de primera mano el cuidado del
paciente.
Corrasco pasó sus sesiones de trabajo
ayudando en el hogar de ancianos de St.
Barnabas, interactuando con los pacientes

conversaciones uno a uno.
“Esta fue, sin duda, la situación laboral
más seria en la que he estado”, dijo
Corrasco. “Nos enseñaron la importancia

de una subvención del estado de Nueva
York que busca disminuir el embarazo en
adolescentes, la propagación del SIDA
y de otras enfermedades de transmisión
sexual.

El Centro de Salud Adolescente de
UCHC ofrece servicios confidenciales
de salud reproductiva a adolescentes

riesgo y mejorar la autoestima. “Este es un
lugar donde puedes ser tú mismo y no ser
juzgado”, afirmó Davis.
Todos los servicios en el centro se

De septiembre a junio hay pláticas
mensuales llamadas Adolescentes para
Adolescentes y cuentan con oradores
invitados sobre diversos temas.

Professor Judy Niemack, Chillida: Combing
the Wind is a multimedia jazz concert
celebrating the Wind Comb (Peine del
Viento) sculpture by Basque artist Eduardo
Chillida. The concert consists of a cycle of
songs performed by a six-piece instrumental
jazz ensemble and four voices, before a
backdrop of films, dance and photographs.
Renowned New York City jazz musicians
along with students of Musikene, the Higher
School of Music of the Basque Country, and
the Jazz Institut Berlin will perform with
Niemack.
The evening will end with Fiesta Flamenca,
a flamenco performance by the Flamenco
Vivo Carlota Santana Dance Company, which
celebrates its 30th anniversary. The group
believes that the universal spirit of flamenco has
the power to build bridges between cultures and
inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds.
Dancers, singers and guitarists in full flamenco
costume will present a variety of dances full of
pride, passion, honor, love and sorrow.
This event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to
10:00 p.m. The Bronx Museum of the Arts is

quien continúa explorando su
pueblo natal.

various favorite spaces, things
and people in our borough,
we turn to Nilka Martell,
who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
Hunts Point Riverside Park, located
at Lafayette and Egdewater Avenues, is
a small neighborhood park that provides
direct access to the Bronx River.
Many people don’t even know the park
exists.
Some 20 years ago, when I worked at the
Hunts Point Fruit Market, the area was a
dumping ground.
In 2007, the park’s full renovation was
completed. Today it is equipped with spray
showers, an amphitheater, fishing pier and a
canoe/kayak launch.
This past Sat., Aug. 16th, we set out for a
fun-filled day at the park.
It was a full day.
Casita Maria presented the “Coming
of Age Celebration” with artist Dennis

RedMoon Darkeem. The celebration
included creating your own Native
American-inspired medicine bag.
Participants drew their designs on a piece
of leather, and items, including an assortment
of shells, rocks and feathers, were selected
by each person. Next, we were encouraged
to find something within the park, like a
rock, twig or a leaf. All these pieces were
placed inside our bags, which were secured
with leather straps.
The final step was a “smudging.” As
Darkeem explained, “Smudging is the
process of cleansing negative energy from
things and our bodies.” Sage is used in this
ceremonial practice to pay respect to our
ancestors and to the animals whose hides
were used.
The day’s activities didn’t end there.
Rocking the Boat was offering free
community rowing, and we took full
advantage.
Though my kids and I have canoed the
Bronx River dozens of times, this was our
first time on the river in a boat. And these
were no ordinary boats. The fleet used
by Rocking the Boat was built by teenage
students involved in their boat-building
program.
I had the pleasure of being escorted
by staff member Danny. He was eager to
share details on the amazing restoration
work done in the River and what he’s
learned in the program. He spoke about
his own transformation since joining the
organization, and his love for the waterways.
Lastly, Acuator Inc., a design and
production company, held its Second
Annual Barbeque. Its CEO and founder,
Pope Jackson, a Harlem native and a
Bronx resident, held the company’s first
BBQ at Hunts Point Riverside Park last
year. He loved that the park was local, yet
undiscovered. He and his guests were so
impressed with the venue that he chose to
return to it again this year.
The barbeque was quite a success. It
was great fun to observe the excitement
of a child flying a kite for the first time,
as was watching both children and adults
participating in a potato sack race.
Our parks offer more than just a place of
respite, they are used as gathering spaces for
the community. Before the summer ends,
whether it is Hunts Point Riverside Park or
another hidden gem, make sure to visit a
park you’ve never visited before.

El pasado sábado 16 de agosto, nos
preparamos para un día lleno de diversión en el
parque.
Fue un día completo.
Casita María presentó la celebración
“Coming of Age” con el artista Dennis RedMoon
Darkeem. La celebración incluyó crear nuestra
propia bolsa de medicinas inspirada en los
nativos americanos. Los participantes dibujaron
sus diseños en un pedazo de piel e incluyeron
una variedad de conchas, piedras y plumas,
seleccionadas por cada persona. A continuación,
nos animaron a encontrar algo dentro del
parque, como una piedra, rama o una hoja.
Todas estas piezas fueron colocadas dentro de
nuestras bolsas, que fueron aseguradas con
correas de cuero.
El paso final fue “mancharla”. Como explicó

Aunque mis hijos y yo hemos remado en
canoa decenas de veces el Río Bronx, esta
fue nuestra primera vez en un barco. Y no se
trataban de barcos ordinarios. La flota utilizada
por Rocking the Boat fue construida por
estudiantes adolescentes que participan en su
programa de construcción de barcos.
Tuve el placer de ser escoltada por Danny,
miembro del personal. Estaba ansioso por

ha aprendido en el programa. Habló de su

and families sought to learn more about the
advantages of breastfeeding and the resources
and community support available. Exercise
and food demonstrations were on display,
and a tent in the center of the event, called
the “Lactation Lounge,” was an encouraging
space for women to breastfeed their babies.
Nico Moseley, a mother of three, explained
she breastfed her youngest, Shannon, who is
now 11 months old.
Moseley said she “automatically assumed” she
would bottle feed Shannon because that’s what
she did in the past. By the time she got formula
from her WIC appointment after the baby was
born, “he didn’t want it,” Moseley said.

“The idea that breasts are sex items, it’s
challenging for the moms to get beyond that,”
said Gilbert. “[But] if they see other women
doing it, it normalizes it.”
She noted that WIC promotes breastfeeding
in its office waiting rooms.

make that parent feel comfortable,” said Fritz
Tavarez, Community Outreach Specialist at
HealthFirst.
Tavarez said he was “totally supportive”
of his wife breastfeeding their two children,
and he finds New York an “open and friendly”
state.
“My wife didn’t have any issues anywhere we
went, socially. You might get a look or something,
I don’t think you’ll get anything more than that,”
Tavarez said, adding some cultures are more
supportive of breastfeeding than others.
When asked how best to support
breastfeeding mothers, Tavarez said it’s all
about comfort and timing. Just helping elevate
the feet can help, Tavarez said, and providing
a glass of water, comfortable chair and quiet
space.
“Men need to be attentive to their wives that
breastfeed their children.”

For nearly 20 years, Bronx native Harris
has strived to do that by creating a series
of award-winning documentaries that
examine issues surrounding self-identity
and race.
His latest film, Through A Lens Darkly,
attempts to analyze the factors that have
distorted the image that blacks have of
themselves.
One of Harris’ most prominent childhood
memories was of his father furiously wiping
Vaseline off his child’s face, as he said, “Do
you want people out there to think you’re a
greasy monkey?”
Harris said that incident put him on
“constant alert” that he must somehow
prove his humanity and worth to others,
especially strangers who might look at him
and see something different.
And that memory sets the tone for
Through A Lens Darkly.

Better with
a Buddy

recent New York Times article
addressed the pros and cons of
running with other people versus
running solo. The conclusion?
Running with another person or
two has many advantages for
motivation and maintenance. I
couldn’t agree more. While I don’t
run, I rarely exercise on my own.
With the exception of biking or
swimming, or taking a walk to
“clear my mind,” exercise is not
just better with a buddy for me, it
makes exercise possible.
I know that many people prefer to
exercise solo. Sometimes it’s just easier or
more relaxing to go it alone. But consider a
workout partner. Having one or more people
to hold you accountable means you’re less
likely to skip a workout—and so are they.
You not only are counting on each other to
show up and make the effort, but you can
be each other’s cheerleaders. Plus, when
you use bodyweight exercises, you can get
creative and bounce ideas off each other for
combinations of moves. And, there’s nothing
wrong with a little competition when it’s done
in the spirit of fun.

have a fitness buddy:

is one that gets it right. You can look at the
photos and videos together to get the gist, and
then one can read the instructions as the other
does the exercise, and vice versa.
It’s safer. The company of others affords
protection, especially if you are in an isolated
outdoors area; if you’re there at a time of day
when it is sparsely populated; or it’s a new
area that you don’t know well. Moreover, if
you sprain something or need assistance, you
won’t be alone.
Exercising together is a great way to
hang out and socialize. Why do we always
invite each other for “coffee?” How about
inviting each other for a Flamingo stretch,
some push-ups, or sprints?
Grow together. You’re likely to feel braver
and less self-conscious when you have other
people around you doing the same thing.
There’s an old saying to the effect that “When
one person does something new, they’re
crazy; when two people do it, it’s normal; and
when three or more do it, it’s a movement.”
Use your imagination. You can adapt
many standard exercises to accommodate
another person. And feel free to get a little
competitive. I guarantee it will make you
stronger as it makes you smile.

I
n the 1970’s, zombies and
vampires sucked the lifeblood
out of the Bronx. Marley Davidson,
the Bronx Exorcist, cruised the
burned out streets in a large white
limousine, looking for vengeance.
Marley Davidson, Bronx Exorcist is the
creation of Sandy Jiménez, an Inwood-based
graphic artist, writer and director. On August
29, Jiménez will talk about Marley’s complex
world at Word Up Community Bookshop at
6 p.m.
Davidson started off as a character in
Vladek, Vampire Detective, another series by
Jiménez. But the character took on a life of his
own and demanded his own series.
The character has traditional superhero
origins. His parents were killed by villains.
But he’s not a hero. “He’s the kind of person who doesn’t listen
to music,” Jiménez said of his creation. “He’s
a zealot.”
Jiménez, of Dominican heritage, grew up
in a kind of parallel universe to Davidson. As
a child he lived on E. 172nd Street and Vyse
Avenue in the Bronx. His former building
still stands, but dozens of others in that
neighborhood succumbed to the fires that
ravaged the borough in the 1970’s. Eventually
he and his mother moved to a safer area, a
housing project one block north of where the
burning stopped. At the time, there were empty, burned out
buildings everywhere and the sidewalks were

covered with glass. With hardly any cars or
buses in sight, the neighborhood was eerily
quiet. When he walked to school he could hear
the signals switch as traffic lights changed.
Now Jiménez lovingly renders that time
and place in graphic art and animated films. He was inspired early on by comic books.
At four, his mother gave him a Spanish
language version of Popeye. It wasn’t long
before he clipped the pages apart and rearranged the cartoon frames in different
sequences. He loved how easy it was to play
with time and space. Later, he read the Marvel comics his
mother bought at Sears from cover to cover.

I
t was about a year ago that
Flora Montes decided it was
time to go “another level.”
Montes, chef, spoken word artist
entrepreneur, and mother, will soon be rolling
up her sleeves as Executive Director of Bronx
Fashion Week. The inspiration came to her
after attending and observing other Fashion
Week events.
In conceiving of the event, she wanted
to highlight the abundant sartorial and style
talents she knew existed in her native borough.
“It was a mission of love,” she said.
And one of friendship.
Montes soon turned to friends, colleagues
and complete strangers who she knew shared
her love for both fashion – and for the
borough.
Among those who lent a hand are members
of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce; the
Andrew Freedman Home; Bartow-Pell
Mansion Museum; Eva JaySweets; Fashion
Avenue News; the Fordham Business
Improvement District (BID); The Bronx
LGBTQS Chamber of Commerce; the
Jerome-Gun Hill Merchants BID; the New
York Botanical Garden; Port-Morris Distillery;
Project Planes; Stylaga; and The Bronx
Museum of the Arts, among others.
“It’s amazing to see all [this] showcased,”
explained Montes.
Montes and her many collaborators joined
together at a formal press conference this past
Tues., Aug. 12th at the Freedman Home to
announce details on the Bronx Fashion Week.
The three-day event will kick off on
September 5th at the Freedman Home and will
highlight collections from 17 designers.
Each day will offer a different thematic
focus. The first day will show avant-garde
fashion; casual wear will be showcased on
the second day; and couture will be shown
on the third day.
And it will not just be about the clothes.
The designers will work in collaboration
with 80 visual artists and 39 photographers
from The Bronx Documentary Project,

madre, pronto estará arremangándose
como directora ejecutiva de la semana
de la moda del Bronx. La inspiración
le llegó después de asistir y observar
otros eventos de la semana de la
moda. En la concepción del evento,
quiso destacar los abundantes talentos
de sastrería y estilo que sabía que
existían en su condado natal. “Fue
una misión de amor”, dijo. Y una de
amistad. Montes pronto volteó a sus
amigos, colegas y extraños que sabía
que compartían tanto su amor por la
moda como por el condado.
Los organizadores ofrecieron una conferencia de prensa.
Entre aquellos que le dieron una mano se
encuentran los miembros de la Cámara de
Comercio del Bronx; la Casa Andrew Freedman;
el Museo Mansión Bartow-Pell; Eva JaySweets;

on the art form, but Jiménez’s love never
faltered. In addition to four editions of Marley
Davidson (the fifth is due out December
2014), he’s completed several short animated
films and also contributed to the popular
World War 3 Illustrated series. Unlike mainstream comics, his characters
live in a complex moral universe. There is no
mere good versus evil. His protagonists are
not heroes and the villains are not predictably
execrable. “There’s no such thing as a good war,”
Jiménez said. “But Marley is convinced that
he’s fighting one.”
It is a deliberate strike against a pervasive
reductionism that Jiménez finds particularly
frustrating. While others in the comic book
industry have suggested his villains should
be flatter, Jiménez says that kind of twodimensional thinking is bad for comics as
well as society. It’s equivalent to labeling someone a
Communist or terrorist. “Not that there aren’t
bad people,” he added. “When you can say
what somebody is it determines what you can
do to them.” “It’s destructive thinking long-term because
it doesn’t allow us to see people beyond a
certain point,” he added.
Jiménez believes the real power of horror
and sci-fi isn’t in gratuitous violence or gore.
Instead it’s the larger questions that arise
when dealing with war and unrest. The great works, like Dracula, a rich
count that lives on a hill, impaling people
when they don’t pay their taxes on time, are
metaphors for the times in which they were
created. Yet these themes have been distilled

Twilight. “We can leverage sci-fi and horror into
something more than a chess game – into
social commentary,” he said. The show at Word Up is a first for Jiménez,
a long time volunteer at the bookshop. He
wants
people—especially
children—to
discover they could love comics for reasons
they aren’t even aware of yet. “Comics were my gateway drug to
other kinds of fiction,” he said. He loved it
when Stan Lee’s characters would quote
Shakespeare or lines from classics. That led
him to read those works as well. “I think that every one should do that – be
an ambassador for the kind of fiction that they
believe is important,” he said.

“We all know how hard it is to get a job, to
get ahead, to succeed in school or succeed in
life these days, it’s very competitive,” Jasin
said. “You have to know the right people. And
not everyone has access to that, and that’s
why we created the Young Adult Success
Program.”
Brad Wolfer, Senior Vice President of
Company Stores at Donna Karan, said over
the course of being married for 30 years
and raising three children in three different
cities, he found out he “liked helping
everybody.”
Wolfer, who chairs the Young Adult
Success Program Steering Committee, said
in the first year of the program, mentees have
been able to go on to field trips into colleges
and workplaces, and participated in a five
week course that certified them in specific
fields such as work readiness, customer
service and green construction. After the five
weeks they were given a laptop and a
stipend, Wolfer said.
“To capture the attention and do all this, I
think, it’s amazing, if you think about what
can happen when people come together,”
Wolfer added. “I’ve seen some of these
young adults grow from shy, bashful
and not having a resume to now
being on LinkedIn with a two page
resumes that are just stellar.”

mentee, said the program has
taught him the importance
of networking and having
a mentor, and that he’s
learned
some
80
percent of jobs are
not advertised to
the public.
“Our goal is to boost their drive,” said
Katherine Martínez, Deputy Director
of Presbyterian Senior Services.
“Think about what can happen when people
come together,” said Brad Wolfer, Senior Vice

“We want to build their self-esteem, we
want to encourage them to feel that they
have the potential, they have that
ability, they just need someone
to help give them that push,”

Project: Back to School
The Coalition for the Homeless in conjunction with Congressmember Eliot Engel have
launched this year’s “Project: Back to School”, a drive which looks to collect school supplies
for the more than 21,000 school age children living in the city’s homeless shelters.
“This is a wonderful cause that I am always proud to be a part of,” said Congressman Engel.
“Year after year I ask my constituents to donate everything from backpacks to number 2
pencils, and year after year I am blown away by the response.”
“I am confident this year’s drive will be our biggest one yet,” he added.
Donations will be accepted through Fri., Sep. 12th, at Congressman Engel’s Riverdale office,

“It has produced art and fashion that inspired
the entire world, but has gone unrecognized.”
“It’s going to be an art explosion,” he
added. “The event will support local artists,
not only in the development of their skills, but
also in teaching those skills to the rest of the
community.”
Montes said she was excited too to bring
local designers back home, as many are forced
to work and show their creations elsewhere
due to a lack of adequate space and financial
considerations.
“It’s a competitive business,” said Montes.
“With Bronx Fashion Week, there’ll be able
to come back.”
“It will be a combination of fashion, art
and music,” added Advisory Board member
Daniel Silvagnoli.
Self-taught designer Miroslava Rosado is
looking forward to showcase her sexy and
colorful brand of clothing, Aval. She learned
how to sew from her mother and how to make
patterns from her father.
A year and a half ago she volunteered to
make uniforms for her co-workers, so as to
save them some money.
“They weren’t too good,” she laughed.
“But they loved me so much that they wore
them anyway.”
She has since perfected her technique, and
promised an inclusive presentation for Bronx
Fashion Week.
“I’ll have petite, tall, voluptuous [clothes
and models],” she said. “All women are
beautiful.”

Christian said there have been over 350
cases of subway dancers charged with
reckless endangerment this year – a Class A
misdemeanor – and that he knows of about
15 performers who are actively suing the
NYPD for wrongful arrest. He estimates
settlements could cost the city more than
$100,000.
“The reason we are out here today is we’d
like the NYPD and the MTA to respect the
rules as they are published and as they
appear on New York State law regarding
performance,” Christian said.
Christian said the MTA’s rules regarding
subway performance are “not well
publicized,” and that he doesn’t know of any
police training that is in place for officers
regarding subway performers.
“Anyone who plays the violin, anyone who
sings, anyone who reads poetry, anyone who
uses puppets on the subway platform or the
subway mezzanine level is allowed to for that.
There is no permit in New York City, there is
no approval process,” Christian said, adding
“many” police officers believe performing is
a violation.
Christian said that while performing on a
moving train is not permitted, the rules outline
a $100 civil penalty maximum.
“The reason we started dancing on the
train, we only wanted to make $10 to go to
battle events,” Saunders, the former subway
performer, said. “And that was to keep us off
the streets, and a lot of people don’t know the
real story behind it.”
“There is no approval
process,” said violinist and
advocate Matthew Christian.
“I don’t perform on the train anymore,
because I don’t want to be arrested and locked
up for like a year,” Saunders added.
Saunders said he has “nothing against”
the NYPD. He said he had recently
performed at a 911 dispatchers’ family
event. Other opportunities have come from
train performances, Saunders said, such
as commercial work and appearances on
television talent shows.
“We have a lot of gigs, and I don’t have to
depend on my parents (for money),” Saunders
said.
Zenon Laguerre, a 34-year-old construction

though another Harris project, the Digital
Diaspora Family Reunion Roadshow — a
multimedia, community engagement effort
designed to catalog family photographs.
The film makes extensive use of these
family photos to illustrate how they shape
the self-images of blacks in America.
“The concept of the family album is
universal,” explained Harris, who feels
that family pictures serve to humanize their
subjects.
“When someone is viewing that type of
photo, they see the person in the picture and
think, ‘That is somebody’s child’ or ‘That is
somebody’s uncle.’”
As he’s done for previous documentaries,
Harris incorporates his own family photo
archives into the narrative for Through A
Lens Darkly, indicative of a fondness for
personal images that began at a young age
while growing up in the Bronx’s Wakefield
section.
At the age of six, Harris was given his first
camera by his grandfather, who inspired the
child’s love of photography.
“I was like a little amateur photographer
in the Bronx, even in elementary school,”
recalled Harris.
Like his grandfather once did, Harris carries
at least one camera with him at all times.
He said that working on Through A Lens
Darkly took him on a personal journey to

understand why it was important for black
photographers, both professional and amateur,
to take pictures.
“I learned that it was a form of activism
and a strategy for survival in America,” he
commented.
It’s often difficult for blacks to assess their
self-identity, because they don’t possess
knowledge of black history, said Harris.
“It’s not taught in schools,” he remarked.
But it’s the director’s hope that young
African Americans can benefit from the
lessons explored in Through A Lens Darkly.
“I made this film for future generations,”
said Harris.
“They need to see the importance of
not only removing negative images, but
promoting self-affirming ones.”

words but not unless

tries to say big words

maybe it’s my fault
because I’m not a big
talker either. I’m a
single mom and work
full-time. When I’m
home, I just want to
feed her, bathe her,
cuddle her and get
her to bed. Her doctor
says she’s ﬁne, but I
want to be sure. Could
something be wrong
with her development?

Dear Kettie,
Babies
and
children
develop
at
astounding
rates, revealing new pieces
of their intelligence every
day. Some of these pieces
come in the form of words.
Other pieces come in the
form of perception, or how
well a child picks up on
the feelings and behaviors
of people around her. As
you explained, you’re not
very chatty. Your little girl is
probably just taking after her
favorite person: you.
From
what
you’ve
explained, your daughter’s
language skills seem about
right for a child of 18 months.
It’s a positive sign that she’s
using words and seems
to understand that they’re
the key to getting what she
wants. By 24-30 months, she
should start to string twoword phrases together such
as “milk mess” or “baby
sleep”. Her vocabulary will
increase over the coming
months, but you’ll have to
help her.
When
it
comes
to
development,
the
most
important thing is that the
child feels loved and secure,
which is clearly the case with
your daughter. Conversation
and regular reading will help
her grow more comfortable
with language.
Talk her
through her bedtime routine,
naming all the objects you
encounter:
spoon, fork,
rubber ducky, etc. Then,
right before bed, read to
her for ﬁve minutes. If you’re
too tired, read to her in the
morning before you take her
to daycare. If you can’t stand
the baby books, read her
an article from a magazine
you like or a couple pages
from your favorite book. It
all counts. Also, how about
playing some nice music at
night? The lyrics in the music
