Underlying this vertigo is an unholy mixture of desire and pleasure: “Pois foi com dona Cândida Raposo que o desejo de prazer não passava” (“So it was with Cândida Raposo that the desire for pleasure never went away”). To cure her malady, Cândida Raposo, wilted with age, visits a gynecologist. However, the doctor only has bad news: “Minha senhora, lamento lhe dizer que não passa nunca” (“My lady, I’m sorry to tell you that it will never go away”). After the patient complains that she is eighty-one years old, the gynecologist replies that the diagnosis is terminal: “É até morrer” (“It lasts until you die”). Cândida Raposo laments: “Mais isso é o inferno!” (“But this is hell!”). The doctor corrects her: “É a vida, senhora Raposo” (“It’s life, Mrs. Raposo”). The next line of the story contains a banal revelation, masked in the form of twin questions: “A vida era isso, então? Essa falta de vergonha?” (“This was life, then? This lack of shame?”). That night Cândida Raposo goes home and masturbates, leaving “mudos fogos de artifícios” (“mute fireworks”) in her wake. These mute fireworks accompany feelings of shame, sadness, and the terrible revelation that the desire for pleasure will hound her until death. In the seventh issue of Párrafo we explore the impulses that terrify Lispector’s elderly protagonist. The Horny Issue embraces the sensations of pleasure, sex, kink, longing, and beauty. We found inspiration for this magazine in the bravado of Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights, the muscular eroticism of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs, the torturous nature of desire in Clarice Lispector’s short stories and novels, and the unabashed kinkiness of Peter Strickland’s film The Duke of Burgundy. Like these characters and works of art, the images, poems, and stories in this issue are perverted and impudent. We make no apologies for our twisted libidos and love of leather. What follows is unquestionably horny. Aprendi a beijar, a foder e a gemer vendo filme. Filmes me ensinaram muita coisa. Aprendi a fumar vendo filme. Filme e novela. Daí eu aprendi a mentir, a cuspir e a matar vendo filme. Aquello iba in crescendo. No me distraje. ¿Qué te inspiró a empezar tu propia productora? Efforts: Sex Film Industry” del New York Times. Tienes voz, y tu versión acústica de “How Deep Is Your Love” de los Bee Gees mola. Me gusta crear y cantar. Lima: Instituto Nacional de Cultura, 1980. 76-77. 50 LETTER TO ANTONIO III César Moro English Translation by I love you with your great cruelty, because you appear in the middle of my dream and you wake me up and like a god, like an authentic god, like the only and true, with the injustice of the gods, all black nocturnal god, all of obsidian with your head of diamond, like a wild colt, with your wild hands and your feet of gold that support your black body, you drag me and throw me into the sea of tortures and suppositions. Rafa Ramírez Keep me next to you, near your navel where the air begins; near your armpits where the air runs out. Near your feet and near your hands. Keep me next to you. I will be your shade and the water for your thirst, with eyes; in your dream I will be that luminous point that grows larger and turns everything into light; in your bed as you sleep you will hear something like a murmur and a warmth will wind around your feet and rising will slowly take over your limbs and a great relief will take hold of your body and when you extend your hand you will feel a strange body, icy: it will be me. You carry me in your blood and in your breath, nothing will be able to erase me. Your strength is useless to scare me away, your anger is less strong than my love; you and I already united forever, in spite of you, we go together. In the pleasure that you take far from me there is a sob and your name. Before your eyes the inextinguishable fire. Nothing exists outside of you, only silence and space. But you are the space and the night, the air and the water that I drink, the silent poison and the volcano into whose abyss I fell long ago, centuries ago, since before I was born, so that you might drag me by the hair to my death. Vainly I struggle, vainly I ask. The gods are mute; like a wall that moves away, that is how you respond to my questions, to the burning thirst of my life. Why resist your power? Why fight your strength of lightning, against your torrential arms; if it has to be like this, if you are the point, the pole that magnetizes my life. June 18, 1939 Your story is the story of man. The great drama in which my existence is the burning bush, the object of your cosmic vengeance, of your rancor of steel. All sex and all fire, so you are. All ice and all shade, so you are. Beautiful demon of the night, implacable tiger of starry testicles, grand black tiger of endless semen clouds flooding the world. *In: César Moro. Obra Poética 1.
