SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 5, 2013
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”
PASTOR REFLECTION
I
n last week’s Gospel, Jesus gave us a “new”
commandment: “Love one another, as I have
loved you.” This love is not a simple sentimental emotion. Rather, it is meant to change our lives dramatically – it is a command to see things in very different
ways. For example, the poor are to be welcomed as
brothers and sisters; the sick are not cursed by God;
the powerful and influential are called upon to serve
and protect the powerless and vulnerable without
counting the cost. Jesus’ command to love turns
everything upside down.
Almost as if Jesus realized that this upheaval would
bring anxiety and fear to those who take this command
seriously, He reminds us that the Holy Spirit will be given to us to comfort and strengthen us as we work out
the meaning of what it is to be Christian. This takes
great faith and courage. Why, because many times we
can’t see where the Lord is leading us.
The love Jesus calls us to consider is more than a
human feeling. It demands of us a new way of seeing,
much like the way the Apostles were challenged to
“see” the Risen Jesus – to recognize Him in a new
way; to listen to Him with new ears – the ears, the
eyes, the heart of faith. It took great courage for them,
too. They made mistakes, like us, but they remained
faithful to Him even under incredible stress and danger.
If we think that the Christian way of life is like walking a tight-rope to avoid falling into sin, we’ve missed
the point. Christian life is not trying to figure what
is the minimum required to sneak into heaven. No,
the Christian life is embracing the love of Christ with
every ounce of our will and surrendering everything
over to the Lord, allowing Him to lead us and guide us
wherever He wants. It takes courage and faith to
leave everything in the hands of the Lord. That’s
why Our Lord can say to us in today’s Gospel: “Do not
let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” In the midst of
our confusion and our fears, may we never lose courage and remain faithful to the Lord.
Today’s second
collection will benefit
the Improvement Fund.

… The 2013 Vacation Bible
School!!
This year’s Vacation Bible School, “Cool Kingdom
Party, Mary Leads Me Closer to Jesus,” is scheduled
for the week of July 22-26. Sessions begin each day at
8:30 a.m. and conclude at 12:00 noon and is open to
children ages 3 years through 6th grade. Teens in
grades 7 –12 are welcome to participate as teen helpers.
This year’s VBS will help the children discover who
Mary is and how she leads us closer to her son Jesus,
as well as the importance of making Jesus KING of our
own lives. They’ll love the great songs and crafts and
we’re very enthusiastic about the wonderful faith lessons. Special snacks and mementos will be given out
each day to the children along with “take-home” sheets
that can be shared with the family.
Each day will focus on a different theme: Obedience - Mary said “Yes!” to God; Purity - Mary remained
pure her whole life, she never sinned; Mary is the
Queen of heaven and Earth - she brings our prayers
to Jesus, our true King; Jesus is the King and Lord of
our Lives; Build the Kingdom of God on Earth - with
the love and joy of Jesus in our hearts, we can each
make this a better place for us to live in.
The cost for participants is $25.00 / child or
$45.00 / family. (Teen and adult helpers are asked to
pay for their T-shirt, the cost will again be $8.00.) We
can still use lots of help, especially teachers and teacher’s aides. Registration forms are in the vestibule of the
church and at the church office. Please note that the
deadline for registration is Monday, June 10th. We look
forward to an exciting week of getting to know our
Blessed Mother in a loving and more spiritual way.

SEXTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA
5 DE MAYO 2013
“El Espíritu Santo nos enseñará todo”
-Juan 14:23-29
yo les he amado”.
No,
preocupaciones, y no tengan miedo”.
